    Everyone from the beginning of this profession to the end should do some type of physical fitness training. Not just for health but for your survival and fellow officers survival on the job.

    Respect, humility, honesty, integrity, communication and compassion are my tool box. Those have been more useful throughout my career than any spray, gun, baton or set of cuffs. Over 10 years and I can count on just one hand the number of times I've had to use force. 99.9% of the time, I can get an offender to comply simply asking them to do the right thing. Your rapport and reputation go a long way in this field. You will find that the key is to yourself be a decent human being so that others are inspired to model your behavior.

    • @rodcar2166

      Yup level 2 yard. Your tool box that we've taught you to say doesn't exist in a level 5 yard. Yeah you tell the judge " I just reach in my tool box and used what was available " Your words come right out of a book. The answers to every test that we give you, so no one fails. Your either a girly boy or never been on a level 5 yard. It's OK society is a mix of All-America. Stfu with your corny inspired model shit. Probably work at old joe arpio tent city. Communication, compassion it doesn't exist in a male facility. Gave an inmate an extra tray back in 97. 12 years later it got me a shank to my left forearm. Your career lmao its been 10. Transfer to a level up.. better yet get out of AZ come to Cali, and if you retire with out a new knee and noooo slashes, prune stench or any broken bones. Inmate Conspiracies. I'll beg to differ.

      Definitely true. I got out of the military after 7 years and passed all testing to become a CO. Having to depend on some 19 year old, out of shape, former gas station attendant to get my back was pure frightening. It's like the correctional system has no standards when it comes to hiring. I had to get the fuck out; I'll be damned if I'm going to survive three combat deployments then come home and get killed by some scumbag prisoner.

    I wish we would have received this kind of training when I started in the Missouri Department Of Corrections as a CO. Our training was only one month and it was spent in the classroom 97% of the time. When we graduate we are basically fed to the sharks on our first day as COs because we did not receive adequate training. Most of our training comes from learning while performing the duties. Just like most our new officers do not know what they are getting into and most of the time they either quit out of fear or they get this sense of empowerment other the inmates.

    Both law enforcement and correctional officers are awfully dismal in hand to hand prowess. Being a skilled fighter requires more than just 4 1/2 to 6 months duration that comprises police academy training. If police departments want to ensure that their recruits can hold off an angry criminal, upping the fitness requirements is a good start as not all police are fit, and because it comes in handy in more cases like chasing down criminals for example.

    I spent over 7 years in prison in NY , and almost none of the correction officers are in shape. This training is a joke compared to how hard most guys work out in the gym and yard. And guns aren't allowed inside the fence or wall. CO's carry pepper spray, gloves, an emergency help button, and a wooden baton. Most CO's are miserable and fat and over tired from working double shifts. This training looks good to people who don't know better, but I know the truth first hand. Very few CO's are in shape , many of them smoke cigarettes and chew tobacco as well. That is the truth from my experience in NYSDOCCS (New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision) custody. Training is a joke.

      Inmates will eat a jar head up and spit them out. It's about attitude and respect in there. Treat them like they are people and they will treat you with the same respect. Go in with a hard ass attitude and they will win every time.

    • @lcplmeeks4399
      @lcplmeeks4399 3 года назад

      I will say this. As a jar head myself I have a very strict attitude. Im only a Lance Corporal (I'm getting my rank this weekend) but I carry that save motivation that boot camp gave me. It works for the most part, but inmates dont care if your were in the military. Some of them will bullshit you and try to make you believe that they were in infantry when most of the time they were not. Also, OC spray (in the moment) is worse than the gas chambers but we all remember how the gas chambers made us cough for days. Also dont ever think that a sergeant in the DOC is weaker than a sergeant in the marine corps. Ive seen sergeants in the DOC take down Mfs twice their size and I never wouldve seen a marine sergeant fight anyone unless it was a hostile student/ private. Sergeants in the Doc are sergeants for a reason. They've got grit and attitude and thats something Ive come to respect. Keep in mind this is Florida Corrections so its mostly soft people as it is. The training was easy as shit, but something Ive kept in mind is the statistic that the DOC is the highest percentage chance of PTSD in the whole state, and I believe that after seeing my first night shift as a botched suicide inmate who still ended up killing himself
