Never played the original Tomb Raider games but growing up I had always heard about it and had some friends who liked it. I decided to jump in for the first time with these remasters and I am having so much fun! The tank controls were a bit of a learning curve but after some time with them I am really enjoying them and the way this plays. The games have so much charm and feel like timeless classics, even coming in new. They are just really special and I am now finally big fan of TR after all these years! Definitely buy this!
@@binho2224They’re very difficult to get to do certain moves and it’s a common complaint. People think it’ll be addressed in a patch but it’s sad it has to be.
@@xKawaiiKittenx I hope they don't change a single bit. It works so well without breaking anything that makes these classics great. I just finished TR1 without a single issue. If having to press or hold an extra button make things so hard, I don't know what to say.
My tomb raider childhood was very mixed. I was born in 2002. So i do jave some memories of playing the older games because i was into very retro games as a kid. But as a teenager it aas the reboots. So i may get this to relive some memories (wish it was a physical release though)
Great video Jay even though I never buy the original tomb raider games either I can’t wait to play these games but I wish a physical version of these games were released too
Great video man crystal dynamics hate classic Lara! Just look at Melonie Mac she hates crystal dynamics!I bought this game so we can see remasters of 4 and 5!
Yeah I saw that situation with the disclaimer at the beginning. I just rolled my eyes when I saw it. I like the idea that anyone was somehow harmed playing the PS1 version.
As someone who played the 3 first TR games, i had alot of fun with this remaster so far, didn' take me long to get into the old tank controls either, haven't even tried the "modern" "controls" yet, and by the sound of it, i dont think i will.
I don't have the nostalgia either. The only Tomb Raider games I have played are The Guardian of Light/Temple of Osiris duology and those are great but very different. I was always aware of Lara Croft but never played them growing up. I have only played this remaster a little but can already tell its something special. It just feels very unique to me so far. I felt the same when I played Soul Reaver in 2022, I could just tell it was something special and Tomb Raider is the same feeling for me.
Honestly I would have paid $60 for just the first three games ported to modern consoles even without the remastered graphics. The game is as affordable as possible. Also I'm glad they didn't change a thing - I would have been disappointed had they added a bunch of features because that would no longer be the classic games. The remaster gets an A+ from me.
Considering it has 3 games + 3 smaller expansion games that - in addition to having 60 fps in high def while being 30 bucks instead of 60 like GTA trilogy, yes it's worth it! Plus the photo mode enables you to fly around and figure out what to do or find secrets. That being said, Tomb Raider 3 is brutally difficult, unfair, and unforgiving, and unpredictable. I grew up with TR 4 Last Revelation and my Uncle gave me the original trilogy. Hope Last Revelation gets remastered too. My favorite game is probably Resident Evil 4 and Skyrim. Also like Pokemon Soulsilver a lot.
Loved the games. I played TR2 on my first PC for weeks. Very frustrating at times but so rewarding. Games nowadays are too easy. It was something else, at the times. But hey: that was almost 30 years ago. Great review.
I’m old enough to remember the original Tomb Raiders, but I was spoiled by 3D platformers and their tighter controls at the time. I had the same problem with the Resident Evil series. Like you, Jay, I jumped in with Legend, then Anniversary then Underworld, and it was there I developed more of an appreciation for Lara Croft. As for my favourite game of all time, it’s Super Mario Galaxy followed by Ocarina of Time.
My favorite game... I've played just about every triple A game on consoles over the last 20 years, Honestly it comes down to L.A. Noir by Rockstar, or God Of War 2018.... Those 2 are absolute Bangers in gaming📌🔥🔥
My favorite video game would have to be RDR2 this game is iconic. I love the scenery, the animals, the clothes people are wearing, the story . The characters John Marston, Arthur Morgan, Dutch vanderlin, Sally. Charles. The Bastard Micah & the rest of the gang. This game is completely a blast. I hope we get a new RDR game maybe it could be about the Mafia. Thanks for the vid Jay & Jill.
Definitely. These games are classics. Lost count of the times I've played these 3 wonderful games. I don't think I'll ever change from the old Tank Controls , but it's lovely to see a fresh coat of paint and some great trophies. Money well spent. Bring on the Physical. Steve 👍
@@DegenerateJayI also played them as a kid, mostly the first 2 games, it was really difficult as a kid, I don't remember ever finishing them and playing them now feels so much easier, I finished the first 2 games already, now I'm playing the 3rd one. About the controls, I actually don't really mind the modern controls, I was pleasantly surprised with them. I can play the game fine in both the tank or modern controls and I actually prefer the modern controls now, once you master them it's so fun and all the jumps and movements come naturally now
Gamers often criticize games that were not part of their childhood. I've noticed that people tend to criticize something that was not part of their memory, regardless of whether it was good or bad.
