Seen review about halo effects in the mixed live action/CGI scenes that is appearing when upscaling, did you notice that?
Bought it today and I ran here to see the reviews on it. I appreciate you guys who do the reviews on 4K uhd movie's.
This why it pays to have some 3 and 4 disc 4K replacement cases on hand. They're not cheap but they pay off when discs are stacked.
Watched it today. Looked AMAZING! Definitely a disc to throw on when wanting to showcase 4K and HDR. Watching Part Two tomorrow.
Thanks Adam - rewatched Avatar a couple weeks ago and forgot how emotional some of those scenes could be even when in full CGI
I got the 4K disc for the eye candy, but I never got all that emotional watching the movie way back and didn't get emotional this time either. I do still think it's worth it for the eye candy, even though some of the stuff can look fairly cartoony thanks to the CG and animation being pretty old (but I feel like the facial expressions improved much in the final half of the movie, so I suspect that they actually got better throughout the process).
So how much space this 4K blue ray disk version have taken? I think the blue ray original disc also was about 43gb
Thank God Disney's clown audio mixers weren't let anywhere near this
Don't blame the audio mixers, they are just following orders from Disney
This is why 4k is a useless physical medium and digital downloads are popular; poor remastering an inconsistencies. if i'm dropping over $35 on one movie, it better be perfect. The only great transfers off the top of my head were the original Star Wars and Jaws; Also Jaws was remastered in 2012 for a blu ray, doesn't count much.
So what you're saying is if I walked into a room of Disney audio mixers, the first thing I'd notice is that they're dressed as clowns?
Yes, they actually were. Both films suffer from typical Disney laziness and filtered bass.
@@millabasset1710I would not say useless. 100 gigabyte disc when properly authorized with Dolby Vision it's the best format ever released. Will 95 percent of people care? Nope, but if you love movies there has never been a better time. Especially niche and horror movies released by boutique labels like Shout Factory.
Wonderful review Adam!! I was super excited for this review. I agree with all you said. Why oh why did they stack disks??? I mean the disk is expensive has it is, why not spend a few cents for trays? The other thing I wanted to mention, it's a gorgeous disk, but I noticed some shots the Navi looked like videogame characters and then in the same scene those same Navi looked amazing. I know it's an old film. Was just funny to me. Also sad no other cuts of the film. But man the movie looked fantastic on 4k. Looking forward to Way of Water review. Thanks Adam.
As great as the technology is and was for the original Avatar, much of the cg was still rendered at a 2kDI so it occasionally looks a little off. In the new film it’s much less noticeable.
@@MovieGuy365 definitely agree. I wonder if Cameron will ever go back and rerender the first. Maybe for a box set with all the films. Definitely need to get his other films first tho haha
@@MovieGuy365did you notice the extra extension at the end where Parker had one last comment? I hate when they alter theatrical stuff.
Great Video! Most likely to pick this one up. Slowly building my 4K Collection. Thanks!
4:18 Disney’s Clown Audio mixers were not allowed anywhere near this track😂😅
Adam can be super funny sometimes it's great!

They are just following orders, the mixes are not bad because of the people working on them
Amazing review, I recently found your channel and your videos are gold, I'm not a fan of this movie, but I enjoyed your review so much, keep it up!
Disney "clown audio mixers," love it Adam!
Enjoy the video I'm new to physical media where do you get your black shelves behind you for your Blu-rays & 4k's thanks

Good to hear this has a worthy Atmos mix!
I like that you’re rating the packaging now. Pretty cool idea.
It doesn't have a worthy Atmos mix. It's an Atmouse mix.
@@dan_hitchman007 Films At Home also said the Atmos mix was pretty good. I guess I’ll have to see for myself. What are your complaints with it?
