This was John's Vietnam War protest song. Leaving on a Jet Plane meant that he was getting shipped overseas.
For Momma Cass, California Dreaming by the Mommas and the Pappas.
My high-school counselor was his uncle. His name was David Deutschendorf. The year before he passed John Denver(Deutschendorf) took a break from traveling to stay with his uncle. His uncle David, convinced him to do a high school concert. We sat and watched John get introduced by his uncle as John Deutschendorf, he sat at the center circle of our gymnasium on a folding metal chair with just his guitar and and a mike. He sang for his uncle and our small town high-school in the middle of nowhere Kansas. And yes I get emotional too....
What a wonderful memory for you!
Losing John Denver was such a great loss. He was still so young and full of life. I'm 71 years old now and I remember when hit the music scene he was a massive star. His music was on every radio station, he was a guest on every variety show, had a bunch of his own specials, made a movie or two, he hosted the 26th - Grammy awards, he was everywhere and everybody loved him, including me! Yes, I miss John too, such a talent and a wonderful human being. The world is a lesser place because of his passing.
And without Karen Carpenter
got to see him live when I was in my 20's
Two lives lost too soon.... I hope they are in that heavenly chorus out there somewhere....
When you hear John Denver sing, he literally enters your soul....
You are sure to like “Grandma’s Feather Bed”.
John Denver + Mama Cass = Devastating dose of musical talent
As an Army brat I have a lot of friends in my past who cry every time this song comes on because it was in its prime when our dads were going off to the war in Viet Nam. Our moms cried or got very silent when it played, and that sticks with you. My peewee league coach didn't come back, and the was the first time I realized what war really meant, and this song was playing in the car when we found out.
"Annie's Song" is one of the greatest love songs ever. That's a song by him that will make you happy. Also, his big hit "Rocky Mountain High" will make you smile, along with "Calypso" which is his tribute to the crew of the oceanographic adventure ship of the same name.
I agree, good choices.
Summer.
Is it true he wrote that for his wife while he was having an affair? Always makes me wonder what state of mind you’re in to do that. Not judging, just contemplating.
I always thought Annie’s Song would be what I would like to hear on my deathbed. So beautiful, and embodies how I feel about my hubby and the deep love we share and the primal and heavenly joy of it. The biggest blessing in my life. How fortunate we have felt to have one another.
My personal favorite of John Denver's is Rhymes and Reasons. It wasn't much of a hit, though; just on one of his albums.
The 2 of them sound like they were meant to sing together.
My! Is that not beautiful? The simple harmony, so perfect, the picking, the lyrics. I love singing Cass' part--I feel like I'm channeling her. Sad, but Elliott was a genius songwriter. We love your emotion over this song.
It's so hard when you see two of the sweetest, gentlest, talented people and know they were taken way too soon! Hearing them sign together must be what heaven sounds like...
I’m 70 years old and I have never seen this performance before!! Thank y’all for bringing me new sounds that I missed growing up 😎☮️❤️👵🏼
Music is just about one of the greatest things humans ever came up with. What amazing voices, what a loss they both left us way too young.
Each time I hear Cass open that harmony after singing so close to John I get goose bumps. The skill of the two of them together is breathtaking.
1972
They were still drafting young men and putting them on jet planes back then.
Could that be what this song is about?
"I'll bring back a wedding ring."
Not only was he a great singer, Mr Denver was a great human. He was very active in wildlife and environmental conservation as far back as the 70's.
And Mary Travers, Of Peter, Paul and Mary has passed on. Please listen to their version too ☮️💜
Effortless harmony. Truth, Beauty, Goodness we are drawn to it. It's natural to us bcse that's what we come from and seek return to, our goal & end.
If you don't wanna cry,listen to John's song,Thank God I'm a Country Boy!
