Well, as I black woman, I thought I could at least go for the low-hanging fruit of "don't burn Atlanta"...you know, given that it's celebrated for being black-owned. But the amount of backlash and disdainful vitriol I got was genuinely surprising. I didn't even dare say don't riot (and i mean riot, not protest). Given the push-back I got, I can't even imagine how scared people who are not black must feel. I highly, highly respect you for taking a steadying breath and posting this podcast.

You were probably shocked you apparently committed such heresy, when you were making an appeal to sense.
@@nicknomski8399 To be honest, I've been butting heads with the gatekeepers of blackness since I came to this country. Back when I was a kid, I was called an oreo because I loved to read and thus knew big words. Was told my black card was cancelled because I didn't watch BET or listen to much rap. Was told I hated my own men because my first crush was an Asian boy. As an adult, I ran into it when I said I don't like the methods of BLM. I could literally go on all day.
I wasn't surprised that I got attacked. I know certain people go after black people who dissent with more fervor. I was surprised that I was attacked for saying don't burn ATALANTA. Atlanta. Where so many things are black owned. What exactly is the goal of the protests when saying don't burn black businesses is met with jeers...from black people?

Not an atheist, not listening to Sam too often, but DAMN this is one of the best speeches I have ever heard in my life!
Hearing somebody apply critical thinking feels so good. I'm old enough to remember when people agreed to disagree and you didn't try to destroy someone because they have a different opinion.
I don't know if you've ever read a history book but socialists, atheists, and gay people might not remember when they were simply left alone while doing their own thing.
Those suckers back then obviously either didn't believe what they said or didn't really care about the topic. Destroying someone with the opposite view demonstrates you do both.
My father and his family fled his home state of Alabama in the late 40s, probably too late to properly call it part of the Great Migration. They were fleeing racial violence, and this was a couple decades after the worst lynching of the 20th century.
My father became a communist, the only reasonable reaction to fleeing violent racism in the south only to experience the politically racist ghettoization of NYC. You could talk to him for years and never suspect that. He was hesitant to tell his own children, never explained his beliefs to his wife. Why? Because he never lived in an America where people just agreed to disagree over controversial opinions.
You remember a more calm and peaceful world because you were sheltered. All around you people were being oppressed and killed by people for their beliefs or just for existing. The motivations for their subjugation were things you're coddled enough to consider differences of opinion. The people who suffered you considered so less than you forgot they existed. Maybe you never even knew they did.
Your bubble has been popped. Your safe space is gone. History is on the march. Your illusory, peaceful America has been unmasked as an illusion, and the screams of the dregs of society will deafen you until you die.
Sorry for the inconvenience, lib.

people who can't control their emotions, often want to control other people's behaviour.
Can we really control our emotions? I am not arguing. I think that is an interesting idea to discuss.
@@frenchfrog70 I think we can.
This is only my thought process... Take it for what it is. I believe that our emotions are manifestations of something deeper within that we are not yet conscious of. I think it is the notion of control that disturbs me. At the same time I do believe that we can influence our emotions or at least the manifestations of them by introspection and mindfulness. Why do we have emotions to start with?
I also think that the illusion of control might be the best way to not have any control.
@@frenchfrog70 not really interesting if you start meditation and answer this question with a resounding YES YOU CAN and its the best thing i learned to improve my life. You cant control the rise of emotion but you can control how long the emotion lasts by learning to feel it deeply and then let it subside on its own, its the difference between 1 hour of anger to literally seconds of anger. Once you realize all the things you tell yourself the stories, the fictive scenarios that would make you angry, sad, depressed or anything in between are mostly ways to prolong a specific feeling and that its just not worth it you start to develop a habit of letting go of bad emotions and amplifying good emotions with the self talk of how amazing the world is or something. If you are aware of your anger you cease to be angry. Try the waking up App from sam its a godsend. You can be more yourself because you dont let emotions control your narrative that your tell yourself. If some things dont make sense just try it out you will soon see how much control you have over your inner state, it honestly blew me away and there ist near infinite possiblity for growth in that domain, it really is a ocean inside you that you never noticed is there its fucking amazing

