      locoism1025 As long as Netflix enforces a terrible release platform which causes most of their films to all but entirely bypass a theatrical exhibition, there’s plenty to hate on.

    Honestly Alonso and Christy are selling the film short. This isn't a Life of Pi where the film shows us something and then we get narration afterwards to force the message. This uses something akin to Nora Zeale Hurston where the voices of the people telling their own stories is essential to the narrative construction. Something important would be lost if all of the information was told visually and the WTF groups obsessive hatred of voice over narration caused them to miss that.

    Favorite part of the movie was the fact that you find out later, The younger brother thanks his life to the Tuskegee Airmen who came to save their B-25 formation. The fact they noted the Tuskegee Airmen and the 761st Black Panthers was my. "Oh my god that's cool as fuck." moment.
    How the P-51 just slowly flies into frame and you realize.."A Red tail.." And he mentions the 'colored' pilot It was just..Boy. This movie beyond that was so good.

    Racism. Huge part of the film. I know. But there was more floating in there that I think people aren't appreciating as much. What was the war like, how were home coming vets received, foreigners receptions of said vets, advancements (and lack there of) in agriculture, family life, women's daily/life challenges, family dynamics etc - all relating to the time period! Interesting at least. Yes the scenes where the Jackson family was mistreated and brutalized were hard to watch for me... 'Cause I'm lame. But the racism relates to the time period... Sad but true. Unabashed and unblinking portrayal of it. Not for everyone. But it was about more than just the black characters or just the white characters it was about everyone from that time ever. Great time piece.

    • @airuniverse10
      @airuniverse10 4 года назад +1

      Agree! Obviously the overlying issue is racism. But, there are many other social problems that are immersed in this story. Great for discussion. If people change their lens they would see it and feel the emotions of this film. Very well done.

    You can never make a general statement that "voice over" is not good for film because it is a visual medium, this is one of the most understood concepts ever. Voice over when it is used in a lazy fashion especially to convey EMOTIONS is when it is bad. But this story almost REQUIRES voice over since you have about 5 different perspectives, and it grounds you through each new POV - But it NEVER ever uses it to TELL emotion - This movie was extremely emotional yet had voice over - like Goodfellas and Wolf of Walstreet and basically any film director that is highly influenced by FRENCH CINEMA - Amelie, etc - all these films use voice over heavily but as a stylistic choice jus like any other character part of the story.

    Film is a visual medium but I agree with Christy on the *excessive "narration."* When you have to switch perspectives, relying only on visual storytelling might leave the audience confused. I think they deliberately chose *narration* as a device, to convey the story of these amazing characters, which is evident by it's exemplary use towards the climax.

    • @ZeppelinBigFan
      @ZeppelinBigFan 6 лет назад +1

      The (excessive) narration was probably necessary, but I do feel like it was the only thing holding the film back. It didn't ruin the experience for me at all, but I don't think a film can truly be a cinematic masterpiece with so much voiceover if you know what I mean. I'd give it a strong 8/10.

    • @PrateekGole
      @PrateekGole 6 лет назад

      ZeppelinBigFan I'm not a fan of voice-over narration in films either, mostly because it's the easiest (or the laziest) and the least creative way out.
      However, there are some storytellers who have mastered it, especially Terrence Malick. He uses voice-over to tell the inner struggles of a character, rather than mere exposition. It works out, perhaps because his work (too arty for some) mostly explore existentialism, making his films a truly cinematic experience.

      It´s 2017 and I agree that the story is old. but it is also important that we never forget how bad it use to be , and make it clear that we are never going back . Just look at the last 8 months. It is not so old as long as the Alt Right and the KKK exist . The reality is that people like you feel offended when you are reminded of all the things blacks had to put up with.

    • @chelseagalloway6913

      The fact is we still put up with this in a different more menacing form. Focusing on the past in Netflix form is a rouge. It’s a distraction and wasting time when we need to focus on voting, making sure our representatives and the places we invest our money and times truly want our lives to improve and the lives of our children to improve.
      If you truly want to know what we’ve been through read books. Dont watch an entertainment shock value show in a biased filtered and manipulated platform like Netflix whose job is not to educate but to entertain, to make us want to binge watch, and lay down for hours when we should be out in our communities putting in work.
