    This is going to be huge! Please developers, if you could implement a way to draw vectors the same way we draw them on Illustrator it would help SO MUCH! On Illustrator you can redraw vectors just by selecting them and using the pencil on top of it again. This would be a game changer for animators.

    I'd like a grease pencil with bezier curves, not sections. Less points, smoother curves, easier editing.

    • @jadebrimhall9173
      @jadebrimhall9173 5 лет назад +2

      There is simplifying the mesh and then converting that to curves. But you could lose control that you get from proportional editing. Hope this helps a little.

    why would you have color on your svg imported to blender 2.82? while mine imported from illustrator is grey?

  • @Architector_4
    @Architector_4 5 лет назад +6

    Duuuude. Imagine doing some kind of a SVG _export_ from Grease Pencil! It'd be ultra tricky though, as SVG hold 2D images only, as far as I know. But, maybe, with a bunch of math it would be possible to figure a way to do this from the camera perspective. Render out your animation from Blender with SVG, and then import into anything else with infinite quality! lol

    • @josephbrandenburg4373
      @josephbrandenburg4373 5 лет назад +1

      It's pretty simple math, actually. If it can import, it's only a matter of time before it can export. It's a much requested feature.

    • @Architector_4
      @Architector_4 5 лет назад +1

      No, I mean, with 3D orientation. You can draw in 3D with grease pencil, right? How exactly do you transform a 3D vector drawing into a 2D vector drawing? Sure, with lines it probably would be easy, but not so much with fills, or additional stuff like modifiers. You'd need to employ depth sorting, culling unneeded geometry and geometry that is behind other geometry, and so on. I don't think you can use OpenGL which Blender uses to rasterize it to draw it on your screen, as this is all vector based. Dunno, sounds tough!

    • @josephbrandenburg4373
      @josephbrandenburg4373 5 лет назад +2

      @@Architector_4 It's all linear algebra, so it can be done with matrices. There's a specific matrix called the projection matrix that takes 3D data and squeezes it into a camera- this is what Blender and any other 3D app uses to get images on screen.
      But you're right. I hadn't considered the depth sorting and all that. I imagine the exporter could use the same logic as the display, though.

    • @Architector_4
      @Architector_4 5 лет назад

      @@josephbrandenburg4373
      Maybe. I'd imagine they would have to reuse Boolean modifier code in some way for this, to occlude geometry.
      Smash it all into 2D using projection matrix, then figure edges of every single thing and use Boolean to separate all things by all edges into identically shaped overlapping shards of the original shapes, then perform depth sorting to figure which one of the shards should be used for each fragment, and then delete the other shards. Then find shards that belonged to one shape and are right next to each other, and combine then back.
      I dunno if this random method I've just devised is stupid and will not work for obvious reason X, or maybe I have just invented the future SVG exporter, or maybe I wrote a bunch of stuff that is nonsense for everyone else excluding me and by the time I figure that I would forget what I originally meant... lol

    Is there a build we can try this with now? I don't see a "Grease Pencil" target option in the SVG import for 2.83.

  • @bigalitstudios
    @bigalitstudios 4 года назад

    This would be amazing, as I mainly design my characters using vector shapes in Moho or Inkscape. I'm fairly new to Blender, and trying to draw vector based characters in Blender is painful (for me at least). I did a simple test in 2.82 beta yesterday. I drew a box in GP on a "lines" layer, and then filled that box with a color on a "fills" layer. One major problem I have with the way Grease Pencil works, is when you want to move/adjust points/vertexes, the fill color doesn't follow the points, because they're separate objects. Unless I'm missing something that isn't readily apparent, I wish the strokes and fills were more easily married together somehow, so that when I move a point or stroke, the fill color follows it perfectly and automatically, which is how it works in any other vector drawing program. I know the developers will probably work all these things out though, at least I hope they will, haha. Grease Pencil has ENORMOUS potential to disrupt a lot of other 2D software, just like Blender as a whole is doing for 3D!

    Trying this with 2.83 experimental build after no success with 2.82 stable build. Anyone got this working in the last 8 months since this video's release? Using Illustrator to save out my SVG. Is this the problem? Does the SVG carry extra info from Inkscape so Blender sees it as GP data? Any update on this would be much appreciated.
