  • In this final episode, learn about the different stories of Black Arizonans who became successful entrepreneurs, doctors, artists and community leaders, but not without hardship. From culture shock to a sense of community, we discuss what it truly means to be Black in Arizona.
Navigation is key for Black Arizonans according to Lesley Ford, M.Ed. Ford explains how important it is to keep her culture alive while living in a predominantly White state. Even when working with others, she does not want to lose herself. But Alyx Porter, M.D., believes being Black in Arizona is all about being a pioneer. Dr. Porter says there are countless opportunities for growth and creativity in the Valley but mentions it can be isolating if people have not tapped into the Black community here.
For some, like Bruce Nelson, there are pros and cons for being Black in Arizona, and it depends where and when you grew up. As someone who grew up during segregation, Nelson explains it’s important to remember there is Black history in Arizona that is full of vibrant stories and people. Clottee Hammons adds Black history has been a vital part of the many facets that make up Arizona.
Arizona is flourishing, and as Chandler councilmember Christine Ellis says, “It’s the best time to be Black and in this moment and this time in Arizona.”

My family grew up with some Ragsdales in Muskogee Oklahoma. They were funeral directors too.

Very interesting I never knew that Arizona was like that, well I didn't know many states are like that. I thought all United States was All diverse as I'm from NY, and lived in LA, FL, Baltimore MD so with living in those states that I see diversity I thought All parts of United States was like that.
And I'm a person that likes to travel and move as well so I was interested in Arizona as a next move but I have to say I'm afraid to do that when I see the percentage of race

I moved to Arizona 30 years ago. I initially lived in Tempe, where I didn’t see a Black person for weeks. Even was even worse, when I moved to Scottsdale, AZ. There was only one Black person , in the entire subdivision . It was so depressing. My son experienced so much racism, in the schools, I had to fight the system, to make it safer for my son and other Non-White students. I am happier now, as more Black people are moving to the state.

Thank you for the information. I was looking into Arizona as a state to move. I want to be around the black working community though. I’ve lived among the white, the hood, and the black working community which I loved best…I want to move to another state. This video was helpful…I won’t have my entire family so it will feel lonely.

Fake answers regarding WHAT? Are you BLACK and do you live in ARIZONA? IF YOU ARE, I would like to hear your perspective. If you are NOT, then I'm not interested in hearing the BLACK EXPERIENCE from NON-BLACK PEOPLE!

I feel like there are similarities to the Black Nova Scotian experience. I’m now in western Canada (Alberta) and I certainly see the similarities of being Black in the west. I’m wanting to travel to Arizona & explore, and I always want to find Black local businesses to support- please mention any that you may know of! Especially if there are any Black wellness events or spaces 👏🏾🤎