@@shinedown54 Films At Home rarely knows what he is talking about. I'm just spitting facts. One good thing about Shane Lee's reviews (aside from the video aspects because he doesn't know anything about film grain and thinks everything should be shiny and smooth) is that he has a Trinnov Altitude processor. It has a Dolby Atmos track analyzer, so you know what's going on visually while the soundtrack is being decoded. Both Atmos tracks are heavily static at 7.1.4 with only sporadic use of 3D objects that track to multiple speakers in the 34 speaker locations of home Atmos. Much of the time the overheads are used for music fill, even during scenes you think should be utilizing 3D audio panning. The bass on both tracks is heavily filtered at the 30 Hz range, and they are lacking in bass transients and even subsonics (for explosions and the like). These are pretty much Atmouse tracks.
I enjoyed the Atmos track a great deal. I thought it did an awesome amount of overheadoanning and the bass was righteous. Not hearing the problem myself.
Dual subs and 11 channel.
Here is what annoyed me. I always play the 4K foe the audio amd watch the 3D for visual...but the 4K had an extra scene at the end. It caused it to go out if sync. I wish Cameron would re-release thd 3D with thst added scene to at least make them equal!
@@humphreybogart6663 It depends on your home setup. You won't hear some of the Atmos usage problems because you have a 7.1.4 layout. I have a larger system and with more overheads too, so I do notice the deficiencies. I have dual subs that can hit high SPL's prodigiously even at 15 Hz, but the movies are lacking in bass punch when appropriate. Very lean, quite disappointing.
Great review. Im not a fan of the movie, and doubt i will buy. But I really like your review, especially how you compared the disc to the streaming version. This really makes me appreciate what you put into your other reviews.
The movie targeted adolescent boys.
Lol ironically, a girl is who dragged me to go see it.
Thank you Adam.
Hi Could you show the blu ray menu for the avatar 2 4k please
is the first Avatar 4k movie on theater mode? u know the 2 black lines on the screen or is it full screen?
Stacking 4K disks is crazy. I don’t understand who is making this decision!? Hate seeing that. They always come scratched or loose in the case.
I just bought this SUPER HIGH DEFINITION version and yes it has NEVER looked better. 4 stars.
Which version is that?
@@thischannelisdeleted The 4-K Ultra.
hola va salir una version extendida no? este mes
Yes, the 19th.
When ever I had a conversation about this movie. The visuals never quite came up. It was always about the substance
Do you mean the substance that James Cameron stole from other movies (Pocahontas and Dances With Wolves ) or the creatures and weapons/ vehicles from different video games ( Halo, Gears of War, Final Fantasy) ? It still baffles me how many people still fall for him. He treats movie collectors like garbage (Terminator, Aliens, T2), either no 4K release or wrong color palette , massive DNR. I think Idon't need to mention the ridiculous farce regarding True Lies or The Abyss ! I saw T2 1991 in the theatre , then i thought he will be considered the greatest director one time in the future.Guess I was wrong.
Unfortunate that a lot of people are unwilling to start a healthy civilised discussion(or a short response at least😎) even when valid points and facts are on the table.
Had the 4k version on download ages ago
Great video Adam, thanks. I'm sure this version looks very lovely - but as far as I'm concerned the definitive disc edition was released over a decade ago: This is a movie, along with it's sequel, that I have no interest in watching in 2D.
Amen honestly I like the 4K but it feels like sinning seeing it in 2D
So much better on blu ray 3D
I love AVATAR extended. Not sure whether I'm buying this 4K yet. Good review.
I was never the biggest Avatar fan and I hadn’t even seen it in about 10 years so it’s better than I remembered. That being said while the 4K is gorgeous it does make the film look dated already. However I’m just glad it wasn’t a DNR nightmare like Cameron’s Terminator 2 and I have high hopes when The Abyss and True Lies get released they will look just as good.
I agree with the strong picture quality. I disagree with the audio. While satisfactory and better than what most Disney titles are like, that is it. So many movies out there, and older ones at that, that have better upgraded Atmos mixes.
Is this the version that was rereleased to theaters last year?
Are you going to do Vanilla Sky? Got it already, meant to watch last night but still curious what you'd say about it.
I’ll be posting a short review in the next day or so.
