I've recently been watching time team for the first time in many years, since 2011 at least. I didn't hear about his passing, I was too busy being an angsty teenager unfortunately. I'm so sad that he's gone. I'm enjoying watching him in the earlier time teams that I missed on account of not being born. Some of my earliest memories are of watching him on time team. Though I didn't go down the history route, I still have a deep passion for history and archaeology because of this man and all who made Time Team
I didn't discover Time Team until 2023 on youtube and have watched every episode i can get ahold of. I came to love and enjoy all the team and their banter and interactions. mick had been gone for 10 years before i saw my first episode the program has a quality that is superbly entertaining and educational with individuals who are all so engaging , i am surprised that Time Team was never rolled out like those franchise type programs. seeing all the original team members recall memories of Mick was very heart warming
Always interesting and delivered information in a non patronising way for those just learning about archaeology - i loved that about him - no doubt he had endless qualifications etc but he explained things in a way that made you feel an equal, like I had a right to understand as much as the next person. He seemed to be an incredibly fair man and that's a rare thing - I never met him but I felt like he was explaining things to me when I watched TT and that I knew him - I thought he was simply lovely. X
After 5 years I still miss this wonderful man that I never met but like thousands of others feel like I knew. I remember waking up to go to the loo in the middle of the night (am in Australia) and my son said that someone famous he knew that I loved had died and then told me it was Mick. I burst into tears, which seems so silly as I never knew him. I have so many episodes of Time Team which will always be one of my favourite ever shows, (have an old episode on now aqbout the Bolton Mint) and will miss him, his joy for archaeology and sharing his knowledge, and those wonderful daggy jumpers. Beautiful man, always missed. What a sweetheart you were Mick.
karen glenn I agree. Also an Aussie. So moved by this man that I donated the UK equivalent of $66AUD to the Young archaeologists club in England. Figured it’d be enough for a trowel, or something.
I am an American with Scot/Irish/Welch heritage. It's been a great fascination of mine to get an idea of what life may have been like for my ancestors. When I first discovered Time Team three years ago of course I was familiar with Tony but I was immediately draw to Mick.) He bucked everything I thought I knew about archaeologists and made me rethink just how human they could be. I started watching early episodes then I came across on that blew me away when I say Mick had passed away. I never looked at Time Team the same. At first I was so sad them I asked myself what would Mick say, I can never say for certain because I never got the chance to meet him but I think that he would first and foremost, want every life he touched to think of him with a smile, stay true to who and what they are, and remain passionate about learning. Thank you for making my humble little life that much richer. R.I.P.
I had not ever heard of Time Team until I stumbled upon one of their videos, because I like ancient history. Now I am in tears for a man who died in 2013. His legacy will live on for generations...
Wonderful tribute! Mick was a community man. He understood the true heart of a place just by holding the soil. I believe he has passed on many beautiful attributes to thousands. And the Team has come away with humble hearts. RIP Mr. Ashton you are so missed by so many people. ❤❤
Very sad to hear Phil's voice begin to crack at the end of that segment with the emotion and memories. What a great career they had together on TT. RIP Mick.
True inspiration to me, my favorite Mick saying, and he could just be wonderfully strong and persuasive without folks realizing it, but this once his reply to someone wanting to do something one way... Mick says "Well, I think what we have now is called a different plan".... that's just an absolutely outstanding phrase. RIP Mick, your legacy is much larger than you could have imagined.
It’s 8 years since his passing and this stranger still misses his character, love of life and love of history. I learned much from him and never felt stupid in the process.
An American here: Mick certainly knew his stuff yet he also showed us that he continued to learn and "stayed thirsty" for new information and knowledge. He didn't feign humility of the depth of his knowledge but instead was ready to guide us, even in a seemingly disappointing TT dig when Tony would cry out, "There's nothing here!" Mick would say, "Oh, but there is!" and he would proceed to teach us that even when you don't come up with what you thought you might, it's still useful information. He wasn't being a "Pollyanna" but true to his field of study. Many of us have - for the first time, perhaps - experienced that human history IS interesting and is ALWAYS unfolding and revealing something, and it is ACCESSIBLE to us ordinary folk and we OUGHT to realize it, appreciate it and can so easily become a student of that classroom. He's reminded me of the famous saying, "A mind is a terrible thing to waste." Thank you, Professor.