So brilliant, but so obvious on reflection.
I’ve tried to explain these things and got death threats, lost friends and had my family begging me not to keep disagreeing with the narrative. I cannot believe that reason....being rational in public...is now an act of courage. But I see this podcast as an act of courage.
It's also dangerous to the person speaking it.
The democrats have completely failed the working class in the US. They are the worst performing left party in the western world. No public health care, low minimum wage, no annual leave, no sick pay, no permanent unemployment benefits etc. The US has NONE of the entitlements all other western countries take for granted. It was Democrat failures that lead to the era of identity politics to keep themselves relevant and to get votes from women and minorities.
Is it surprising really?
Many people aren't swayed by reason. Do you think cancel culture is an act of reason? Do you think rioting is an act of reason?
No, they are acts of emotion and you can never win an argument based on emotion with reason. This is why you can't have a conversation with people that are charged with emotion, you can't win and you will only be a new enemy to them for not agreeing.
This is why it's clear we are over the brink in the US, the only end will be a violent uprising or authoritarianism oppression.
that’s what it was like to live in medieval europe. The ony sane man in all of europe is the one who’s suddenly realized he is surrounded by madmen as he is burned alive for witchcraft
There was lots of sense spoken here about policing, but it was not courageous. It's frustrating that Sam completely omits what is surely one of the most (if not the most) important factors in the general underperformance of the group in question, that is low average IQ. There's a lot of big talk here about having "honest conversations" about "relevant causal factors" but he seems so fixated on achieving his race-blind rainbow utopia, that he wants to not deny, but simply avoid reality: that the different performance of groups is because the groups are actually different. There is an incredibly well established link between intelligence and criminality (regardless of race), and the fact that Sam will bring up the legacy of slavery before he will mention IQ differences as a causal factor is very telling.
Three years ago he had Charles Murray on and talked frankly about this subject but even in that episode Sam acted as though the only relevance of the science was merely of academic interest and that it was better if the public at large don't know about it. Well what we're dealing with now is what happens when everyone in society has the expectation that every group should be performing equally well, and because the biological reason behind it has been hidden, they are left to conclude that it must be "structural", "institutional", or "systemic" racism. "Courageous" would have been talking about the causal factors that are extremely consequential but taboo, not trotting out the usual CNN talking points of "legacy of slavery".
I know this is a tough subject for Sam to speak about... but as a Black man in America 🇺🇸 I just want to say thank you Sam!
As a blond man, I also thank Sam ;)
Im a fan of Sam but he's tone deaf on this one. There is a big problem with policing in this country, it's easier to become a police man then it is to become a barber, which takes over twice as long with twice as much training. It's so easy to become one, many departments are believed to be full of white supremacists. Sam needs to understand this is a hugely systemic problem, and why are there protests, because some of these murders of innocent people of color are absolutely egregious borderlining on cold blooded and at time calculated murder
@@Elcherino123 Hi. Your points are police are under trained and there is a belief that there is a white supremacist presence in the police force. For the first, you and Sam seem to agree entirely. And I think the obvious answer is more and better training. For the second, I think you again agree entirely that there is no room for white supremacy in the police force and there needs to be serious, rational discussion on how to address this and other issues.
Yo Bo
So would defunding police aid or impair better police training? 🤔
There is a problem with policing, and with race and policing. To say it's only a racial issue, and that it is pervasive and defines every facet of policing is not supported by any evidence.
I honestly believe law enforcement is the least understood profession in the country, and yet everyone claims to be an expert on it. We already ask too much from our officers, and yet some want them to be social justice and race relations experts. It's a difficult job with too many incapable or underqualified people. but the requirements are too high partially because people have impossible expectations.
I wish the general public even had the patience to hear this message...

Thank you for being the voice of sensibility and reason. Your treatment of arguments is very fair and even handed. We need more voices like yours to be amplified.
Sam Harris needs to be given the opportunity to give this message to Congress so it can be part of the nation's government transcripts.
What would be very helpful would be if all the media outlets spent a few moments giving actual race/crime statistics and for those who don't do straightforward math, show videos of white people being treated roughly by police such as the Tony Timba video.
The government doesn't want the conversation to shift towards inequality of opportunity. That's a much harder problem to solve and a problem that they don't want to solve.
I really wish more people in government listened to Sam Harris. There are too many people on both sides of the aisle who aren’t willing to be reasonable and examine the nuance of everything that is happening. Zealotry of any kind helps no one.

"can you believe they platformed sam harris in congress? just shows you how much systematic racism exists to platform a white supremacist like sam harris"
Thank you, Sam. This made me cry. Because no one has guts to speak truth anymore. What we desperately need is adults in the room and all the people who supposed to provide leadership are either incompetent, misguided, or completely relinquished their duty and taking an easy path of conforming. No the Liberals who believe America is an idea and this was going to pass are the ones who can't get the egg off their face.

You wanna disagree with Trump and vote for someone else in November, fine. But an 'existential threat to Democracy'? Come on. That's ludicrous. I definitely agree with most of this, but Sam's got a terrible case of Trump Derangement Syndrome that really puts a lot of rational people off.

