Jerusalem: Armenian Christians fight controversial land deal | BBC News

  • The Armenians of Jerusalem have only just held their annual Christmas celebration on 19 January.
But this year, it's been overshadowed by the war in Gaza and a new threat to the survival of the community from a contested real estate deal. This deal could see them lose 25% of their land in their ancient quarter of the Old City.
Armenians date their presence in the holy city back to the 4th Century. Many of the 2,000-strong community live inside the large, cobble-stoned compound of St James Convent.

Why all this happening now, after centuries of Armenian presence in Jerosalem? Its not surprising, since this could have been fueled by Azerbaijan's close ties with Israel at a time when Azerbaijan is threatening Armenia on an everyday basis. Aliev's government or social media trolls spread armenophobia globally. Citizens of Azerbaijan's ally states are most veberable to this.

The oldest known Christian community in the world is the Assyrian Church of the East, which was established in the 1st century AD in Mesopotamia (present-day Iraq). They are also known as Chaldeans or Syriacs, and their tradition is one of the three main branches of Eastern Christianity. Despite facing persecution and displacement throughout their history, they have managed to preserve their unique culture and traditions, and continue to practice their faith to this day. It's worth noting that there are other ancient Christian communities around the world, such as the Orthodox Church of Ethiopia, which claims to have been established by Saint Athanasius in the 4th century AD, and the Malankara Church in India, which traces its roots back to the apostle Thomas. However, the Assyrian Church of the East is generally considered to be the oldest continuous Christian community in the world.

But historically more important because Armenia, a country and 4th oldest country, officially accepted it as official religion of the country. However, that does not mean that Armenians were not Christians before that. A country cannot be declared officially a Christian country if the majority/at least half of the population were not Christians.

Alot of history between the two. The bible was translated in Armenian - and in the newly introducted Armenian alphabet - in the early fifth century CE, first from Syriac and later also from Greek: the Septuagint and the early polyglot Hexapla. And Jewish settlers were overrun in Armenia around that time and were kicked out for their ways of living. I think that's when the ones referred to jewish in these days were introduced to those scriptures as they were following Talmud at that time. It appears that was the turning point for the now called nation of Israel to take on that role. Before that the Armenians would mine Lapis Armenus for the babylonians who uses the stones to adorn their walls and gates of babylon, that's included The Ishtar Gate was the eighth gate to the inner city of Babylon It was constructed c. 569 BC by order of King Nebuchadnezzar II. It's very important people are aware of this history.

Assyria was mostly in Iraq and part of Syria. Also, there were other minorities, besides Jews, who lived in Armenian Highlands which belonged to Armenians. Minorities lived many years in different countries, does that mean we have to change the names of countries and call those countries with the name of minorities. Armenians, 4,000 years or more history, have have been neighbours of Iran. Iran has more than 5,000 years of history. It is shameful how some people try to change or wipe out the history of the 4th oldest country in the world, Armenia, Iran is the oldest, 2nd is Egypt, 3rd is Vietnam.

You're right, Tamara! The acceptance of Christianity as the official religion of Armenia in 301 AD was indeed a significant event in the history of Christianity. It marked the beginning of a new era for the Armenian people and solidified their commitment to the Christian faith. As you mentioned, it's unlikely that Armenia would have been able to declare itself a Christian country without a significant portion of the population already being Christian. So while the exact date of the conversion of the Armenian people may not be certain, it's clear that Christianity had a strong presence in the region long before the official declaration in 301 AD. Thanks for adding your insights to the conversation!

