Actually, we do play this birthday song a lot here in Israel even up until this day xD I was shocked when I found out it represented us at Eurovision (even more shocked when I heard they came 5th haha)
In Israel, the 1999 entry is used at pretty much every birthday party. As a kid I never knew it was originally from Eurovision, but when I found out it finally made sense why it had English in it haha
I loooove that you enjoyed older songs. Sure, everyone loves Ofra Haza, but when I say to people that Kan by Duo Datz is still one of my fav ESC songs they look at me like I'm a weirdo, lol. And Avi Toledano surely served som middle eastern hunkyness 😍
Yeah but Chai was iconic. I mean, sending that song in Munich? Eleven years after the shooting at the Olympics? Like that was Israel pouring salt on all of Europe.
Actually a lot of songs from that video are now really famous kids songs which everybody who grew up in Israel knows,I was really surprised that they originate from eurovision.
Alesia, Thank you so much for that! I am a fan and it was really touching to see you pay tribute to my country in Eurovision :) BTW I have to know what are your thoughts on Dana International and her historic LGBT victory?
To answer your question: The hora itself is a dance typically done at major cultural events like weddings and bar mitzvahs, but not with the Avi Toledano song unfortunately! Chai, Kan, and Hallelujah are major cultural staples though, and all were featured in some form or another at our latest official Independence Day celebration! I think Ofra Haza's song "Chai" also needs to be put in context a bit to be fully appreciated. That year's contest was in Munich where memories of both the Holocaust and Munich Massacre were relatively fresh. Instead of pretending Eurovision 1983 was business as usual, Israel sent a song containing a chorus that translates to "I'm still alive, alive, alive! The people of Israel live! This is the song my grandfather sang to my father, and today I sing." It was a very symbolic moment for Israel to be singing about the years ahead "too numerous to count," and the song came just seven points away from winning!
01:52 When I was 5 years old I went to Eden's band performance with my parents and I got lost in the crowd right when they sang this song. I was in such a trauma that every time I heard this song at a friend's birthday party as a kid I started crying lol
Just discovering this video, great as usual. It is not surprising that you got emotional at the song Chai. Its lyrics are referencing singing a song through generations, people being alive, etc. It is not a coincidence that it was performed in Germany only a generation after the Holocaust, with the dancers wearing yellow to connote the stars. Germany gave it 12 points :)
Haha this video got recommended to me out of nowhere :D but I'm not mad My absolute favorite Israeli entry is 1973 Ey Sham 🇮🇱 , the first song playing in this top. It's so optimistic and genuine and I love the orchestra break
First of all you are so preety !!! Amazing ! After it been said ... About Ofra Haza rip - The songs name is "Hai" wich means in hebrew "live" - The ESC on that year been held in Germany - And this song (second place) had a real meaning - Am Israel hai ! The people of Israel are live - After all !
I joined the fan club of Eurovision when I was less than 12 years of age... 1973. Israel sent so many good entries that were left out of your list, such as: Emor Shalom 1976 (6th place) ruclips.net/video/6_nROPfn4Nc/видео.html Same Heart 2014 (non qualifier...) ruclips.net/video/acOZVEN5XjE/видео.html The Fire in Your Eyes 2008 (9th place) ruclips.net/video/rkTOM4ySrmM/видео.html Amen 1995 (8th place) ruclips.net/video/cSeMqcuxHhA/видео.html
Dear alesia you are so sweet and adorable thank you so much for this video thanks for such an hunour lots of love hanna shalala from Israel 💋 💋 💋 💋 💋 💋 💋 Toda Raba (thank you in Hebrew) 💕💕💕💕
Love your reactions since last year, I really want you to react to our new candidate for Eurovision 2019, is name is Kobi Marimi there still not official song to the contest but he have amazing performances in the rising stars, my favorite performance was hallelujah by Leonard Cohen, you have to see this
3:08 i think there is a big stereotype about israel's dancing. That today we all gathering and dancing is circles. You can put this song and dance but people will look at you like you just swallowed an entire fish. But sometimes we put it just to be a little nostalgic
I think the best Israel entry was "Rak Bishvilo" [only for him] from 2013. Perhaps the singer's attire contributed to the poor result. Also, some commenters have mentioned Ofra Haza, and I am not sure if Alesia knows that name. Haza performed "Chai" [or "Hi"] in 1983. Look at that one again. She was one of Israel's greatest musicians, and sadly left us too soon in year 2000. www.haza.co.il
3:16 not Ofra was the voice behind the beautiful song deliver me from prince of Egypt ruclips.net/video/1-WimijgGEU/видео.html she was amazing RIP Ofra
Hora dance became a meme in israel because every country in the world think it's our national dance, the only pepole who dance hora is the ashkenazi elderly. Knowledge...
A) Are you American? That's a little weird to have an American interested in Eurovision. B) How do you know so much about Israel (you missed a bit, but I got the feeling you know a lot).
Alesia Michelle Yayy ! you ere very welcome! i have a bus from my home to tel aviv and i want to come everyday when everything will happen. that 2 weeks. maybe i will meet you
