  • The General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon is a single-engine multirole fighter aircraft originally developed by General Dynamics for the United States Air Force (USAF). Designed as an air superiority day fighter, it evolved into a successful all-weather multirole aircraft. Over 4,600 aircraft have been built since production was approved in 1976. Although no longer being purchased by the U.S. Air Force, improved versions are being built for export customers. In 1993, General Dynamics sold its aircraft manufacturing business to the Lockheed Corporation, which in turn became part of Lockheed Martin after a 1995 merger with Martin Marietta.
The Fighting Falcon's key features include a frameless bubble canopy for good visibility, side-mounted control stick to ease control while maneuvering, an ejection seat reclined 30 degrees from vertical to reduce the effect of g-forces on the pilot, and the first use of a relaxed static stability/fly-by-wire flight control system that helps to make it an agile aircraft. The F-16 has an internal M61 Vulcan cannon and 11 locations for mounting weapons and other mission equipment. The F-16's official name is "Fighting Falcon", but "Viper" is commonly used by its pilots and crews, because of a perceived resemblance to a viper snake as well as to the fictional Colonial Viper starfighter from the television program Battlestar Galactica which aired at the time the F-16 entered service.
In addition to active duty in the U.S. Air Force, Air Force Reserve Command, and Air National Guard units, the aircraft is also used by the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds aerial demonstration team, and as an adversary/aggressor aircraft by the United States Navy. The F-16 has also been procured to serve in the air forces of 25 other nations. As of 2015, it was the world's most numerous fixed-wing aircraft in military service.

Also one of the best air display jets at any show. Once watched a Dutch example, at Mildenhall air show, lift off and go ballistic until out of sight in a clear blue sky. Then he reappeared in a flat spin which he sustained down to less than a thousand feet before recovering and immediately entering a tight 360 turn within the airfield perimeter. I thought he was a goner for sure but it was breathtaking to watch. 😮

People say that, but then there are others who claim they never heard it called that during their service. Its my belief that "Viper" was a name a small number of USAF personnel used (the guys who came up with the name and the people they shared it with) and most people called the Falcon. But as the internet became prominent, the story of the Viper nickname started spreading and now there's this perception that everyone calls it that.

Still my favorite fighter of all time. I really love how much these are pushed to their limits and keep taking the abuse. They are loaded down to the brim with fuel and munitions to the point where they NEED afterburner just to take off. And let's not forget the famed 9g turn ability. A squadron of F16s with B1 bombers is my dream team. And as much as the name 'Viper' sounds cool, it will always be the Fighting Falcon to me. Great video!

If you don't mind, I'll copy my comment on this one too.
The F-16V Viper is still an excellent all-around fighter and despite all the propaganda about the F-35 which is supposedly replacing the Viper my studies about the F-35 leaves me worried about the direction the USAF is taking. I hear a lot of the same arguments that were used back in the '50s and '60s, "we don't need a high-speed dogfighter anymore." Just add "Stealth is now the Holy Grail" and that's not what it's going to take for air superiority. The damn thing can hardly go supersonic because the engine overheats and within a few seconds have to cut the AB. It's constantly being grounded and put back in the air on another waiver. Not exactly a confidence builder, I would rather have a proven F-16V generation 4.5 fighter than a 5th generation fighter that has a 20-year history of unreliability. I have many other issues with the F-35 and like the Mustang was the best prop fighter there is, in my opinion the Viper is still King.

@@osamabagdadi5789 The V (Block 70-72) variant is not being built for the USAF, Guard or Reserve. It is an export only aircraft. Besides the maintenance issue is the fact that General Dynamics wants to sell the more expensive F-35 rather than the Viper.

@@tbolt2948 oh true, I mean isn't the airforce buying more F15EX? I think the idea might be that F35 will be used in mission that require stealth such as beginning of an airwar before enemy radars and Sams are neutralized and F15EX can do all the dogfighting. Either way, Su30Sm and Su35 are far more maneuverable and could probably beat the F15Ex. F35 stealth and long range capabilities might be the only advantage for USAF in that case.

Do you have any videos that are just information about the topic, and not ramblings about historical stupidities ? You know, a focused topic video ?

It’s time to train Ukraine’s pilots and maintenance crews on the F-16. Then donate some F-16s to Ukraine.

Do some extra research, There is an F-16 training facility built in Romania, so that NATO countries can train their airforce pilots somewhere and have that training standardized across NATO. This is current in 2023, so that tells me that the F-16 is not going to be phased out anytime soon in Europe.