So touching. I watched Time Team from the age of 9 (when it started) until it ended. It ignited my love of history. I’m not an emotional person, but I had to blink away the beginnings of tears when Phil’s voice cracked.
The detail about phils voice cracking is so true, I wasnt as strong as you to hold them back though haha. Lovely guy and a huge loss to everybody around him and involved in this part of archaeology
I was 20 when it started, 40 ish when it finished. It was half my life, watching these people. It's daft, people I'd never met, but micks death hit me. I'm not one for that sort of thing, celebs etc, but he was open, honest and loved.
Phil your friendship with Mick , and Tony has been amazing to watch over the years ! Thanks for sharing it with the rest of us ! It is a great pleasure to rewatch your team work together during these terrible times ! RIP MICK ! PHIL have a couple pints, and remember the good times !
So sad to hear of Mick's passing. We really enjoy viewing Time Team episodes in Canada. You guys are so passionate about your work, and would be inspiring to students. Loved those sweaters (and socks and tuques) too!! 😂😂
He was instrumental in making Time Team a wonderful show. I would tell my wife that I would have loved to have such a professor when I was at the university.
what a big loss, I watch the TT videos on a daily basis but if Mick isn't in it for whatever reason its simply not the same show. He was larger than life and the glue behind the show
I never even knew he existed until well after he’d passed. But over the last few years I have voraciously watched and rewatched the episodes of Time Team and while I have always loved history and archaeology, Mick and his merry band of companions made it fresh and exciting. Well done all, R.I.P Mick and Robin both.
.....Yes, without question the duration of Time Team on Channel 4 is quite simply the greatest educational series ever to grace television screens, on par with the many BBC David Attenborough series. It had a universal appeal worldwide, was easily understood, with good humour, and showcased visually the knowledge and academia of the archeologists on the team that a young child or layman could easily relate too and enjoy/appreciate.....
Mick, I know you are watching so many new things come open to us. I feel your spirit at each dig, and know if we could have just one wish, it would be that you could be right there with all of us. Miss you Mick, the world seems boring without your insight.
Well, just yesterday I checked out a Time Team episode with Mick Aston and the Time Team gang. What a nice guy, with a kind soul - what more do you want. Best to Mick and all the Mick's of the world.
Wonderful human, who awakened many many people to the wonder of archeology and how we became who we are..sadly missed by a generation..Thank you Mike for your opening our eyes to the past, for your knowledge and for just being you.Thank you.
And here we are in 2024 & TIME TEAM is alive and well and BACK right here on You Tube with all new digs and most of the old gang & all new team members some of whom were children when the show first aired back in the day and are now experts... Mick your legacy live on! Sutton Hoo anyone!?
I didn't realize that make has been gone for ten years now or coming up close to 10 years I honestly don't know when he died but I just saw this video in August 2023. I just ran across time Team videos sometime during the covid pandemic on searching for something worth watching RUclips. I have been inspired by this show and each person on it. I feel some like the person who said that they'd never met Mick but they felt like they knew him. I'm sure of what I have seen on the program is just a small fraction of a man passionate about his craft with a heart for people. Blessings.
I continue to watch episodes of Time Team today here in Australia, it seems the nice blokes always leave this life early, but at least he would of known that through his efforts and kindness many people that didn't even know him will be saddened by his passing, myself included. R.I.P sir
its a bit of a cliche to say it but he was one of the unique ones, a character. it'll be the same when someone like Billy Connolly pops off for a wander and forgets to come back, you dont get two of them.
Very sad. Also sad that shows like Time Team aren't being made any more. PS. Timeteamster, please check your comments, there's at least one here that needs removing.
I watch lots of Time Team. Wanted to know why Mick Aston always wore that ugly sweater. This is where I realized he had passed away. Sad times for all the team. He's in all the shows I've been watching still don't know the meaning for the sweater? RIP Mick.😟😥😥
agnostic was Mick. He was a "proof" man. He needed "to put his fingers into the wounds" - & never was able to do that. Very interesting man, to be so interested in early Christianity, yet such a firm non-believer.
They hired Mary Ann Ochota and moved the focus away from archeology and more on to anthropology. He felt (and was) betrayed and basically told them to go fuck their hats. You'll notice Tim Taylor, the producer of TT didn't offer any condolences.
What's the name of that programme where Tony Robinson plays a complete idiot, who knows F all about anything and keeps annoying people with his cunning plans?....Oh yeah, the Time Team.