    • @Progressive_Canadian
      @Progressive_Canadian 7 месяцев назад +3

Thank you for sharing this interesting information, Tom! It's fascinating to learn about the connections between the Armenian people and the Jewish faith, as well as the impact of the Bible's translation into Armenian. It's also intriguing to note the connection between the mining of Lapis Armenus and the construction of the Ishtar Gate in Babylon. This highlights the complex web of trade and cultural exchange that existed in the ancient Near East. It's also worth mentioning that the Armenian alphabet, which was introduced in the 5th century CE, played a significant role in the spread of Christianity among the Armenian people. The Bible's translation into Armenian made the scriptures accessible to a wider audience, and helped to establish Christianity as the dominant religion in Armenia. Overall, it's clear that the history of the Armenian people and their interactions with neighboring cultures is rich and complex, and there is much to be learned from studying this period. By understanding these historical events, we can gain a deeper appreciation for the diverse cultural heritage of the region and the ways in which different civilizations have influenced each other over time.

The land in question is literally a parking lot and sold by the Arminian church to a development company to build a hotel. The armenians when they found out what their church leadership did do not like the deal saying the contract is invalid because of a 3rd signature of the church leadership was defrocked and shouldnt have signed the contract. Its a Court contract issue, period and a judge will decide the validity of the contract. Whether the Armenian church sold the land legally to the developer will be addressed in court.

More BBC “selected” coverage. Did they meet with the Armenian Church officials that sold the land? Did they meet with the buyer? This completely superficial piece is shoehorned into the typical BBC narrative of settlers, who want to take over the area They clearly mentioned that there was a developer who wanted to build on the area. It is entirely likely that the Arminian Church was running out of funds to operate and needed to sell some of their vast property holdings in the area. (They practically own 1/4 of the old city but have few adherents.) It could all be that simple. This is clearly a dispute within the church and their members.

But any other event, I would have a lot of questions. How did the leader become the authority? Was that completely legal? Is there any committee that would have a say? And lastly, have the Armenian's resorted to violence? That never helps.

    "Beware of false prophets,"

    • @2gointruth
      @2gointruth 7 месяцев назад

Beware of all religions. “Beware of false prophets, men who come to you dressed up as sheep while underneath they are savage wolves. You will recognize them by the fruits they bear.” - (The Prophet and Messiah Jesus of Nazareth at Matthew 7: 15-16) - So never worship and pray in the way of the many false prophets who lead all religions.
“But when you pray, go into a room by yourself, and shut the door. Pray to your Father who is there in the secret place; and your Father who sees what is secret will reward you.
In your prayers do not go babbling on like the heathen, who imagine that the more they say the more likely they are to be heard.
Do not imitate them. Your Father knows what your needs are before you ask him.
This is how you should pray:
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
Your kingdom come; your will be done, on earth as in heaven,
Give us today our daily bread,
Forgive us the wrong we have done, as we have forgiven those who have wronged us.
And do not bring us to the test, but save us from the evil one.
For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory, for ever.
      Amen.
For if you forgive others the wrongs they have done, your heavenly Father will also forgive you; but if you do not forgive others, then the wrongs you have done will not be forgiven by your Father.” - (Jesus the Messiah at Matthew 6: 6-15) -
“Pass no judgement, and you will not be judged. For as you judge others, so you will yourselves be judged, and whatever measure you deal out to others will be dealt back to you.” - (at Matthew 7: 1-2) -
“Truly I tell you, if anyone obeys my teaching he shall never know what it is to die.” - (at John 8: 51) -
“Always treat others as you would like them to treat you: that is the Law and the Prophets.
Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life and only a few find it.” - (Matthew 7: 12-14) -
“I am the gate; anyone who comes into the fold through me shall be safe. He shall go in and out and shall find pasturage.
The thief comes only to steal, to kill, to destroy; I have come that men may have life, and may have it in all its fullness.” - (John 10: 9-10) -
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” - (Matthew 7: 21) -
“I am the resurrection and I am life. If a man has faith in me, even though he dies, he shall come to life; and anyone who is alive and has faith shall never die.” - (John 11: 25-26) -
“I have not come to judge the world, but to save the world” - (John 12: 47) -
“Whoever then will acknowledge me before men, I will acknowledge him before my Father in heaven; and whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven.” - (Matthew 10: 32-34) -
“I am the way; I am the truth and I am life; no one comes to the Father except by me. If you knew me you would know my Father too.” - (John 14: 6-7) -
“An expert in the law, [a leading religious Pharisee] tested him with this question: ‘Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?’ He answered, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind. That is the greatest commandment. It comes first. The second is like it: Love your neighbour as yourself. Everything in the Law and the Prophets hangs on these two commandments.’” - (Matthew 22: 35-40) -
“There is no greater love than this, that a man should lay down his life for his friends.” - (John 15: 13) -
“Do not call any man on earth ‘father’ ; for you have one Father and he is in heaven. Nor must you be called ‘teacher’ ; you have one Teacher, the Messiah.’” - (Matthew 23: 9-10) -
“Take care that no one misleads you: For many will come claiming my name…” - (Matthew 24: 4) -
“Many false prophets will arise, and will mislead many; and as lawlessness spreads, men’s love for one another will grow cold. But the man who holds out to the end will be saved. ” - (Matthew 24: 11-13) -