@@MovieGuy365 great news
The lack of Dolby Vision is just one more example of what a terrible company Disney has become. I wish they'd just go under and lose all of their copyrights, so that other companies could start properly relesing all of the films & shows that Disney is holding hostage.
Disney pays Dolby for Dolby Vision licensing for its streaming versions of movies but refuses to pay it for disc releases. It's absurd but, let's face it, Disney does not feel that Home Theater/AV enthusiasts are its primary customer base. That is likely families with low to mid-level 4K TVs and, at most, soundbars. So even though, while well done HDR10 can produce very good to excellent pictures, Dolby Vision, in most cases, is better but the Magic Kingdom isn't going pay Dolby any more than it has to. Case in point about HDR10 vs. DV: I watched some scenes from Avatar 2 using my Apple TV 4K and Sony QD-OLED TV in both formats. The HDR10 image was very good but was not as dynamic as I would have liked while the DV image was very dynamic. It was brighter and had more contrast so the image really "popped". The one thing that may make a difference here is the significanctky higher bit rate that's possible with discs. Ralph Potts, over on AVS Forum, gave the HDR10 version of Avatar 1 a 100 video score. He said that he saw little difference between the HDR10 and DV versions. I'll find out later today when my package from Best Buy arrives.
They want you to stream
@@ModernPlagueok but if this looks incredible without the DV anyway then I don't really care
@@Chrisratata Fair point. But even if there's no difference in picture quality, it's still slimy of Disney to withhold DV from the physical discs as an enticement to subscribe to D+. It's also a disservice to physical media to make discs seem like the inferior option.
@@Chrisratata - Woops, I accidentally deleted my comment about Disney sneakily editing/censoring/altering their streaming content...
Has this AI-upsampling tech ever used for any other Disney 4K release as well?
How about this for a What If?
What if you could watch 3D Blu-ray movies at 2160p, just imagine what that would look like with Dolby Atmos/DTSX/lossless audio.
This is what studios and TV manufacturers should’ve worked towards instead of (at least in terms of TV manufacturers), 8K on limited hardware, like why?
Maybe one day? 4k in 3d would be so cool. Unfortunately people just didn't support 3d so tv manufacturers stopped. Imo it was lazy post converts, cross talk, and consumer expectations of what 3d actually is. If you ask a casual viewer 3d to them means stuff coming out of the screen, where the true beauty of 3d is the depth into the tv that is the magic.
@@travislansford6925 I’m hoping for a resurgence considering way of water but I guess more native content is needed and less post conversions, unless studios can take care and not just throw anything out, balls to the walls and all that.
@Eva_H me too, me too. With the coming Apple Vision Proz there could be a resurgence of content and I know there are projectors that still support 3d. With that it would be glorious to have 4k oled 3d tvs. I can't imagine it's hard for tv manufacturers to implement, but maybe it is. Let's keep our fingers crossed. I know other parts of the world still get 3d releases. Looking at you Avengers.....
@@travislansford6925 at the moment consistently it’s just the Marvel movies if you want to get the Japanese release.
I really want to get the Japanese release of way of water, mainly because you get the 4K and 3-D in one package, both in standard and steelbook releases.
I’m happy that at least manufacturers wanted to still implement it in their projectors, although in the case of Sony is usually the higher end at this point.
Then you’ve got the ultra show which is when all bets are off and you’re guaranteed to have an integrated 3D emitter.
I just think it’s a shame at this point, that the format has been left, essentially exclusive to cinemas, that said I wasn’t too happy with Super Mario brothers from the perspective of why no IMAX 3D or Dolby 3D, why? Even if we did get a barebones 3D release in cinemas.
Didn’t the new transformers movie get a 3D release?
Well, you'd need double the vertical or horizontal resolution so that each eye gets a proper 4K image. While I'd love to see it... you'd require a 200 GB storage media for that and a brand new 4K player that can play those discs. And that... seems kinda unlikely with how poorly triple layer discs are read. Non-disc media would be too expensive, so... it pretty much requires a new kind of disc that may or may not be a blu-ray disc variant.