I never knew him, but can say that I miss him.

They're on the channel 4 site! You have to sit through ads, but hey that's what telly used to be anyways

I met Mick when I was at Manchester University studying Ancient History and Archaeology. RIP to a fantastic man.

What a one of a kind personality. This world remains a little less bright without him here.
Very sad to hear Phil's voice begin to crack at the end of that segment with the emotion and memories. What a great career they had together on TT. RIP Mick.
It was that moment when he realized what he had lost.
Phil was crying from the first part. He was barely holding it together...
Even Francis’s voice was breaking at the end of his comment on Mick
True inspiration to me, my favorite Mick saying, and he could just be wonderfully strong and persuasive without folks realizing it, but this once his reply to someone wanting to do something one way... I am new to the Time Team. I never saw an episode that Mick was not in. He was an amazing man. May his name be remembered for only the best. Shalom
he will be sorely missed.. his knowledge ...his wit ....his charm....Time Team will never be the same without him.....
i loved mick and i never knew him. sooo many viewers did. quite the testament, indeed.
It’s 8 years since his passing and this stranger still misses his character, love of life and love of history. I learned much from him and never felt stupid in the process.
Kindness personified and in the times we now live in we need an army of Mick Astons. RIP sir.
An American here: Mick certainly knew his stuff yet he also showed us that he continued to learn and "stayed thirsty" for new information and knowledge. Rip mick, such a nice man and a legend. Time team wouldnt be the same without him.
Seeing this for the first time in 2020. I find myself teary-eyed; I loved TT and Mick, Phil, Tony etc.
So sad to hear of Mick's passing. We really enjoy viewing Time Team episodes in Canada. You guys are so passionate about your work, and would be inspiring to students. Loved those sweaters (and socks and tuques) too!! 😂😂
-at least on youtube Professor Mick Aston will always be around. And with the MICKMOBILE he is also on each and every dig.
He was instrumental in making Time Team a wonderful show. I would tell my wife that I would have loved to have such a professor when I was at the university.

I cried when he passed not going to lie loved that man
Mick never liked churches. But he was always looking for them. May God bless him & keep him. R.I.P.
I can picture Jesus complaining bc Mick keeps putting trenches across the front of the pearly gates.
No adds in any of the tributes. Even utube respects the man. Hats off, Mick!

Time Team is and will always be awsome, have them in my memories of great people.waiting for the new episodes I will miss the ones who will not be on.
Yes ... a great, lovable person is always a loss. But what such a person sows bears fruit and makes him unforgettable.
Mick, I know you are watching so many new things come open to us. I feel your spirit at each dig, and know if we could have just one wish, it would be that you could be right there with all of us. Miss you Mick, the world seems boring without your insight.
How sad is death that it takes away all that's good. All we can do is remember what we have lost and hope for better days ahead.
Much Thanks !
Well, just yesterday I checked out a Time Team episode with Mick Aston and the Time Team gang. What a nice guy, with a kind soul - what more do you want. Best to Mick and all the Mick's of the world.
Man that's making me cry and I knew nothing of Time Team until 2020. It's getting me through the pandemic. I want to know who Mick's knitter was!
We miss you Mick. Your legend lives on❤
I still miss Mick very much. I still feel an emptiness from the archaeological field and the human race.
Wonderful human, who awakened many many people to the wonder of archeology and how we became who we are..sadly missed by a generation..Thank you Mike for your opening our eyes to the past, for your knowledge and for just being you.Thank you.
How can seven people not like that. RIP Mick.
Rest in peace Mick ! A true Gentleman ! A man of the people ! It was fun to watch him , and the crew from the US.
RIP Professor Mick Aston. You are an inspiration to so many and your work will live on through them.

Aw he has passed sad. Was so nice to see him and hear him on your digs?
He died so young. He was only 6. At least that’s the amount of enthusiasm and energy he displayed. That at of a child.
Still get choked up in 2019

He was a huge part of the show, RIP
RIP🕊️ Gone way too soon.
its a bit of a cliche to say it but he was one of the unique ones, a character. it'll be the same when someone like Billy Connolly pops off for a wander and forgets to come back, you dont get two of them.
It's a shame what channel 4 did to him on the show.
Very sad. Also sad that shows like Time Team aren't being made any more.

An atheist about another atheist, his death makes me to (I want to) believe in the afterlife, the Elysee Fields ...
agnostic was Mick. He was a "proof" man. He needed "to put his fingers into the wounds" - & never was able to do that. Very interesting man, to be so interested in early Christianity, yet such a firm non-believer.
how did he die? it’s well sad that’s happened i loved that man
3 minute video and no sound what a tribute
💖💕💖💕
:(
Why did Mick quit TTeam?
They hired Mary Ann Ochota and moved the focus away from archeology and more on to anthropology. He felt (and was) betrayed and basically told them to go fuck their hats. You'll notice Tim Taylor, the producer of TT didn't offer any condolences.
What's the name of that programme where Tony Robinson plays a complete idiot, who knows F all about anything and keeps annoying people with his cunning plans?....Oh yeah, the Time Team.
And, he is back doing the same thing again on the new TIME TEAM...
RIP Mick