Arminians were one of the first converts to Christianity even before the Byzantine Empire, which was the power in Palestine, turned Christian around 325 AD with the conversion of Constantine the Great. Thousands of Christians moved to Palestine to establish themselves and construct churchs. Under the Roman/Byzantine power, everybody was a Roman citizen except the slaves. Jews at that time, were still forbidden to enter Jerusalem, a brand new city constructed by the Romans circa 200 years before, when was totally destroyed to it's foundations. Constantinople the capital of the Bysantine Empire was in Greece, therefore the Greeks moved in and there were the Syrians too, of the Syrian church who still have the Mass in Aramaic, the language that Jesus spoke. How they recognize the Jews? They were the only ones circumcised. Hope that helps.

Modern Israelis have no connection to ancient Israel. Y’all are just Europeans who colonized the land with Britain and America’s blessing. Also, Armenians have been living in Jerusalem since they’ve converted to Christianity, it was not a result of migration from the genocide. And no, it was not a “legal” deal. It was done behind closed doors without the consent of the greater Armenian community, who immediately rejected the deal the moment it came to light.

‘Armenian Christians’: why do we do this? Why do we constantly place our core identities in accidents of birth? The tribal mentality linked to race/ethnicity, organised religion and language turns humanity crazy. 2 of these aforementioned (ethnicity/language - mother tongue) are given to us by accidents of birth; the other (religion) we kind of choose but, that said, the overwhelming majority of those who follow an organised religion follow the one which predominates in the culture in which they are born and raised, so this could be argued to be an accident of birth, too. So, essentially, we commit internecine conflict predicated on 3 accidents of birth. It seems human beings cannot cope with too much difference. We seem to existentially _need_ like-minded tribes. Nations. Religions. Gangs. Families. Clans. The evolved individual is able to think independently and not be in thrall to accidents of birth.

The Amazigh should get their land back and the armenians, also, should get their land back, much like the greeks! This a idea that islam is a native religion to all of the middle east, and that so are the arabs, is the most redicculous thing ever to be spewed by a barabarian's mouth! I know it might be har to understand, but, ARABS AND ISLAN ARE ONLY "NATIVES" TO ARABIA! All the other arab nations have been colonized by the islamic empires, from the Ummayds, to the Ottomans, islam has been a colonizing force, and one we all should see as one such repugnant force, and give the trully native peoples their rightfull land back. Azerbaijan, the land, was part of Persian Empire till 1828. They lost a war, 1826-1828, to Russian Empire and surrendered the land to Russian Empire. Russians called it Tatarstan. It became a republic in 1918. Joseph Stalin called it Azerbaijan and put Artsakh (historic name), NK, under Azeri control when it was 95% Armenian. Armenians have lived there continuously for about 2,700 years. Azerbaijan celebrated its 104th Anniversary in May 2022. There goes the saying that Coca-Cola has a longer history than Azerbaijan. Armenia has been a neighbour of Iran for thousands of years. There is no Azerbaijan or Turkiye on any historic map. Iran's history goes back to more than 5,000 years, and is the oldest country that had a formal government. Persians used to call the area Arran and Baku was called Badkubeh, windy place/land. A country with 106 years history (In May 2924) is claiming land from a country whose history officially goes back 4,500 years. Also, Istanbul was called Constantinople, City of Constantin. Ottoman Turkey was created in 1453 AD. Turkiye also celebrated its 569th Anniversary in May 2022. Yerevan the Capital of Armenia celebrated its 2,800 Anniversary about 5 years ago, and it is 28 years older than Rome. The West, because of Azer oil, calls Armenians in Artsakh, NK, occupiers, people who have lived on those lands for 2,700 years. Seljuke Turks and Mongols moved from East and Far East in 11-12 centuries to the area through Iran in 11-12 centuries AD. The West has for years falsified Armenian, Greek and Assyrian history.

