    While the Lexus tries to be sporty (with some success), the 2015 Edge winds up being the better "Lexus," thanks to a redesign that transforms the car. Normally Toyota does hybrids well, but the hybrid NX300h isn't as fulfilling as the turbocharged NX200t. Viewer feedback ran deep from our annual Top Picks episode, asking about the lack of a sports car pick and our small car choice. Finally, we talk about the possibility of buying a Tesla Model S P85D.

    I appreciate your comments on the new 2015 Edge. We owned an '08 and an '011 Limited. Mechanically, both were very solid vehicles; the '08 was very pleasant to drive but a bit noisy. The '011 drove better and quieter, but I unloaded it after 2.5 years because, despite 4 software updates, MyFordTouch just drove us crazy.
    I would be very interested in a comparison between the 2015 Edge Limited 2.0 Ecoboost and the new 2015 Nissan Murano Platinum. Similar sized, similar priced.

    If you guys weren't paying attention, Lexus has become the new exciting Japanese Luxury brand. Its like it switched places with Acura and even moved ahead of Infiniti. Acura now just makes boring cars like Lexus used to, and Infiniti doesn't quite have the wild attitude it used to have. Lexus is now trying to appeal to the grow'd up JDM crowd, rather than the blue-haired golfer crowd.

    All of you do a great job. The one question I have. Why are the VW Golf vehicles chosen by all of you as personal favorites, when their reliability is always subject? AIl I seem to hear about, is how they fall apart after their warranties expire. Owners also complain about poor dealer service and expensive maintenance and repair costs.

    • @mountainhobo
      @mountainhobo 9 лет назад

      Excellent question. I would love to know the answer. Would any of the CR panelists buy a Golf intending to keep it for 10 years?

    • @gabepettinicchio7454

      I hope they answer. I've always wanted a German car, but ... you know.

    • @mountainhobo
      @mountainhobo 9 лет назад +1

      Gabe Pettinicchio Yes, I do. My friends' horror stories with maintaining their BMWs put me off that brand. However, I do like Golf's form factor and its utility. Still, having owned a bunch of Toyotas in the past, I am spoiled when comes to reliability.

    • @mountainhobo
      @mountainhobo 9 лет назад

      If the panelists decide to answer this question (would you buy and hold and Golf for 10 years), could you please also say which one:
      1.8 T w / stick
      1.8 T w / DSG
      2.0 TDi w / stick
      2.0 TDi w / DSG
      and why that particular one?

    • @gabepettinicchio7454
      @gabepettinicchio7454 9 лет назад +2

      It may be that they don't mind spending the $ to maintain and repair. It's interesting because they are choosing cars that CR does not recommend. Interesting!

    My aunt has an RX and she is an avid traveler, so I often drive her 2013 RX. Even though it's not an F Sport model, the ride is much too stiff for a Lexus. The RX is no longer soft as it used to be, even though I haven't driven the NX, I feel that they both should be pretty similar.

  • @andrewnprice
    @andrewnprice 9 лет назад +2

    I love you guys, but wouldn’t it be more appropriate to compare the NX to the Q3/X1? I understand that in terms of size the NX is much closer to a Q5/X3, but when comparing price points, drive train options, and placement relative to their respective brand hierarchy: it seems to me that the NX is supposed to compete more with those vehicles and not their upper tier cousins. (And for sake of comparison: the RX is also larger than its German equivalents, and is slated to grow even more in size as Lexus makes room for the third row seat in the upcoming refresh.)

    As a previous (dissatisfied) 2011 Ford Edge owner, do you have any answers as to why Ford did not roll out Sync 3 on the 2015 Edge and 2016 Explorer? My dislike throughout my Edge ownership was SOLEY because of MyFord Touch, and I feel like Ford could not get rid of it fast enough. Sync 3 looks so promising, and yet the redesigned and updated 2015 and 2016 Fords continue to use MyFord Touch. Any thoughts? Also, Talking Cars is awesome. You guys are great to listen to and watch. I JUST found out Consumer Reports HAD a RUclips channel, and let me tell you, it is exactly how I imagined it would be. I'm not one of those "HP all day" bros who needs to see the Hellcat do powerslides, but this just a bunch of stodgy mid-management types praising kitchen appliances with wheels. The Legacy better than the Accord? You guys can't believe that. The Golf over the Mazda3, at 25k? It's like car advice from Bill Lumbergh, only at least he had a pretty sweet car. Keep up the good work, as the data you have is great, and I am sure some need the advice. However, I'll stick to reading CR if I need help picking out a washing/dryer.

    I'm thinking of buying a small SUV for the first time due to some very occasional light off road driving that I have to do for my job and for better winter driving and I'm wondering what SUV would be the cheapest for me between savings due to low purchase price, savings on repairs due to good reliability, and savings at the pump due to good fuel economy. From what I've been able to look up my choices seem to be the Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid, the regular Crosstrek, the Subaru Forester, and the Mazda CX-5. Am I missing one?