Leaving on a Jet Plane, is a Symbolic Song for so many of us , before our Deployments.. It has Transcended Time.. Thank-you for sharing it & the Memories it brings...
i've always enjoyed listening to john denver as kid. (i'm 60 years old). i vaguaely remember this segment. i was 8 years old when this came out. i was going into 3rd grade. (mama cass) cass elliot died a couple of years later. one of the few artists of that era that didn't die from a plane crash or over odsed from drugs. she died to young.
All John Denver's songs take you someplace! His voice is a warm ,cozy blanket on a cold day! I was a 7 year old child when this came out.I listen to this weekly, even in my 50's.😫
Gorgeous! There's a good reason why you get so emotional, John not only had an incredible voice and songwriting ability, he was a beloved figure. He was very likeable and his death hit hard to a lot of people.
John Denver was, and is, my favorite artist. I love everything he has ever done. When he was killed, it took nearly two years before I could, once again, deliberately put on his albums and listen to him. I’d seen him in concert so many times, bought all his albums, watched his movies that the loss seemed very, very personal. I, finally, came to accept that he died doing what he loved as much as he loved writing and playing his music. After all these years, John Denver reigns as the number one happy place in music for me.
John's "Poems, Prayers and Promises" is powerful and will nail your heart.
John's voice leaves you hanging suspended but when Cass joins in they set you afloat.
My mother met him when she was in college in the 70's in Alamosa Colorado. She said he was one of the sweetest most considerate people that she had ever met. And that he had a presence during his performances that you can't really feel with his records. She said that it didn't matter how many people were there it always felt as though he was singing directly to you.
This was 15 days before I was born. Grew up with this music, love it.
Cass could have blown away Denver, if she wanted to, but she adjusts so perfectly to him!
Upbeat John Denver would surely include "Calypso", his tribute to oceanographer Jacques Cousteau, whose ship was called the _Calypso._
Loved that TV show…
Awww...man Harri...never apologize for how art effects you. IT means your human mate! :)
Two unbelievable talents on one stage and yes they both left us to soon...john was in a cab on his way to rehearsal with the Chad Mitchell trio when Peter Paul and Mary's version came on the radio...john said he just started sobbing because he never thought a song he wrote would ever be on the radio...john questioned his own talent his whole life...sad part is NO ONE who ever heard him questioned his unequaled talent
My sister and I many years ago, we used to sing this song to our little brother. He would cry. We have apologized a 10000 times. But to this day he still remembers. We have a great loving reastionship. But her and I as we have gotten older, how unkind we were
"Annie's Song" or "Rocky Mountain High" would be a couple of good ones by John for you to do Harri..Or one of my favs by him, "Back Home Again"
"Back Home Again" has always been my favorite.
I remember those times. Beautiful days listening to both John and Cass. And hey, I loved seeing you so emotional. It's OK. Mama Cass's song Play Your Own Kind of Music is more upbeat and has a beautiful message.
You react deeply because like them, you are a kind and gentle soul. What a great time for music. People searching for how to be human. Being cool, while important, is secondary.
Calypso is a uplifting song of John's you might want to check out.
Mama Cass: "Words of Love", soft and tender won't win a girl's heart anymore! If you love her then you must send her, somewhere where she's never been before! Tremendous showcase for Cass's voice and great song.
I love John Denver Music. "Calypso" is awesome !!!
She's like an angel !
My youngest sister and I would sing this to our little brother. He would cry and we thought it was funny. That was 45 years ago. He has always reminded that. We are very close, but I wish we hadn't made him cry..
John lived a great life with so much success so celebrate his life and think happy thoughts as he brought such happiness to millions of people!❤️👍🏻🎤☮️
This is a Beautiful performance.♥️ Their voices are so good together! Both of them incredible and gone too soon. Peter Paul & Mary had a huge #1 hit with this John Denver song. 🎼🎵🎶🇨🇦
I hear you Harri. Nothing wrong with crying. I'm 62 and still cry hearing this song. Reminds me heading off to the military.
A very sensitive reaction. How could anyone not shed tears at the beauty of this?
