  • Today we're taking a look into a project I did a few years ago and doing a 5 year update. This is testing the Hybrid Supercapacitor Car Battery still in it's original setup, nothing replaced.
    Unfortunately the manufacturer of these specific supercapacitors went out of business, but any comparable spec'd supercaps will have the same positive result. The Dakota Lithium 10AH 12V battery is still running strong after 5 years of use in an automotive engine bay.

    I just watched all 10 parts and was wondering what if you have an issue with the car and it doesn't start right away? Maybe you or a mechanic are diagnosing a no start situation and need to crank it for an extended time.

    ...really a nice and interesting job, I wonder if can also be done for 12v motorbikes, if possible can you tell me how many caps I can put in series, voltage and farad. Resistance if I read correctly, use only if accompanied by lipefo4

    What about using like smaller capacitor bank just enough for car starting, and larger cap bank for slowly charging it with voltage booster when it drops below critical or just before u start a car, to use whole range of it, not only 14-10V.

      @@edoardobattaglia5157 That is what the small LiFePO4 battery is for...just to keep the volts up in a car that is sitting...to maintain the charge of the supercaps...the supercaps dump HUNDREDS of amps into the starter EVERY TIME rather than getting weaker and weaker and almost non existant when stupid cold...a lead acid battery at 7 would propably have like 1/4 of it's CCA...the supercap batteries have NO problems

    • @ericmollison2760
      @ericmollison2760 Год назад

      Hayden is right. A resistor is pointless. The battery insofar as it is not perfect is like a resistor in itself. The supercaps would actually somewhat stabilize the voltage and if anything protect the battery. The battery wouldn't have to take a heavy load. I don't know what the specifics of your plan are given there is limited space under the hood, but if you can that's great. I have a history of replacing car batteries and they lose almost all capacity in a year. Maybe I'm going for bad bargains? So I was thinking of experimenting with small rechargeable batteries of some kind because I realized I don't need Ah (amp-hours), just Amps. Leakage current is a thing in most cars though. Something like 20mA. So a series of say 10 or 12 NiMH AA batteries (1500mAh) would last... 3 days. I guess I need better than that.

    • @edoardobattaglia5157
      @edoardobattaglia5157 Год назад

      @@ericmollison2760 ok, I have a fiat punto evo with a 1.3mjt, it originally had a smaller battery but since the 70ah battery fit I put that one in, but I thought that as soon as it leaves me I could get a smaller one again (50 or 60ah) and take the capacitors to put in parallel, there is plenty of space around the battery.

      The supercaps are what's providing the cold cranking amps.

    • @haydenc2742
      @haydenc2742 Год назад

      HUNDREDS of amps being able to be delivered...really spins up the motor fast...get's it started where a cold lead acid battery would barely spin it over

    • @stevewinwood3674
      @stevewinwood3674 Год назад +1

      Capacitors can charge and discharge with very little effect. The available charge cycles compared to batteries is much greater. Theoretically Capacitors have infinite charge cycles, but of course something will always degrade and fail. They have potential for extreme long life however and not temperature dependent like a wet cell battery.

    • @outputcoupler7819
      @outputcoupler7819 Год назад +1

      Honestly? Nothing. People just got excited because the word "super" was in the name, so they forced them into use for lots of things they're bad at. Everyone pointed out how bad an idea supercapacitor car batteries were when people started doing this, but nobody listened.
      And yes, supercapacitors make very bad batteries. There's a very good reason everyone selling supercapacitors for use as car batteries went out of business, and no car manufacturer is using them. Even if supercapacitors last "forever" as some claim (they don't, capacitors fail just like everything else), exactly how much value is there in a battery that lasts forever? $50 a year, maybe? That's going to take a pretty long time to pay itself off.
      If you live in an area where it's so cold that a healthy battery can't reliably crank your car? Then I could see this providing a bit of convenience as compared to a battery heater. But if you've never had a negative opinion about the cold cranking amps of a new lead acid battery, then this will provide you no benefit at all beyond a few dollars a month of hypothetical cost savings if you drive the car 20 years.
