    I think one of the main reasons aluminum is so heavily recycled is because we can collect it and take it to recycling center and get paid for the recycling of it.

    • @Raja1938
      @Raja1938 2 года назад +10

      Yes, also the fact that aluminum can be endlessly recycled unlike plastic which might be recycled only once or twice at best.

    The "being an advocate" part has kinda become my thing. There have been several "no packaging" stores popping up at several towns here in Saarland, Germany. I've checked them out and posted about it on Facebook. That got colleagues, friends and family curious and slowly but surely people from my circle are starting to try out these stores. So, I guess you could be the first domino that gets the thing going? Even if it's just on a local level.

      Same here! I’ve been mentioning in conversations the veg box scheme at a local community farm and the registration-only bulk store I usually shop at, and housemates and colleagues got interested. As far as I know, they are very happy with locally grown, seasonal vegs, freshly harvested and delivered weekly at their door (except maybe from the fact that they cannot choose the content, so they have to take time to find new recipes).
      Same for the bulk store, which is basically pooled orders bought in bulk directly from the producers and customers just collect their individual order in the organiser’s garage. My housemate even claims that pasta in bulk are tastier than the ones at the supermarket 🤨!

    Again here: well done!
    My main problem is really that people overestimate the individuals' impact. I can still fight for more sustainable policy if I am not able to fully live a perfect sustainable Lifestyle. I often hear: But you have a car! But you still use a plastic XY! They do not take me serious then. Think I am a imposter. But I keep trying.
    The carbon footprint was invented by oil industry to give responsibility to the consumer. And the footprints in western countries are high also because of the Infrastructur. A big part of your impact is NOT in your control. We need a change in the system. And have to communicate. A lot of people do not get it, I am thankful that you talk about it.

    In the beginning I found zero waste overwhelming. Where to start, how to do it all? I started by focusing on one thing at a time. Where was my biggest waste. One of mine were food storage bags. I bought silicone bags & glass containers that I could use over & over. What next and so on. I'm expanding my knowledge little by little, but can already see all the changes I have made & continue to make progress on my journey.
    I have been slacking on the politics side and writing to the companies asking for more change. I think that will be my next focus. Thanks for all your advice

    If you still don't want to repeat an outfit and you want to be more sustainable look into up cycling your old clothing into new clothing or reusable bags. You can also reuse your the pieces of the outfit in new outfits. Buying from second hand shops like they said is so great. I love this channel so much.

    This is such a great video and I am so glad you mentioned the intersections and systemic issues. You did an amazing job and I learned a lot. Very thought provoking. I posted this in a discord group of mine to have a discussion around it hopefully. It's also important to mention accessibility issues and affordability...for example, some people with disabilities cannot use paper straws even though they are supposed to be more environmentally friendly and I don't even know if they actually are...

    Noticed from the big companies impacting things point; "organic cotton" does not necessarily equal "sustainable cotton". Organic farmers can still use lots of diesel fuel, bring in tons of off-site fertilizers, etc. The lifecycle can still be very carbon hungry. Companies like H&M supporting something like Sustainable Hemp production would be a solid step in a good direction.

    I love your channel and thank you for bringing this mainstream! With that said being said, I am a gen X and I miss the way clothing was made to last vs now. It’s disposed after a season! What I mean by that, I want a sweater that doesn’t pill after one or two wears! Last yr while moving I found a tote with some of my old favorite clothes I wore during college. My daughter-in-law fell in love with them and she has commented on how well the clothing was made (she is wearing most of them). THIS NEEDS TO MAKE A COME BACK!! If you have never seen the mountains of clothing we donate to places like goodwill that do NOT sell? It’s shipped to Africa! Most of this stuff is name brand!! please, please, please stop giving clothing to Salvation Army, goodwill or any other place like this!! I would rather see it in our landfills vs mile high mountains of clothing offshore on their beaches!! Sorry to be so passionate about this but this nation needs to stop passing our problems onto other countries.

