Why was he in jail when he was murdered?

It was for destroying a printing press in Nauvoo. There are some really good books about it. Let me know if you are interested.

@@fheontheroad On June 6, 1843, Smith was indicted by a grand jury in the circuit court of Daviess County, Missouri, on the charge of treason against the state.

I also recommend reading up more on why to know for yourself, but I also do feel like a bit more could be said. In 1844, Joseph had enemies both in the church and out of the church as well. There are several well argued reasons for this, the growing talk of the practice of polygamy by several members, Joseph's statements and actions that many felt was unbecoming of a prophet of God, the excommunication of church members who didn't get summoned to defend themselves at their hearings, just to name a few. Some of those who were booted from the church for apostasy, created a newspaper called the Nauvoo Expositor, which was greatly opposed to and highly critical of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and its leaders. Fearing the Expositor was promoting libel, and that it would stir up mobs again, something that had gotten the Latter-Day Saints kicked out of several states already and was brewing in that part of Illinois too. The Nauvoo City Council and Joseph Smith agreed the best move was to destroy the press, which it was. The destruction of the press still upset people, flared tensions, got the governors attention and eventually Joseph and Hyrum turned themselves in. It was while they were awaiting a trial that a mob surrounded the jail and both were killed.

Drop the Book of Mormon and read the Holy Bible. It is Gods word and Jesus Christ is the centerpiece, the Gospel, the great news! Please don't let this "church" lie to you anymore about God and Christ and the afterlife. If you read the Bible, you won't find Joseph Smith, or becoming a god or having to do good deeds to win your way into heaven. You will find a Savior that while on the cross said " IT IS FINISHED" meaning He had done everything necessary for your salvation. You can NEVER be good enough to get to heaven, that is why Jesus paid it all. All that you have to do is repent and put your trust in Christ. Grace doesn't require extra on your part. The Bible is God's own words, handed down for 2000 years and it can be trusted! Don't let Satan blind you or fool you...after all HE is the father of lies. God Bless you all!

We love the Bible and study the Bible! The best thing in the whole world is that God STILL loves us, just like he loved the people in the days of the Bible! He has given us a prophet to follow, just like in the Bible! It is so wonderful! We can never be good enough to get to heaven, only through Jesus Christ!! God loves all his children and we do have The Book of Mormon which goes hand in hand with the Bible, because God didn't only teach His children in Jerusalem but in different parts of the world, these two books go hand in hand, its so wonderful!!