    Favorite podcast. I love my subscription to CR; you are the best. Anyways, I have a question regarding the poor performance of cars in the new small overlap test. If I'm driving down, say, a two lane road without any type of shoulder and barriers on each side, and there's an oversized load driving directly down the middle of the lane, what would I do? Before this crash test, my reaction would be to get as far from the vehicle as possible, but now I'm not so sure. Since my car has a better moderate-overlap score, would the appropriate reaction in this worst-case scenario be to turn INTO the center of the oncoming vehicle? This assuming that the truck was absolutely not going to be able to stop. Thanks!

    Is Golf Mk7 that good? Good enough to compare it to the GTI? Would you recommend me getting either of those over my G37s coupe? I understand that they're in different classes but fun is what I look for in a car the most. So, it would be great if GTI is more fun with better practicality and fuel economy.

  • @andrewnprice
    @andrewnprice 9 лет назад

    Not to be nitpicky here since I completely understand that you did not have reliability data on the new Golf... but the commenters said Golf not GTI. A 1.8T Golf SE with the VW equivalent to Subaru's Eyesight system (admittedly sans AWD and with leatherette instead of real leather) actually has a lower MSRP than a fully loaded Imprezza Limited (by about $500 according to the online configurators), and base as well as tiered prices seem to be similar across the board. While I am sure Gabe would say if you were going to buy a Golf you should get a GTI: you can't really fault VW for making the more expensive GTI such a nice vehicle to drive a daily basis and then reward Subaru for not doing the same with the new WRX. (And for the record: this is coming from someone that is both a Subaru and a VW fan.)

    The new Sorento is almost as good as the new Edge, but has a third row of seats. Would you go for the Kia if you marginally value the extra passanger capacity or is the Ford too good to pass from your test experience?

    • @rindos-mom
      @rindos-mom 9 лет назад

      The Sorento with the turbo engine has 5 seats and comparable leg room and cargo space to the Edge. I'm actually on the fence between the two myself. The Sorento feels high-quality (the interior is much nicer than I was expecting) and has thoughtful features for a more affordable price. Nothing I didn't like about it. I think the Edge looks great and might be more fun to drive (especially the Sport!), but it costs more and has the MyFord Touch I hear complaints about.

    My problem with Ford SUVs is they've seemed to cram them all into a fairly narrow price range. You could walk into a Ford Dealer with 40gs and walk out with anything from an Escape to an Expedition and that Edge, Flex, Explorer jumble. What's the point? It hearkens back to the old GM policy of making one vehicle with 4 different badges. Do three: A small SUV a midsize and a Family hauler.

    @Seth Ragonese Ford is adding those capabilities as part of their PCA package on future vehicles. As I assume that the new Edge will offer that as an option: I thin that is in part where their information is coming from. www.cars.com/articles/2014/10/ford-adds-auto-braking-pedestrian-detection-to-collision-warning-system/

    Great show. Glad you guys make it. Two things that bugged me though!
    1. You haven't tested a new Civic Si! It still has the rating from when it was noisier and had a much worse interior, so don't talk poorly of a car that you technically haven't tested. Sure, it's mostly similar, but the worst parts of it are hugely improved.
    2. Seriously? More RLX insults? I think Gabe just hates it. It scores reasonably, so why bring it up so much? The Chevy Impala doesn't have the sophistication, materials, features, and more that the RLX does. Stupid comparison that nobody will make.

    • @gabepettinicchio7454
      @gabepettinicchio7454 9 лет назад +1

      Not to mention the "SI" is bullet proof. Let's face it, it's the most reliable sports coupe by a long shot. For me though, I hate the two tear dash and the lack of low end torque.

    • @Brian-Burke
      @Brian-Burke 9 лет назад

    Well, the Trax is only new to America. It's kind of an older vehicle and it turned out to be a pretty mediocre offering from the get go (as with all Chevrolets offered abroad but not in America). Under previous GM leadership the car wasn't even supposed to show up in the US but the explosion of the small CUV segment has kind of forced their hand. The next one might stand a better chance.

  • @DMaster27
    @DMaster27 9 лет назад

    Question for you at Consumer Reports, Mazda has been talked a lot about - their koto design language, new Mazda Miata etc. But I feel that the Hyundai grou makes better vehicles. Forget the Miata because Hyundai does not have a comparison car. Let's take the new Sonata vs Mazda 6. Which of these is an all around better car? I have driven the new Sonata. This car bares no resemblance in engineering to the Hyundai Stellar of the day. Why buy a Mazda when you can have a similar car at Ford? What is the big hoot and a holler about Mazda. I just don't see it.
