Harley Davidson CVOs: Are they actually a really good deal???

  • My ‪@harleydavidson‬ CVO Road Glide has appeared in a lot of our videos, but I was recently asked if I thought it was "worth it." They really got my thinking about the cost of a CVO Harley and whether or not they might actually be a good deal compared to the standard Road Glide or Street Glide, even the Road Glide or Street Glide Special models. In this video we go through the costs of each upgrade, and how it all stacks up to a comparable bike. Then, in the end, we talk about what you end up with after you have spent all that money on a standard or special model Road Glide or Street Glide. To each their own, but here we go!

My favorite is when somebody bitches about the 40k CVO, but buys a 25k-30k bike and spends 10-15k to try to make it a CVO and they still fall short. 🤣

Every man has to buy a bike he loves. That thing is not my choice but that don't matter. I have a bike I love and turn to look at it every time I get off it. Got guys asking what bike should I by? Mostly I try to say buy what you love. Of course I do try to keep beginners on lower powered bikes. Otherwise buy what makes you happy! Buy what feels good! Buy what you are proud of!

The problem with having it done after market is, unless it’s done before it rolls off the line, chances for screw up are increased.
The factory line is always going to be a more solid build.

I agree with you for the most part on this Mr. Monkey. However, when you buy a CVO you’re not getting a unique custom bike. The mods made are Harleys choice not yours as an owner. Although the CVO is the top of the line, I would still ( as you did) make modifications. Based on this I bought a Road Glide standard over the special. I have spent about $3k on upgrade and am completely happy having that extra money to get what I wanted to make the bike mine. You have a great point regarding the resale aspect, but I didn’t buy my bike thinking of selling it or trading it in. Still, very good video. Thank you

Spot on. Only heavily customize a bike you’re going to keep or you lose so much. CVO’s are great for getting a “customized” bike that retains its trade in once you go to re up to the newest one in a couple years

You are 100% spot on....residual value is HUGE on CVO's too right now....the 19;s are STILL TO THIS DAY selling for 40k....yes...SELLING FOR THAT, not just getting listed for it....to this day I regret not buying that Mako Blue RG CVO....as I will still pay almost the same as new for one that has 5-10k on the odometer... I have a 2015 SG standard that I have dumped a TON of money into...everything you list...Custom wheels, chrome front end, Ohlins suspension, stereo work, seat, etc etc etc....and now I have a 50k motorcycle that has a book value of like 15k...LOLZ....luckily I love the thing....(I BETTER!!!)

She decided too small, went to brand new 2020 softail. 14 days later she wants radio, windshield, floor boards , heated grips etc. So I wasn’t going to put all the stuff on. This video confirms what I’ve been told at dealerships regarding what a CVO costs vs doing that stuff yourself. You’re still spending a crap ton of money for it, but you’ll have a bike with resale value instead of a really expensive Special with no equity at resale or trade time. We all make our bikes our own, with the understanding that it’s money you probably won’t get back. Thanks for spelling it all out.

I had a CVO as well and you hit the nail on the head. Outside the fact that if you customize a standard motorcycle, you’re still going to pay in the end close to or the same as you would a CVO and then if you sell or trade you only going to get the standard price. You may still add a few parts to make a CVO more your own, but it’s worth more to begin with.

Great Video. I think you nailed it. I just picked up a '21 Roadglide Limited. it's the blacked out version so I don't need to worry about all the chrome upgrades. I was debating between the Special with a detachable King Tourpack versus the Limited that the tour pack was included with speakers. Of course, over time, I will add some other accessories, but the only major upgrade would have been to go with the new Rockford Fosgate system. I opted for the J&M Stage 5. Installing that this weekend.

I think that one possible anti-CVO argument is “What else could you do with $40k that would be more fun?” In my case, I bought 3 used bikes. All 3 or 4 years old with between 2,000 and 5,000 miles (Garage Queens). Street Glide Special and Super Glide for me. Freewheeler trike for the wife. They already had a total of $10k in exhaust, intake, tuners, etc. And private party bikes in AZ are no sales tax. Everyone is different, but I’m much happier with 3 nice bikes than one super nice bike.

I bought a 2018 SG CVO.....in Gunship Gray.....and paid with all the pennies I had saved for many, many years.....I live in Colorado and after many phone calls and dealer research finally purchased my bike in Wisconsin from Harley Davidson of Madison.....and paid MSRP...not a marked up price....the monies I saved for paying MSRP and not a higher mark up price paid for a few upgrades I had installed at the time of purchase...Harley Davidson of Madison Wiscosin.....excellent dealer and excellent service.

They are! I once wanted to answer this question about Cvo value and bought a Road Glide Ultra and put the price delta vs a Cvo into parts and accessories. At that point I realized I still needed to invest about 8000 for special painting and engine. Since then I always bought CVO: 2 street Glides 1 Limited and I'm now closing a Road Glide. CVOs are definitely worth while the price.

