    I Recently started building my own Tropical courtyard to help provide a low elevation screen for two 10 foot tall greenhouses in the background and later a 25 foot tall tropical tree house. My main challenge is i'm building on a hillside, so i'm currently building pressure treated bulkheads to retain and build up the base soil elevation in the inner courtyard to provide a level surface for a small 12 foot round pond with planting beds around the courtyard perimeter and Astroturf for the inner flat surface area to cut down on maintenance issues. My first plant selections are Cavendish banana and red and green elephant ear plants and natural local ferns.

    Absolutely loved this tour. Love the banter between you guys.
    The mix of plants is class. I share his views on the borderline palms planted outside. It's almost a right of passage that we all have to have a go but then decide wisely against it after losses along the way.
    I'd love to know how he winter protected that first clump of cycas revoluta as after winter they look amazing.
    He's clearly sunk a few quid into his garden and it looks absolutely amazing.
    My favourite thing of all though is Gustav Baron von Winklesniffler 😂😂. What an absolutely fabulous name. Great video George. Loved it. Thanks Mark for the tour

    • @GeorgesJungleGarden
      @GeorgesJungleGarden  Год назад +1

      Thank you very much Mr Calzone, Mark's done a great job with the garden and an equally fantastic job sharing it! I thought the mix of plants would be up your street and whilst his Australasia bit is maybe more like my garden, the Cycad / arid bit will definitely have a similar vibe to your exotic collection. Yes, he's certainly put the cash in but I know they get a lot out of their garden so absolutely money hard earned and well spent in my eyes. The first Cycad bed is actually new, you might recognise them from my look around Linden Nurseries but he's definitely going to build a shelter over it in future winters. Haha great highlight choice, I don't know if that was improvisation from Mark or Gustav's full name but it wouldn't surprise me either way haha! Cheers for watching and I'm pleased you enjoyed it.

    • @vincenzecalzone8666
      @vincenzecalzone8666 Год назад +1

      @GeorgesJungleGarden Thanks for the info mate. That cycad bed will be his biggest challenge to keep looking good. Looks so sharp and green at the moment. I've found irrespective what I do with them they get damaged. Bring them in for winter they get sunburnt no matter how gently I reintroduce them in the spring. Cover them up with fleece and they still sustain frost damage and browning. The best compromise I've found is leaving them outside and wrapping them up against the house but not an option for him with the size of the clump. I think the only realistic way of keeping them that good is almost building a clear polycarbonate housing around them. Maybe that's what he'll choose to do. Either way I'll be fascinated to see how they turn out. For me cycas revoluta are one of the most exotic and tropical looking plants there are but at the same time one of the most frustrating to try to overwinter. Good luck to you Mark with the winter and enjoy how fab they look during the summer

    • @GeorgesJungleGarden
      @GeorgesJungleGarden  Год назад +1

      @@vincenzecalzone8666 I agree. The best way I’ve found to overwinter my potted ones is literally abandoned in a (just) frost / freeze free polytunnel, they come out green that way. Yes, if you bring them in the sunburn is a battle and as you know takes ages to grow out. I think Mark will go down the fully polycarbonate shelter route to be fair, now he’s learned the lesson with the other ones. They are incredibly cool plants, they’re sort of a cross of a fern and an arid plant but with extra primordial funkiness mixed in, I can see how he was impressed seeing them planted en masse.

      @GeorgesJungleGarden  Год назад +1

      @@Thumtwiddler Personally I don’t grow Ricinus currently or anything horrifically poisonous that also looks attractive (berries etc) but there’s so many plants which can technically be toxic it would be hard to grow a 100% safe garden. I think it’s something that depends on the individual and what their dogs are like. Our Remi is a bit of a chewer but that’s generally only chopped or bamboo or fallen fern fronds etc, I don’t think he’d ever try to chew a cycad plant for example. But yes, you can mitigate risks by growing in pots, tidying up and having safe vs. supervised areas of the garden potentially.

      @GeorgesJungleGarden  Год назад +1

      Hi Maxine, I don't think you should need to prune them unless you're looking to shape them but probably the first thing I'd look at is the watering. It's been sunny and dry recently and plants in pots do struggle the most so I'd maybe try giving it a proper good soaking and maybe a feed if the compost is very dry?

    Completely off topic George.....
    Im getting ready to plant out a young Tetrapanax. Would you treat it as an exotic plant and backfill the planting hole with rich compost/manure, or would you treat it like a tree and backfill the planting hole with garden soil and once planted, mulch with compost/manure.
    I once backfilled a Trachycarpus planting hole with compost and the roots just spiralled round in the rich medium without growing out into the soil. Rookie error.

    • @GeorgesJungleGarden
      @GeorgesJungleGarden  Год назад +1

      Hi Gareth and apologies for the delayed response. I wouldn't beat yourself up about the Trachy, it'll find it's way into the soil eventually. I know for trees it's a bad idea to backfill with rich compost etc but for most other plants, I wouldn't say it's the end of the world but generally I'd usually recommend a mulch personally. That way you get the added benefits of retaining moisture and keeping weeds down as well as improving the soil over a wider area.
