Kirin or Qilin is the so-called "Chinese unicorn", also known by such epithets as "King of the Four-Hooves" etc. Quite the prominent and much-referenced mythological creature in the Sinosphere. As a curio detail artistic representations of the things started looking not unlike giraffes after the famed eunuch Admiral Zheng He brought a few of those back from his fifth grand expedition (1417-19) which reached as far south as the port of Malindi in Kenya. This was also when they started getting pictured as _scaled_ owing to confused artistic interpretations of the big animals' characteristic reticulated coat pattern (which also inspired the Ancient Greek name _kamēlopárdalis_ "spotted camel", compare _leopardos_ "spotted lion", whence the archaic Western name "camelopard" - btw "giraffe" ultimately comes from Persian _zurnāpā_ "flute-leg").
@@felixthescholarlytitan4437 Well the name's the same. Fauna's kayfabe concept is basically an embellished dryad tho and has preciously little in common with the quasi-draconic four-hoofed critter. (IDK where and why vidya gaemz even started associating those with thunder and lightning in the first place anyway...)
0:09 "He's doing the KIRIN thing" not carrot. Referring to a monster in Monster Hunter World named Kirin, that do lightning things just like Rey Dau here.
Which is ripped straight out of the mythological bestiary of the Sinosphere; the "Chinese unicorn" _qilin_ is quite the prominent and much-referenced critter across East Asia. Took on some giraffe-like traits after the eunuch Admiral Zheng He brought a few of those back from Africa on his fourth "treasure voyage" in 1417-19. Also where the tradition of depicting them as _scaled_ started after artists got confused about depicting the characteristic reticulated coat patterns of the "spotted camels" (as the Ancient Greeks called the big animals).
@@blacksnow7106 ...you don't know what "Sinosphere" means do you. 😮💨 PROTIP: the Chinese cultural influence was _very_ strong across the entire Far East.
So nice to see another CB fan, plus the commentary made me smile.