Picked up the Walmart exclusive of the Way of Water but neither Walmart or Target had the first one. Guess I'll just have to swing by Best Buy after I'm done with work for the day. The lenticular on The Way Of Water Walmart exclusive looks pretty sweet though. Probably at least as nice as the Best Buy steelbook for almost $10 less
Great review Adam.
I try and keep up with the release calendar but this one I must have missed hearing about. Was pleasantly surprised when I found it in stores I wasnt expecting a 4K around the same time of the release of Way of Water.
My biggest grip is the packaging.
On the spine its just the Avatar Logo (same for Way of Water 4K and Blu ray.)
Now Avatar has a white background on the spine with the Avatar Logo and Way of Water has a blue background with the Avatar logo.
I can differentiate them but not having the title one the spine and just to logo on both releases is kind of stupid.
These Avatar films are not what you would call HDR demos. Their overall peak brightness levels are not much more than SDR. It's just in the grading tonality, 10 bit video, and P3 color space that make it more contrasty. Disney also failed to utilize the BD-100 disc space very well and both films have fairly low average bitrates and the file sizes are not that much more than a BD-66 on average. The Dolby Atmos mixes are also basic. Yes, there are a few scattered moments of 3D object usage, but for the most part they are static 7.1.4 tracks with mostly music fill pulled into the overheads. The bass has been rolled off at about 30 Hz, so if you have good subs, they won't get much of a workout.
your comments are incoherent. Don't know if you're talking about the 2D or 3D version you skip around...
@@virtualpilgrim8645 I really have no idea what YOU are saying. Is English not your native tongue?
I have to admit I don't buy movies as much as I used to. I only buy movies if I thoroughly enjoy the film and can see myself rewatching it otherwise I'll just stream it.
I did a direct A-B comparison between the disc HDR10 version (Panasonic UB-9000 feeding a Sony A95K fully calibrated QD-OLED) and the Dolby Vision version on Movies Anywhere. They are actually pretty close with the DV image being a bit more lively due to increased contrast. Since Avatar 1 was up-scaled from a remastered 2K intermediate, the results are not surprising.
I havent made a comparison but I can undoubtedly say that watching the 4K disc, it pretty much doesn't need DV at all. The colors and contrasts are outstanding for nearly every frame (on my LG C2) and it looks incredible. Definitely an A+ demo disc for the visuals so anyone taking a stand in demanding it have DV is just limiting themselves. It isn't missed at all here
@@ChrisratataFor most it doesn't matter and, as I said, there isn't much difference between the two versions. I just prefer a bit more contrast. On the other hand, Avatar Way of Water would have benefited from a Dolby Vision encode.
@@MrNorcal81 on my OLED, there was plenty of contrast...the blacks were deep as hell to make everything pop while at the same time having the detail in the shadows where necessary.
I enjoy the movie and the special effects. The story was way better than the 2nd movie IMHO.
I agree. I love Avatar for the pure imagination and technical filmmaking of it. I do like Way of Water, but it does lack something the first had. And the next film is supposed to have fire Navi what the hell😂😂, but never bet against Cameron.
Thank you for this great review Adam! 😊
I didn't realize the 4k was theatrical only. That's a bummer. I will always choose the extended/directors cut given the chance.
Don't know what you're listening to this on but it's another typical Disney Atmouse audio track.
Thanks!
When is the 3D review for Avatar 2 dropping?
I’m not doing one, sorry.
@@MovieGuy365 How come? You weren't able to get a copy?
I am Not really a Fan of Avatar that very much, but I might give this movie another chance though 🤔
It’s unbelievably that avatar from 2009 is so much better than Flash 2023. Kind of sucks they didn’t include the extended version. I hate the stack disc case also.
As great as it may look and sound, I'm content with my 3D Blu-ray for both this and The Way of Water. I just feel like you lose so much watching Avatar in 2D that the increased resolution and HDR aren't worth it at the end of the day.
I agree. The digital smoothing sucks too. However the 4K has an added little scene so it isn't theatrical either.