By far the worst thing is the camera it is really bad sometimes especially in corners and small spaces sometimes it when you couldnt see it was literally a gamble to see if you would make the jump or not
See, I have disability issues (mostly hand-eye co-ordination, but often hand cramping/pain) and I find the tank controls far, far easier than anything on modern games. The idea of using WASD for movement is just impossible for me! I think a lot of it is muscle memory, and how you learn to play. Whichever you start with, switching to the other is often a nightmare.
Yeah it also totally depends on who you are and what effects you. So I play this game on console, but I have a PC that I used to edit and it is a gaming PC, and I find that playing games on keyboard really bothers my hands way faster. Same with using a mouse. But then any game on PC I can use a controller for is already a step up. But I've heard people say the opposite too. It probably just depends on the specific issue, because mine is like a fibromyalgia mixed with a rare thing called erythromyalgia and it affects my muscles and nerves. I'm glad you found a way to play the game that's more comfortable for you! I found that the tank controls are more precise anyway and honestly easier to use than trying to switch to modern.
@@DegenerateJay I’m sorry to hear you have fibromyalgia, I have it too and it can be horrible at times. 😔 I think that’s part of my problem, but I’m also Autistic and have trouble with spatial awareness sometimes - if I can keep my fingers on the cluster of keys and just press and release, I’m okay, but trying to remember where lots of others are and which fingers to stretch becomes a nightmare pretty quickly! I’ve toyed with the idea of getting a controller for other (non tank-control) games, but wasn’t sure if I’d be any better off with one in the end. Would you recommend it for someone like me?
Short answer - YES, worth it. I played Tomb Raider Chronicles first as a teen, then I went back playing the old game. This remasterd one, they are so good. Hard games, nostalgia is there sure...but games are good. Even better than new ones, new ones are more about the story, old ones are more about you using your brain and being present and calm when you die. I would say TB is original Souls games....you die a lot. But you learn, and it is so satisfying when you win...and get all pickups and secrets...The feeling after is best.
My fav game is either Red Dead Redemption 2 or The Witcher 3, cant really choose because I love them both so much. Both games have amazing stories, worlds, characters, music etc. They feel like home to me.

Batman Arkham knight or destiny 1 is probably my favorite games. But I have played all uncharted games and not much of the tomb raider games don’t feel as good but might have to try tomb raider
You have fond memories? Worth it Do you wanna try these classic games and see what the fuss is? Worth it It similar to the Spyro remake, worth it if you wanna know what the fuss is.
I think it's absolutely worth buying, without question if you are already a fan of the franchise/character. And especially if you actually grew up playing these games. Or even if you were already grown up and played these games lol Unfortunately I think probably a lot of fans who have only played the reboot trilogy will probably not care for going back to playing these. Not to say that everyone won't, but I would bet there are a decent amount of people who only have exposure to this character through that trilogy, and probably have only ever played games that conform to that more modern control scheme and design. For me though, I think the original Tomb Raider is straight up timeless. All of the other sequels have improvements but also have more noticeable flaws in my opinion. They're a lot more combat heavy and combat is not this game. But the original game has a simplicity and very meticulate level design that works awesome. And the tank controls can be a bit jarring to get used to, but they work with the precision that this game requires. If you kind of imagine everything as a grid you get a better idea for what kind of jumps will get you to each different platform. As for the car accident, I hope it wasn't too major. I totaled my car a year ago in two head-on collisions and it was one of the most stressful ordeals in my life
I loved the narrations by Bruce Campbell in the training levels. I also thought the side-plots in that were interesting like going after Vulture in the tower.
11:30 Yeah Sony has been weird with trophies lately, they allow thousands of shovelware trash games to flood the store for easy platinums but have a fit with real games having platinums. Recently PushSquare announced a new Sony policy change related to trophies and platinums on multiple games with one launcher and changes to the points system used to determine what trophy grades are allowed by certain games and they are not consistent. What Remains of Edith Finch has a plat on PS5 but not on PS4 and Uncharted Legacy of Thieves has only one plat on PS5 while it has 2 on PS4, idk why this has become a thing with the PS5 generation. Separate plats for each game should be the norm like it used to be, even in bundled game collections.
I Grew up with the Original Games of Tomb Raider and i can say that the controls & Constant Forced Camera Angles are Bad on this game version, imo this remake isn't worth buying cause it's that bad. Original games are better than the remake unless they fix the forced camera angles and other issues when porting.
I was originally really disappointed with the way the remaster looks. Because in my opinion a remaster should look like what Shadow of the colossus or Crash Bandicoot looks like. I have played the original Lara Croft games as a kid. But my brother got the game and I'm happy to say it meets the bare minimum of what a remaster should include. I like the modern controls and the improvements to the PC versions. Very happy with that. But it could've been done better. I've seen better remasters
Crash is actually a remake (but a faithful one) because they coded the game again from the ground up. This one uses the same engine. I think it is awesome as a preservation effort. A tomb raider remake would be Tomb Raider Anniversary.
It is difficult to do that because of the grid based gameplay. It requires that the scenery be blocky looking, but then coating everything else in 2024 graphics would make that look jarring. Anniversary is the remake but it's nowhere near as good.