      I think the best option would be to gift clothing to those who really need it. Like hosting a clothing swap with friends, gifting a clothing item to a loved one whose been eyeing it, or donating something to a nursing home. That way you know it'll actually get used because I agree - most clothing that goes in bins or mainstream thrift stores will just lead to more waste.

    First time viewer here found you from Shelbi but I'll share my view on both your channels. Good points enjoyable listen. We can all do this one step at a time please keep sharing. I recently was at Krogers and they had little paper bags with handles for fruit versus plastic bags. I was excited as I had forgotten my own produce bags and made a point of getting a store manager to tell him how happy I was with the paper bag alternative he said "honestly? We only have those bags because we could not get the plastic bags" sigh. I made a point of emailing Kroger Corp and telling them my experience.. Krogers is supposedly Big on Zero Sustainability (they have a very long way to go). But if we each take the time to do just that one little thing we can make a Big Impact. I am middle aged and just really starting on the Zero Waste journey some things I have always just done but am now more focused on Gardening, Composting taking that up a few notches this year, I love the thrift stores and buy most of what we have there from clothing to housewares to sheets/blankets/towels and all things in between. Sat here watching you all while I crocheted a dish rag from cotton material. A recent Upcycle. My neighbor who just bought new "used" furniture of FB Marketplace, had a couch and loveseat to sell she called me wanting to know if I knew anyone looking for furniture which actually I did (4 dogs) so I bought her old furniture which she had boughten used herself 3 years ago so that furniture is now on its 3rd home with us. Network with your friends before buying new they just might have what you need. Thank you for sharing. Anna In Ohio.

      Nice to see a fellow crocheter on here. I too have been making the shift to cotton, although I have quite a bit of acrylic yarn to use up. I've been trying to research eco-friendly yarn, and the companies that are considered are quite expensive compared to what I've been buying. I have noticed that Lion Brand seems to be one of the more sustainable of the mainstream yarn companies. They have a couple of lines made from recycled materials and also bamboo yarn and hemp yarn. I'm also into gardening. I don't have much luck growing my own food (the rabbits, squirrels and birds get most of it before I do), so I focus more on growing flowers and other plants for the pollinators.

    • @buckeyedav1
      @buckeyedav1 2 года назад

      @@beverlyparrish4452 The print was so tiny on my crochet thread we had to get a magnifying glass it's from Turkey. I haven't been in a craft store in over 2 years so I haven't looked at what's available. I do look for cotton yarn in the thrift stores yesterday they had a whole grocery cart of yarns someone donated but not cotton. I don't crochet much anymore but am ditching the sponges which I'd fallen in to the bad habit of using over the years instead of my own crocheted ones. I'll be making a few for Christmas gifts for friends and neighbors. I will be planting this fall a wildflower garden, my neighbor who is also a friend has a beautiful one and my vegetable garden benefits from all the bees visiting. Anna In Ohio.

    Hi :) I have a question! There has been a lot of focus on using glass instead of plastic for things like food containers. I work at a recycling station in Norway, and we only send those smaller pieces of glass (that are not made as single use food containers/bottles ect.) to landfill. We do not send them to be recycled and I honestly don't think you can do that at all in my city. Still people in the zero waste movement goes out and buys new glass containers believing they would be able to recycle them if they break. How is this in the US? Do you have many places where you can send mason jars ect. to be recycled?

    I'm just starting to get involved in the whole zero-waste thing, and at the same time I'm also currently trying to find local environmental organizations to get involved in, and I feel like while of course the activism stuff is probably gonna make a bigger change overall, I have to do the small, individual-focused stuff to keep myself sane, because it helps to feel like I'm individually doing something, even if it isn't very much, if that makes sense

    the whole thing with having packaging be recyclable but not MADE from recycled material just goes to show how all these companies so desperately want the focus and responsibility to be on the consumer and not on them. they wanna be seen as environmentally friendly but not put in the work, so they pass the work off to the end consumer, who is then told to recycle the product. going zero waste, or at least reducing waste as an end consumer is great, but we really need to focus on pressuring companies into doing the same because they're the biggest offenders. every consumer in the world could be zero waste and the environment would not be saved because companies are still producing so much waste.
