In today's video we discuss why retirement is not a time to play "not to lose" and why offense might be your best strategy!

John and Bev; you've changed my life! I've been watching your videos for about a year and after I watched your minimalist lifestyle and the Swedish Death Cleaning episodes, I slowly began the process of simplifying and downsizing. Now, a year later I have completed the process to sell /give away/ donate everything I own except my car and a roomful of stuff left at my best friend's house. It's the most liberating thing I've ever done and actually none of my friends thought I was crazy; they were supportive and a bit envious; some were even inspired by me to begin their own process of simplifying. The best part of the story is that once I cleared the physical clutter in my life, the mental clutter vanished too. And nearly immediately I was offered an amazing opportunity to go to Panama and work on a long-term nature conservation project. So, I'm learning Spanish and am leaving in June for my next adventure! Thanks so much and I'm happy you are enjoying South Africa. I may be leading a wildlife sketching tour there so I hope to head there this fall and do some volunteering there. Thanks for all your videos and the inspiration to follow my dreams! Hugs, Christine

This one hit me HARD! I have been holding myself back for the sake of my grown children, waiting for them to need me...I travelled extensively as a young adult, before I had my own family and bided my time until I could get back on the road. Now that I am free of responsibility to others I have been dragging my feet. Watching you two at the New River Gorge (not far from my NC home), jumping, made me want to lurch forward again. I am alone now but no less excited about journeying out. Thank you for the swift kick in the pants!

This is one of the best videos on retirement! My husband and I retired early and have embarked on our go-go years. We are having the time of our lives with lots of travelling. Just got into a conversation last week with someone still working in their seventies, not because they can’t financially stop, but they don’t know what they would do with their time. Just don’t understand it! My husband and I are taking on many of your recommendations. Keep posting. You are a great inspiration for all to realize what is possible!! @@rclose23 You can easily travel on your own. Solo travelers tend to meet more locals and enjoy great conversations with others. Yes! Yes! Best video ever. There are so many videos on Time Money and Stuff, especially stuff - hoarding, decluttering, arranging, cleaning. What to pack, what to leave out, how to arrange, in what bags, the best stuff, the worst stuff, but hardly any videos on Expectations and Ego. As a solo woman traveller, I receive a lot shock and surprise that I am adventuring alone. It is harder and easier to travel alone. A lot of the ‘hard’ is letting go of expectations and ego. Fear will probably always be my shadow but I am not going to get less fearful by sitting around at home. It is amazingly wonderful that you have each other but just to tell folks, you can also have joy, adventure and creative travels on your own.

The key is expenses. Low expenses, low amount needed for retirement. I have only averaged $50,000 a year over the last three years. Home paid off and no debts. This is less than 1% of my portfolio. Did all major work to my home back in 2020, new roof, siding, paint, along with renovating the bathrooms. Can get a fully subsidized ACA plan, keep my AGI in the 12% bracket and still live the life I currently do as a successful business owner. Just gotta keep that "Just one more year" voice out of my head. Retirement date, May 30th 2024.

I totally agree with the 3 stages of retirement. My sister died of cancer 3 months after she retired so I retired early at 61 and sold most everything and put the rest in a Pod container while I figured out where I wanted to retire.
I went to Spanish language school fulltime the first 7 months and am now functional in Spanish which is spoken in 26 countries.
I chose to retire in southern US but like taking several big trips a year as health permits. I was cured of cancer 7 months ago so I asked my financial planner to free up some money so I could travel this year now that I feel good. He did and Im so excited about my upcoming trips!
I imagine my go go years are about over but only the Lord Jesus Christ knows. It’s so comforting to know my times are in His hands ❤

I feel so alive when I'm out seeing and learning about new cultures, new (to me) parts of the world, and having adventures. I have NEVER regretted a trip I took, only those where I decided not to go. I've always been healthy but no one is guaranteed a future. Live every day like it could be your last and you'll never have regrets. My big problem is going to be spending down my savings and retirement income. Haven't really touched it so far and need to set a plan for how and when to pull the plug. You know, I enjoy your content but the more I watch the more I feel like your preaching to the top 10% that have a nice corporate retirement plan, 401k, etc. I’ve always been self employed, lived modestly, put kids through college, saved some money but not enough that a professional financial advisor is interested. So at 70 I’m semi retired and love traveling internationally part time, but work to travel. Sometimes I’m lost on your exuberance.

Thanks for your comment! We totally get where you are coming from. We grew up in homes where our parents worked hard to send us to school and provide a good life. Bev's parents owned their own business and started it with nothing but elbow grease and a dream. We know everyone doesn't come to our channel with the same experiences, and while yes, I left a corporate role, I certainly don't mean to alienate anyone who didn't. Living your best retirement means different things to different people. Trying to reach a broad audience with varied backgrounds is not always easy to do. YES! ALL good points! I recently stopped trading my own account and turned it over to Morgan Stanley so I could concentrate on traveling. Someday I’ll give your gal a call. I have downsized to all belongings fit in a car (well mostly, two more bins and most are tools.)😂 Trick for peeps having trouble letting go of souvenirs and bobbles… take a pic of it and you can visit ur “stuff”. I did that 10 yrs ago and I never looked at any of it. I don’t even know where that file is and don’t miss it.
For now I’ll be traveling the states as I plan to branch out. Your videos are the road map that will inspire me how to do that. I am so grateful, thank you so very much. Cheers!