The hardest part of this conversation, for me, is that I find the person I am talking to locked into a binary way of thought. If you think this, then you are on that side. If you think that, then you are on the other, and if you express thoughts that reflect views from one percieved side or another, then I'm often told I am confused. Absolutely. They censor a Trump tweet, saying it glorified violence, while they left tweets up during the riots that openly encouraged and organized them.
Since Facebook and Twitter selectively enforces their TOS (you don’t need to violate the TOS to get suspended) and decides to censor one political viewpoint over another, they should be declared publishers and made to be held responsible for anything that appears on their sites.
Mainstream Media even more so...
Humans are not ready for social media yet. That is the truth
@@richardpowell1772 Your comment is illustrative of the problem. That tweet you are referring to wasn't CENSORED! Nudity and profanity are censored on broadcast tv. The tweet you are referring to wasn't censored whatsoever. It is still on Twitter for those who want to find it (Unless cadet bone spurs deleted it). What Twitter did do was tag that particular tweet, not censor it.
The sad thing is that if you choose to reply, my money would be on you doubling down on your incorrect statement, not to admit that your understanding of that particular situation was completely wrong. Twitter is absolutely aids. I think if that site went away, most of the bs would disappear over night
Totally agree the problem started when CNN started reading tweets on air and papers started making stories on what they read on social media, then it turned into activist journalism. I honestly think social media has potential but we are not ready as a species for that, I can already see it from what young people post.. It has become a place of bullying and attention "whoring" lack of a better word ... Problem is what with social media we get to interact with people like Sam.

As a black living in the US, I think that this episode was very valuable. The people that do not agree with this (Black or White), are people that chose to follow their emotions over reasons. It is sad, but the more people are doing that, the more the USA is in danger of plunging into civil war. I hope that more African Americans would watch this (even outdated as it is) and think more seriously about the proper way of building a less racist society.

Please do not feel alone. I have hope that more people are willing to think on the matter and actually discuss, than there are people who don't. It is absolutely mind-boggling to see people in the comments who will listen to an entire podcast like this and agree with virtually all of it until it comes to the part where he criticizes Trump. That's the true power of being in a cult.
That's called a fallacy of composition (Parts-Whole Fallacy) Samuel. He can be entirely correct on many issues and be completely incompetent and blinded on other issues, which Sam is.
Which issues, Jesus and Trump? Honest question.
@@SamuelSwaggerStep I'm a 'Classical Conservative' but I've listened to a variety of opposing dispositions for years, including Sam Harris. I like Sam on a handful of issues but he isn't infallible by any means.
Sam Harris' biggest flaw is that he holds to a worldview of philosophical empiricism but constantly appeals to non-empirical metaphysical objects that make his philosophical paradigm of empiricism, ultimately, incoherenttt. He has no consistent justification for any of the immaterial, metaphysical preconditions for intelligibility such as laws of logic, objective morality, identity given to organisms across time, the principle of induction, etc. He also falls time and time again into the 'deterministic fallacy' and it appears he hasn't read a list of formal/informal fallacies in years. In other words, Sam's philosophy of life is a self-refuting automation machine. Sam wouldn't last 10 minutes against an actual trained philosopher of science.
There are many more issues I could raise (Politics, Sociological standards, etc) that Sam isn't cogent on but I'll leave it there for now.
@@squidwardtennisballs3390 Harris isn't making an argument in this podcast on any one specific issue, there is a lot of information covered here and I'm not saying that just because he is right on certain points he's right on all of them, and I'm not saying that he's right about Trump because he is right about any other number of issues. I appreciate the parts-whole fallacy. I think it's a completely valid observation that the only push-back you ever see in the comments are on his views on Trump. People aren't here, particularly on this podcast, arguing about his philosophical paradigm of empiricism, they are here to express their contempt over his criticism of Trump. It's just something I noticed, but I wouldn't recommend anyone spend a great deal of time reading through other peoples' comments here.
Can you think of a trained philosopher of science who is accessible online or other podcasters even who you more align with? I would be happy to check them out.

Yep, for now, this podcast/video is the most important thing out there. UNTIL Sam tells us the truth about BLM and Antifa and their hidden (in plain sight) agenda of old-fashioned revolution. I mean burning of the Constitution, rewriting our history, radical appropriation of wealth, punishment of privileged whites, and coercive political re-education for all. It is more speculative to imagine that this revolutionary regime will engage in mass murder of its enemies on the historical scale of revolutionary France, Nazi Germany, the USSR, and Communist China. But just because I don't speculate that this definitely will happen does not mean that I think it is off the table.

