  • Butzbach's Military housing complex for U.S. Soldiers and dependents closed it's doors forever in July 2007.
A short visit to bring back many treasured memories.....and this song says it all for me
What I would give to go back :(
** Update as of 2013, Roman Way Housing, as we all remember it, is being demolished to make room for new Residential Development. I can not get myself to post these horrible pictures of this mayhem and destroying our precious memories. This is the place where I grew up and finally "became a Man"
If anyone is interested, please e-mail me Roadking1970@gmail.com and I will send you some pictures.

As a newly married couple we lived in Roman Way. I think it was building 6525, the last building in the video by the playground. We were there from 1998-2001. It is sad to see it abandoned. I thought the Germans would move into it after all military left. Most of that housing was in excellent condition. I sure miss it. Thanks for posting this, it brought back many memories for me.

Thank you!!! I miss my home in Butzbach so very much. That was my first home with my husband and the first home of my daughter. When you drove my the park she used to play at, I just started crying. Such sweet memories of such happy times. I would do anything to be back there now.
    THANK YOU!!!!

Thank you so very much for the videos, my memories are very strong, as it happened yesterday, but in reality they happened 71-75. This place holds the deepest place in my heart, because I met the love of my life there at age 7, in 4A Oregon- straight across from the Elementary school driveway... We used to play Marbles right in front of of my housing unit.

Wow. This was unexpected. Thank you so much. We were stationed in Frankfurt, Murnau, Oberammergau, Garmish, and Butzbach 1962-1967. I was a year and a half old when we arrived. Lives revolved around The Stairwell. I remember the excitement of the snow, and riding our sleds down the slope behind the Building--- was it Roman Way? I remember my mom died sheets bold colors, and tore them into strips, and wove them in and out of the railings on our balcony, for both color and privacy. I remember being carried upstairs 2 flights mostly by my hair because I wouldn't stop crying in stairwell 7. I remember learning to ride a bike on the sidewalks through housing. I remember that my mom was pissed about rats in the laundry room, and the CO said they were just mice, so Daddy went down in his combat boots and stomped one, then delivered to to the CO, with a second request to get rid of the rats. Thanks again!

Really brings tears to my eyes knowing how much great memories me and my family had. I lived here from 2000-2005 when my mom was stationed in the army. I had great times here making new friends and going to butzbach elementary and just having some really fun adventures. I truly had the best years of my life here and I'm glad to say I had the best childhood here and I wish I could go back but I'm pretty sure everything is torn down :( Thank you for sharing this video roadking1970.

I lived here back in '69-'72 when my Dad was stationed here. This video brings back a lot of memories. It sure has changed a lot though. I remember walking up to the elementary where I attended. Also, into town to the theatre. I remember the was an old prison close by. My friends and I would walk up the road on the big hill behind our apartment and play in the woods.

Lived in Roman Way 1986-1987. Used to skateboard down the big hill, past the prison, and toward downtown Butzbach. So many memories.

We lived there 66-68, 16-E Texas Road. I'm sending this on to our son, who was 10 when we left in Oct 68 for his dad to go to Vietnam. The 2013 update is upsetting; however, I'd rather the buildings be torn down and replaced by homes rather than let them deteriorate and fall down from decay. Thanks for the pictures.

Thank you so much for the memories. Mom, Dad, my sister, and one brother have left us. Too soon! This is where I started school and my brother Michael was born.his Godparents who are now gone are from Butzbach. The last time I was there was when my Aunt & her husband were stationed there. We stayed with them for a couple of weeks waiting for them to finish up the housing in Ludwigsburg in 1962. It is know German housing. They finally tore this down I think it was 2013, we were planning to go & my sister got Leukemia and didn't make it.

I luv this video. Use to walk down prison road and yell at the prison. They didn't like that. They would shine there light on us and told us to stop. Of course we would keep doing it. Plus I drank alot with there is no drinking age. I miss being there. All my friends back then I wish I could see them again. Two of my friends got in touch with me on Facebook. Haven't heard from them in 37 years. That really is so cool. I even talked to Mike my first luv. I will always remember the great times there but I still have my memories.

WOW-what great memories and thank you so much for sharing this video. I lived there along with my brothers Roger and Kenny from Dec 1975 til June of 77. Hard to describe. You just had to live there with the great friends we had there. If anybody else was there then, let me know. Walked prison road many many times. Spent alot of time at the DYA. Foodland used to be right there at the end of the Y. That was my first job. Brent Harrison

@jrroxx2112. Hey yeah, thanks for the memories. I now recall that prison when we'd walk to the theater on base. I remember waving at the prisoners as we walked by. I also recall finding a needle on the ground. I remember thinking 'oh no, drugs'. And sledding down the big hill by the elementary school. Someone had brought a tank fender and was using that for a sled. Good times! 1972-1975, 7E Texas Road.

Thanks for the memories. I was there as a dependent from 74 to 76. At the end of the video you drove up Georgia Rd (I plotted out your route against a google map) and got a great shot of our old apartment (3:46, 1st floor on the very end). I could see that the bratwurst stand that was at the end of Georgia Rd on the German side is gone. Rosie ran it and Betty had the one up by the school. Rosie had the better Bratwurst, but Betty had the best pommes frites and more candy. Roy