I'm not gonna go back to 3D until they release good new 3D TV's with good passive 3D, along with 4K 3D blu-rays. I hate having to wear glasses and I hate it even more that they dim the brightness down a lot as well.
@@thenonexistinghero what was wrong with passive 3Dtv they sold before? I have a vizio 3DTV that will work for many years to come. Projectors are fine as well.
@@humphreybogart6663 Because they required glasses which are both uncomfortable to wear and darken the image significantly. And they're low resolution, 1080p at best since no one's making them anymore.
They need to make 3D TV's that don't require glasses. It was just too expensive in the era where 3D TV's were popular. Doesn't matter that 'it works', I'm not willing to step down back to 1080p movies. I'm also not willing to use a significant amount of extra space to make room for a second TV. Projectors are fine? Not if you care about good image quality.
This is a "bad" version, it is impossible to rip a 4k bluray in 4k quality, "removing the audios" if you rip the bluray, it is a 50 gigabyte movie, as is it possible for a 3 hour movie in uhd(4k) It only occupies 50 gigabytes, when that is the size of any 2-hour 4k movie. ".. they should have done it like BLURAY 3D split it into 2 discs and of higher quality. But of course 2 blurays of 100 gigabytes would be more expensive for the distribution
Big bummer it doesn't include the far superior extended cut. Once you watch the extended cut the theatrical version simply becomes unwatchable.
The theatrical version has better pacing and most of the new scenes don't add much to the story.
I completely disagree. The extra scenes in the extended cut add further narrative heft and actually make the stakes even higher for believing what is going through Jake's mind. It's a superior film all throughout.@@virgogaming6488
I’ve got this ordered but I honestly doubt even with 4k that it will top the 3D version although that’s now limited to older flat panels and projectors. I’m very happy the new Way of Water movie is also available in 3D although Cameron likely had to threaten Disney to include it. So sad to see 3D fading away…..
Avatar is out that’s great 👍👍now were are the rest of them: Alien collection, Titanic, True Lies, etc. Or is James Cameron going to wimp out on us.
Hi Adam great review, thank you! I'm still considering to get the 4k or the 3D version.
First Avatar is a great movie.
I'm sorry, special and optical effects no longer impress me. They can do almost anything now with CGI. And the story, like you pointed out, is so derivative. All I can say about this is movie is that it's mediocre. I am glad I saw it once; but I have no desire whatsoever to see it again and I absolutely will not buy it.
I haven't visited this movie since its first release way back. l watched Avatar 2 last week. It's a poorer movie over the first. Jim Cameron seems to focus on effects than the stories now
CGI in this movie was at least 15 years ahead. Still way better than any Marvel, DC CGI etc. One of the best adventure movies ever.
Why not grade the picture a A+ ?
I've watched Avatar tonight on 4k Ultra HD and it looks and sounds super spectacular on Dolby Atmos on my floor speakers 🔊 👊👊📽
I hear DISNEY is not even going to make any more 4K physical discs... 😪
The only exception they'll make is the James Cam'ron Movies... 🎬
Disney's classic Cinderella got a 4k restoration it is going wide on 4k disc this August. Snow White is later this year. However, for the most part, Disney is very slow to release movies and almost no Disney or Fox live action catalog titles.
Reseña incompleta, vídeo se mueve a 50 fps o no, porqué sí no lo hace qué se joda y me quedo con mí edición de coleccionista pasada..
Craptastic release.. NO DV.. subpar audio
I have tried to watch this movie a few times. Cant get past a few minutes. Same with the new one. I will never be able to watch these movies, as they are dull. Blue people are just dull. Good video though.
No DC, no thanks.
Avatar is one of the most OVERRATED movies of all time. Aside from the stunning CG effects, the movie is plain, lame, unoriginal, and BORING for the most part. 😒👎🏻
Love your videos but wish you'd talk more off the cuff versus scripted. Also, are you going to review the new Avatar on 4k?
Just by my own nature, when I talk off the cuff I tend to repeat myself. Writing my thoughts out makes for a better video, trust me. Yes I’ll be review the way of water tomorrow.