* Technically, I think it helps to have an African-American speak about this stuff ONLY because there are listeners who might be afraid of not detecting dog-whistling when they hear it. But I agree, Sam, that discounting your entire perspective just because of the color of your skin is an ironic form of racism in of itself.
* It's good that you differentiate deadly force by a cop from *unnecessary* and/or *pardoned* use of *any* force by a cop. Even if there was 100:1 ratio of White to Black Americans killed by the cops, that by itself only tells me that the cops need reform. I agree with you on that. But It's the number of suspiciously unarmed, noncriminal, etc., Black suspects that make it feel unsafe for me. It's not that the cop is the racist or a horrible person; it's what *happens* to the cop afterward.

if anyone is so ideological that you cannot have a conversation with them, it’s Chomsky.
It’s clear as day through Sam reaching out to Chomsky and Chomsky’s subsequent refusals to have a dialogue, that Chomsky is an Ideologue whom’s usefulness has expired
@Joseph McCarthy
A neocon is someone who thinks liberalism (the idea that built the west) is so important to preserve and that coexistence with fascistic regimes or significant populations holding such beliefs, that we ultimately have to spread western values to the edges of the earth. By peaceful means or violence. Whatever is necessary.
I don’t think you understand the neocon worldview. We are just highly militaristic Liberals of the combined English and French Traditions.
This can’t be summarized in a 140 character tweet and that is why society is devolving
This is why Twitter expanded the limit to 280 characters now, so that society would devolve twice as slowly than it otherwise would.
As a non-American that sometimes follows American politics, at 48:41 i truly thought the answer would be about 10,000. Goes to show you how effective the media is to the casual observer.
They were protesting here in Canada, we had 450 in 17 years. Ppl have no clue what's actually going on.
I listened to this today at work, and man everybody needs to hear this.. EVERYONE!
Doug G ~ Yeah,
i think that it’s very important that the public gets both sides of the debate and the other side of the propaganda.

I'm always surprised when I learn that some people still watch news programs. Or TV at all for that matter.
He gets to the critical point at 53:25, and he's made it before. Most people don't understand the sudden nature of violence and the need for primal self-preservation. Until a literal robocop is invented, resisting arrest and suicide-by-cop will be very similar because cops don't want to die! Ascribing racism to urgent fight or flight situations is completely dishonest, and done by people of mediocre intellect (not Sam).
Why?
im sorry your comment doesnt compliment sam. that comment is a recognition of self ignorance. think about it.. you are giving more honor to sam when he made it clear he is not really saying anything in the first 10 mins.. and you feel he has said more than the news in the last 3 weeks? am I crazy or is the world going crazy with me.. or are your approximations of reality is incomplete; another aspect we need to ratify. what you have seen in the news. is unfathomable period period period. im on the 4th time around listening to this lecture how many times have you listened to it.. do you honestly think you have the capacity to grasp the entire lecture in one sitting? im looking at my vocab list which has about 15 words i need to look up to better understand a few sentences. how many vocab words did you write down to better understand this?
too many intellectuals have disappeared when the shit hit the fan--not Sam...so much respect for this---this is what we need more of in this life
How do we build a city for people that listen to this podcast?
Man, that sounds like utopia! A society of open-minded, thoughtful people, having civil discourse based on reason and treating each other respectfully? Count me in!
Everyone thinks they're open-minded and thoughtful, just like the New Atheists thought they were rational, dispassionate, and objective. The city would have the same problems that any other city has because it would be a city inhabited by humans. It might take a generation to regress to the mean, but it would, nevertheless.

Imagine if CNN/Fox voices spoke the same language as Sam Harris.
Tucker often has excellent points.
Then you'd have found the perfect drug.
His message is virtually identical to Tucker Carlson's. Tucker has been giving one of the most sane takes on this from the beginning.
@@hekskey
But Tucker doesn't put on an "intellectual" voice.
hekskey I’ll check out Tucker Carlson 👍
Sam, thank you for being the most lucid voice of reason in these tumultuous times. It's like society as a whole has completely lost its plot. It is beyond me how anyone could possibly downvote this.
The downvotes could be from people who have long-standing issues with Harris on any of a range of topics (such as his views on the problems with Islam), not necessarily the topic at hand. Although beliefs across a range of issues tend to come as a package deal.
Wow, I just discovered this channel. This is amazing! So much content!!!!!
My mind is blowing up trying to figure out how I'm going to watch this all!!!