Yerevan, capital of Armenia. It is situated on the Hrazdan River, 14 miles (23 km) from the Turkish frontier. Though first historically recorded in 607 CE, Yerevan dates by archaeological evidence to a settlement on the site in the 6th-3rd millennia BCE and subsequently to the fortress of Yerbuni in 783 BCE. From the 6th century BCE it formed part of the Armenian kingdom.

*I always thought that the religions (Christians, Muslims, Hindus) have their own quarters, but how did 🇦🇲Armenia (a country only existing since 1991) get a quarter for itself?* 🤔

Armenia as a kingdom existed way before 1991. Armenia (the country) itself actually doesn't own the quarter.

Pls go and learn the real history of the region, and do not rely on propaganda. Armenia is 4th oldest country (with formal organized government) in the world. Armenia, the first country accepting Christianity (301AD) has its presence in the Holy land for more than 2,000 years. Your tone of arrogance is coming through clearly. Armenia existed as a country even under the Soviet rule, as did 14 other republics, that is why they called Soviet Union, and not Republic of Russia. Now Russian is called Russian Federation. Also, Armenians' history goes back thousands of years. For your info. Azerbaijan, the land, was part of Persian Empire till 1828. They lost a war, 1826-1828, to Russian Empire and surrendered the land to Russian Empire. Russians called it Tatarstan. It only became a republic in 1918. Also, Ottoman Turkey was established in 1453 AD. Azerbaijan celebrated its 104th Anniversary in May 2022. Turkiye celebrated its 569th Anniversary in 2022. An Indian called them the new comers on the scene. Armenians have continuously lived in Artsakh, NK, for 2,700 years. And Eastern Turkiye was Armenian Highlands/Armenian Kingdom. About 3800 historic sites in Turkey are Armenian, about 3400 Greek, 600 Jewish and Assyrian, about 700 Turkish. Western Turkey was Byzantium (Greek)/Eastern Roman Empire. Seljuke Turks and Mongols from the East started moving West, through Iran (Persia) from 11-13 centuries AD. There is no name of Turkiye or Azerbaijan on any historic map of the world. Do not believe the falsified (by the West and for political reasons) the history of the region. One more info, Armenian Tamanyan regiment of the Soviet Union was the first to enter Berlin in WWII. The Soviet Union had more than 100 Armenian war heroes, 4-5 of their Generals, Marshals and Admirals were Armenian. About 500,000 Armenians of a small country and 1,800,000 citizen participated in WWII. They sacrificed between 250,000-300,000 of their people.

@@animalworld5296 -. More than 2000 years presence, and a part of countries safeguarding the Holy sites. With his reasoning, India & Pakistan, were colonies of Great Britain till mid, I believe, 1960s and should be considered countries with 70-80 years of history. How ridiculous is that?

@@nenadvojinovic7913- He lacks knowledge of the history of the region, especially Armenia and Armenians. He does not even know that Ethiopian Church, Greek Church, Armenian Church are the oldest churches in the Holy land. He does not even know that 15 republics who were part of the Soviet Union, were separate countries, e.g. Armenia, Georgia, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia etc. Or, he is simply being a smart Alec and anti-Armenian.