I've had a CVO and am now on a Special. Both terrific rides. In my option, there are things on the CVO that added to the overall cost that I didn't appreciate. Additionally, I ride in Canada where we have a shorter riding season and it is tough to justify the extra doo ray mes ($$$). For those reasons, I can customize my ride to what I what versus the limit myself to the designers at HD. To each there own, if your pockets are endlessly (and you those can't take the money with you), spent until your heart desires. As you said, when you get off your bike, seek a peek and love it, that's the bike for you. In the meantime, thanks for the great videos.

It's less costly to buy the CVO than trying to make your bike into one. I have a 2020 Road Glide Special Eagle Eye. Of course I didn't stop there. I got the color matched tour pack not to make it an Ultra or limited but a Road Glide Special with a tour pack but it's a Harley so the upgrades never end. I see your CVO has upgrades too. We put together a side stand because it comes chrome on a ride that is supposed to be "blacked out as well as I got rid of the chrome bag latches and shift linkage. I'm around five grand in upgrades for a limited production bike and I haven't even gotten around to the bars and exhaust yet. Roll on and keep the rubber down. I subscribed so I can see more of your videos

Sitting on the showroom floor was a 1 year old CVO. I decided to make a lowball offer, and it was accepted. I loved it and still do. (My son owns it now).

Awesome looking bike, rode a cvo once and just couldn't get use to the fairing not moving with the bars turning left/right. It was just funky to me I'm sure it's probably something you would get a custom to. Great video you have a new sub. Love all the harley and jack in the garage. I would sit in my garage, drink jack smoke a cigar and just steer at my bike when not riding. Be safe my friend.

I ride a 2020 CVO Road Glide and enjoy it very much! The thing is we still do upgrades to the CVO as you have done to yours.I also have an 2010 ultra that is a great bike which I have also upgraded the engine, bars, getting ready to do the stereo next. And a few other things. This CVO is my fourth H-D in the last thirty years and every one has been customized in some way. I still think your going to spend the money one way or another to have a nicer bike

I ABSOLUTELY agree with you!! The new CVO… about $60k!!! Ridiculous!! I have about $40k in my 2017 HD UL!!! I know… RIDICULOUS!! But that’s what I like!! And it makes me HAPPY!! Your videos are AWESOME!! Thx for taking the time to
    make them!!!

In 2015 I traded in my 2008, BMW K 1200 LT. I was looking at a HD limited. The salesman at Harley Davidson told me that he could tell by looking at my BMW that I would not be happy with my purchase since he noticed, I added every single upgrade I could to my BMW. (heated grips, heated seat, navigation, remote, lockable bags, alarm. Etc. ) I want to buying a 2015 CVO ultra limited for $38,000. Seven years later I traded it in for a 2022 CVO RG and envious green fade. I wound up getting $23,000 for my trade! If I had purchased that non-CVO bike, I maybe would have gotten $14,000. The reason I purchase a CVO bike and I will continue to do so in the future, it’s because of the attention to detail and the feeling that there really isn’t anything major I can do to the bike to make it better.

Had a mate pick up a CVO , brand new, for a bargain price, because of the 'weird' paint, job.
It was a shocker - but didn't bother him. One happy camper.

i didn’t realize how close the mods were to the actual price of a cvo. if you want a custom bike you might as well buy it from harley all ready to go.

That's my thinking, as long as the CVO is what you want. For me the paint sold it.

if you like everything just the way it is, its a good purchase, if you think about altering things you might be pulling off those extra dollar parts just to put on what you want. the more you look at it and would want to change about it the more over priced they become. this is a bike you leave AS IS.

I completely understand about trade ins. 🤔 I just traded my 2009 Road Glide in for my 2021 Road Glide Standard. Trade got additional $500 because of the thousands I invested. But not near what it cost. Just quoted the trade rate according to the VIN. 😕

Had a ‘17 SGS that I bought new and made many upgrades to make it the way I wanted it. Lots of money and I loved that bike. Until I seen the ‘19 CVO SG same color scheme as yours. Seen it in March of ‘19 and couldn’t stop thinking about it but couldn’t find the right deal. It all changed when I found a new one in February 2020 that was the right deal. Absolutely worth it. Too much detail and options to ever list out. Matt Laidlaw of Laidlaw H-D said he priced it out. To take a reg SG and to purchase all the parts with labor to make it a CVO would be $30k easy. And all the work I did to the ‘17...... didn’t matter on trade. Dealer told me to original parts back on and sell later to recoup some money but they weren’t goin to give a better deal with them on. That even included the matching H-D King tourpack.

    I had 2 ! A 2000 , when it wasn't intended to be a Luxury barge. And a 2015 which was a bloated , overweight although competent bike. I went from that to a Road King , and now , after 35 years , I am no longer a H D rider.

Extras that I also got with my CVO was a battery tender, trike cover, pair of 30K Sena's, tour pack bag, trunk bag, highway pegs, and garage door opener. Plus the dealer threw in a couple of cheap ass HD beverage containers - spill proof (crap, I think I got bedazzled.)
