You would have if you were touching a ground (something metal that goes into the actual ground or a ground circuit) this is something called Ground or CPC. Heater manufacturers should be responsible for grounding their meters & pumps to ensure that ac triggers the rcbo / mcb / rcd switch in your consumer unit
All of my equipment is plugged into gfci power strips which will automatically trip power off if any stray voltage is in tank I've heard of aquarium owners getting electrocuted really bad because equipment was malfunctioning I do suggest having a check valve on pump so when power trips you dont overflow sump
I had mine on a surge protector and it happens. It didn’t hurt the Betta but it gave me a low frequency constant voltage when I went to do a water change.
Great video about the voltage and glad you figured it out..yeah i had a similar zapping feeling into my sump on my old system but never lethal to any fishes everything was great...but good to know....
Basically you explained my problem from the beginning to 1:00 minute in, I'm reading 40V when I connect the positive side of my multimeter to my aquarium water and the Earth to my bedroom floor. I tried to isolate it by switching off the power to equipment, with each piece turned off I had planned to monitor the Multimeter to see if the current would suddenly drop off [Which was wishful thinking in my case]. But instead, as I disconnect equipment the current goes down instead of dropping off altogether. I'll disconnect something, the current drops. I disconnect something else, it drops further. My Dad was saying it's pretty serious, I've been trying to figure it out for the past 3 days.
Much better/safer method for determining which piece of equipment is causing the stray voltage is to plug each piece of equipment into a gfci adapter and seeing if the shutoff feature is triggered.
I been shocks so many times and I have a home with carpet I did it once barefoot stick my hand in the to one of my corals there was a shorted I didn’t know about because all 10 fishes was swimming beautifully I got shock so hard I had to lay down😢… Gfci outlet 100% percent is the way to go. Tried after and yes do does stop that scary problem and you can. But the only really was to test which one is causing the problem after that is to disconnect all plugs and connect it to your gfci plus one buy one and see which one trips after powering it on.
This is the best video on the topic and I'm still confused. Ideally we would have a clear-cut black and white means to detect voltage and current in the water. I turned off my heater and filter because my turtles are tough and can handle it and it's safer than risking a zap for any of us.
I’ve always used those titanium grounding probes for this exact reason. What fish died? Do you think it was because of the electricity going through the tank that caused their deaths?
I lost 3 clownfish and a dottyback. Pretty much the whole tank except a royal gramma who was always hiding and one of the sump clowns. All the coral was unaffected through the whole ordeal, which makes sense why the water parameters looked good.
Hello I have a pump that when I put in a plastic jar with water it doesn't electro shock me but when I put it back in the aquarium it's impossible to touch the water, why so and what to do please? Thank you
Thank you. Got the same feeling, same situation where it was only on a finger I had a cuticle cut on. Just watched your video and isolated it to a hang on back refugium light. It’s a zoa only tank so my first thought was it was palytoxin in the water😵💫
I have a ground wire installed in my sump. I measured stray voltage at 0.37. I have two Tangs with HLL disease. Trying to troubleshoot. Do you think the 0.37 voltage I am reading is anything that is contributing?
Hi, I have two sizes of the Tunze on two different Tanks (also the peninsula) and the blades never ever poped off. Don't know whats wrong with your model. The only 'problem' is going around the corner, if its too fast you loos the whole scrubber. But doing it slow it works perfect and you never get sand inbetween whats great. Give it a chance again 🤗
One time i got the shock of my life from my tank....turned out to be the heater. All the fish and corals were fine but not me. I trialed an errored the hard way...luckily i figured the heater was the culprit quickly (3 shocks later) 😅
Fantastic informative self sacrificing video. Do it again ! Lol. Oh yeah you got to be careful making a video with a kid on your lap chewing on a blade your looking for Lol and having a another hovering in front of his face , that will get you in some serious trouble! Don't be surprise if someone calls child services on you ..just saying bruh! Be safe and see you on your next video..
I guess you regret your lightning storm maroon clownfish....
hehe😁
So weird. I’m noticing the same exact thing. Haven’t lost anything, but every time I stick my fingers in my tank I get a sharp pain in my finger tips
This was my exact experience in video form. Thank you for making this.
I had a damaged heater that I was suspecting causing low shock to some of my fish.. I didn’t get extremely shocked though, just replaced the heater.

