  • In this episode of mediabistroTV's "My First Big Break," legendary CBS anchor Dan Rather recounts the break he got covering Hurricane Carla in 1961.
Rather was an anchor at KHOU in Houston when the hurricane approached the Gulf of Mexico. After mapping the hurricane's path, Rather traveled to Galveston Island to cover the storm. There, he overcame high winds, flooding, and even poisonous snakes to cover the hurricane.
Along the way, he innovated how TV stations cover severe weather, and CBS News took notice.
Rather can now be seen on HDNet's "Dan Rather Reports."

Dan Rather was one of the best journalists, along with Peter Jennings and Tom Brokaw

John Ackerman Yes! I was born and raised in SCalifornia and remembered my mom and dad use to watch these guys all the time...they were indeed great journalists...I was just 9 when Hurricane Carla hit and at that time I thought it was cool to have a hurricane named after me...of course it wasn’t till later when I grew up and understood the devastation it caused that I felt so bad for all these people and their animals...

The eye of Carla passed within about 60 miles of our home in East Texas. It spawned an F3 tornado that leveled homes in our small town. I was 5 yrs old at the time and remember my mom in a panic trying to keep us kids away from the windows. I was fascinated with the wind and all the things blowing by! After it passed we went out into the back yard and it was completely trashed with broken trees and downed branches. It's one of my most vivid early memories.

Thanks Dan Rather for all your interest in hurricanes. Putting the transparent map of Texas on the radar screen. I was in Corpus Christi during Carla.

The biggest mistake Dan Rather made in his career was replacing Walter Cronkite when he retired. Dan was and is a reporter's reporter. He should have stayed out in the field working for 60 Minutes covering any story that was out there because he was like a blood hound. His boss would say,"Dan, there's a war/hurricane/earthquake/whatever out there. Grab a crew and go." Rather would go to where ever the action was, get the story and then get it on the air while saying "Woof!"
I'm not going to say that his type of journalist isn't around anymore because there are plenty of younger journalists still out there. But Dan wrote the book.

If Dan had not had this big break, he would have ended up as Marvin Zindler's KHOU competition.

I was 4 when Carla hit the Gulf Coast. You might say Carla was the ill wind that blew another ill wind onto the CBS airwaves.

The truth is that Dan Rather's big break was, "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?" by R.E.M.

This is the man who torpedoed Walter Cronkite and then drove CBS (the #1 rated news service) to forth or fifth? by the time he retired. Bravo.

@1900stratoliner You clearly have no idea what fascism is. You also have no idea what Marx stood for. I bet you think he is a socialist too. hahaha. Go back to faux news and listen to some talk radio. It's obvious this is where you are getting your "definitions".