Great advice John. I am a decade or so away from retirement, I am in the sandwich generation phase of life. I see many of these behaviors in my in-laws and other seniors around me. Seeing the fruit of their choices and, by contrast, the fruit of your and Bev's choices is very motivating. I am ready to downsize my over full house.

As a nurse since 1983 the most I ever made was $36,000 one year when I was a travel nurse.
I have always lived comfortably and frugal. I find less is more. My largest expense now that I’m 71 and retired is my traveling. I’m making memories that will always be with me.
In 2021 I downsized to a small townhome. I love the no maintenance aspect of my life.

What a great video… I agree with all of your points… especially not to live your last years defensively and according to the expectations of others; I’m not talking about “being a rebel” but simply asking yourself “now that you have the time and hopefully a little money, what’s on your heart to do” and then do it. When all our children moved away to a different province at the same time I was retiring ( my hubby retired two yrs ago) we decided to sell our home and put our stuff in storage and do some travelling while we decided where we want to live. We’ve been technically homeless now for 6 months and realized the joy of freedom from stuff! Freedom from expectations! Freedom from yard care and home utilities and taxes and so on; so we are putting off purchasing another home for awhile…😮
Not having a settled routine is the trade off, but oh! we are having so many amazing experiences as we travel, and visit our kids etc. We have the freedom to say yes to so much more in life because very little is holding us back. Thank you for your encouragement! We are about 10 years older than you two and I can already see that our health is already becoming our main limiting factor… (no long hikes for us, our knees can’t take it), so we are trying to do all we can while we can and we’ll settle down later😊. Much love to you both!

More and more people might face a tough time in retirement. Low-paying jobs, inflation, and high rents make it hard to save. Now, middle-class Americans find it tough to own a home too, leaving them without a place to retire.

The increasing prices have impacted my plan to retire at 62, work part-time, and save for the future. I'm concerned about whether those who navigated the 2008 financial crisis had an easier time than I am currently experiencing. The combination of stock market volatility and a decrease in income is causing anxiety about whether I'll have sufficient funds for retirement.

This is precisely why I like having a portfolio coach guide my day-to-day market decisions: with their extensive knowledge of going long and short at the same time, using risk for its asymmetrical upside and laying it off as a hedge against the inevitable downward turns, their skillset makes it nearly impossible for them to underperform. I've been utilizing a portfolio coach for more than two years, and I've made over $800,000.

There are a handful of experts in the field. I've experimented with a few over the past years, but I've stuck with ‘’Colleen Rose Mccaffery” for about five years now, and her performance has been consistently impressive. She’s quite known in her field, look-her up.

Great video. I would only semi-disagree on one point: a financial advisor. I would stick with a fee-based planner every year or two. A financial advisor who charges assets under management will eat an absolutely shocking amount of money over time. Most people should have a simple enough portfolio that it doesn’t take much management but having someone do modeling for tax and long term planning updates every couple years can be worth it.

Im fighting with myself about ego and stuff. The cottage is less expensive, less room and not where I’m expected to live at 68. Im so close to calling the agent. I have personally totally different approach: staying in my home, working in my 60ties (cause I love my job, not because I have nothing else to do) we are travelling a lot : at least 3 months in a year, but always coming home to relax before next travel, We love the way we managing high intensity part time job with keeping our "stuff"/house and doing gogo actvities at the same time. When I was working and someone would tell me that they didn't put money into their 401k to realize the company match I would ask them what they had against "free" money. Seriously the number of "educated" people who didn't realize how valuable that asset was through the company I worked for was insane. Look at all those little things that allow you to save money, it is amazing what an impact they can make at the end when you decide to retire.

Y’all! We just sold our home, jeep, truck & RV and board the plane with our 2 30# dogs for our move to travel France for a year before settling there in 5 days :) If folks like yourselves hadn’t been posting stories that it CAN be done, we might not have believed we could have made this our retirement. So funny what you say about stuff and expectations. We are WEIGHTLESS!! (Currently own 518’ of items to ship) and when we check in w/each other and say ‘are you feeling fear or anxiety about it all today?’ The answer is always ‘heck no! I wish we’d done it sooner - this is so exciting.’ The only anxiety is in the details of small transitions and those can all be managed. Thanks for keepin on keepin on - yall are genuinely inspiring!

Great video as usual! We agree with the go go/slow go/no go philosophy as well, but the arrival of grandchildren has made my wife slow our travel plans. So, I guess another important factor in retirement is to embrace inevitable change!