Good video.. may I know if you need to switch on the grounding point that you plugged your black cable to? Thanks.
I have the exact same experience and opinion on the Tunze scraper.

@Tanked Up. I see, so there's a distinction between an outright short-circuit and leakage...
Can I straight away have an earthing from the sump to the ground?
I was facing some weird shocks when the heater was off during Summers.

The only other possibility is some disease that got through qt
12:45 your baby was telling you that you should get rid that Tunze-blade for good and STOP SHOCKING YOURSELF!
Shocking!! I'm sorry. Couldn't resist.
beat me to it

Brother will the sock kill fishes?
Same problem wen i put hand it is shocking does it harm my fish pls pls replay
I've had problems with my uv sterilizer and heaters. Nice video.
what voltage is your meter set to?
How are you going to fix it? Grounding rod? Power conditioner? Make a video about that. 😊👍🏽
I just threw away the pump.
Had the same problem used the touch method found my UV sterilizer pump causing it lost all my snails before I finally figured it out
I had to do the finger test as well
Unplug than plug back in , thats it ... My shocking went away ..
use a ground probe into a gfi. thats all you need to do.
If there is lose voltage would you get shocked every time you put your finger in the water? My fish are flashing but i didn’t get shocked!!!
Nice video. Tank looking awesome so are you
Nice video. They do make ground rods for reef tanks.
Asdf 3po Yes they do.
So for you just replacing the pump worked ? How can I fix stray voltage would it be a bad ground wire?
It could be a lot of things, which is the annoying part when you have 10+ electronics in your tank.

Maybe I just need new blades. I am using the "strong" version.
Finally a new video. Where have you been?
Been raising a baby!
Great video! Very helpful! Thanks!
Excellent video
Zen Reef Thanks
I just had this issue with a heater
One time i got the shock of my life from my tank....turned out to be the heater. All the fish and corals were fine but not me. I trialed an errored the hard way...luckily i figured the heater was the culprit quickly (3 shocks later) 😅
So whats the solution.... wasted my time
I had this problem today and came across this video. So my conclusion is to basically get rid of the current filter and get a new one 😂
Someone help me out please. My 2 heaters are giving off 37 volts into the tank otherwise its only 5 volts is this normal?
I would replace them.
@@PuffDaddyReef they are both brand new less than 2 months old i already called up eheim and they wont give me replacements or even a refund...
Yes it is working it is giving current
Thank you sir
That's wild
Looks like you were feeling the effects at the end ⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️
This is what what has been happening in my tank 😱
Again, again!!! 🍿🍿
You got some of that purple hammer coral kush puff daddy?
THAT'S HOW I HAD TO DO IT !!
Good topic
I'm surprised the blade wasn't in his mouth
This video can be watched with no difference at x2 speed... Just saying
That's hilarious!
Yes! My middle finger and my pinky on the other!!!
There are so many wrong conclusions and misleading informstions here it's crazy...
I'm more confused than when I started watching this

LOL. I learned quick to keep my eye on him! Good thing it really wasn't a blade but a piece of plastic with the edge of a credit card.
Try to make short videos
Follow me on TikTok for short 15 second to 60 min videos. Instagram for 5 min to 10 min. RUclips for 10 min plus!
Can c
yeahhh…… ummmm…… I got nothing. nevermind..(shock)!!! oh wait.. DUHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm a dumbass!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Novice mistake putting hands in a powered up fish tank. All the aquatic books say do NOT do that.