You're cool, Harri! Crying is real, human. 💚💚💚
This was a song from vietnam era and many never returned
I was 6 years and 7 days old when we watched this, I turned 55 years old today... August 12, 2021
Great reaction. I think Cass Elliot is one of the most under rated female singers to come out of the 60s and 70s. I love to listen to her sing.
He wrote so so many great songs he was an amazing man, singer, writer, humanitarian and ecologist. Thank God I'm a country boy brings a massive smile to my face(now on an advert here) but for something totally different him singing port of Amsterdam is fucking awesome
When it gets nearer to Christmas, John Denver did a whole special with the Muppets that’s worth viewing..some beautiful Xmas songs. If you just want to smile, the performance of Twelve Days of Christmas that opens that show is just lovely.
We didn't get much sleep, but we had a lotta fun on grandma's featherbed!
All I can say is that 70s music strikes again.❤❤❤❤❤❤
"Rocky mountain high" BY John Denver is awesome!!!!
Give it up for Cass Elliot!
Anything by John Denver is a pleasure to listen to.
Rocky Mountain High, Thank God I'm A Country Boy
Ahhh Mama Cass... another beautiful soul. I was 15 when this came out... I remember it like yesterday....
John and Cass had great chemistry and harmony.
This song was a big hit for PP&M before John started singing the songs he wrote. It's about a guy getting on a plane to go to Vietnam, saying goodbye to the woman he loves.
That was so beautiful I started packing a bag like I was leaving somewhere.
Thank God I’m A Country Boy and Grandma’s Feather Bed would be good cheery romps from John Denver.
John Denver Rocky Mountain high, Mama Cass Dream a little Dream, but there is many many more!
John Denver, Thank God I'm a Country Boy, very happy song.
Its really simple. Its hard to ruin a great song. A great song like this makes any singer sound their best. Its why every version soars.
Cass Elliot - "Dream a Little Dream." and anything with the Mamas and Papas. And Jet Plane - P,P&M version is wonderful.
We were so blessed to have such talent.
Came on the radio while I was leaving my girlfriend’s house, on my way to hop a plane to boot camp. Tough to listen to.
This and 500 miles by Peter Paul and Mary...Oh so heartfelt and lonesome...
Eagle and the Hawk and Calypso are two great upbeat songs by John Denver…. Enjoy!!
"Rocky Mountain High" would make you smile IMHO.
You need to listen to “Annie’s Song “. John Denver wrote it for his wife Annie. They had quarreled before he left for a performance and he wrote it to let her know what she meant to him. It means even more when you know the story behind it.
Great song!
Hi Harri
Made a 75 year old cry along with you. For happy John Denver try Grandmas feather bed. Will bring a big smile to you face.
Top trumps for playing this version. Two truly great artists
Live is better than the record with these two. Unique
Funny you said "Oh God", thats the name of a movie John Denver was in with George Burns.
At 7, my dad took me to my first concert. I have loved John Denver ever since. I'm 53 now and my dad is gone but the music never fails to bring me back.
This is my most favourite John Denver song. Thank you for your reaction. I see you feel it too.
John was an artist…with words and harmonies
Another version of this song that was a hit and beautiful, is by Peter, Paul and Mary. Very famous folk singers from the 60's and 70's. One of the guys wrote, "There is love" when the other was getting married . Must listen to.
Peter, Paul, and Mary do a great version of this song.
God Bless both of them, and the musicians, we'll all hear them and better in heaven!
Great reaction, ty!
"Annie's Song". A beautiful love song, but there's a real life sad aspect to it.
John wrote many songs while he was married to his first wife, Annie. He had a hard time communicating with words so he used songs.
Happy Song by John Denver, Thank God I'm a Country Boy
This version always makes me smile too! Their harmonies locked in & wow!
Pure talent. Awesome harmonies. I wish I had all the beautiful guitars that John owned.
John Denver had such a beautiful voice and coupled with his incredible lyrics can evoke powerful emotions. I still tear up at this, my favorite JD song. Still on my playlists. I really appreciate your emotional reactions. ❤️
" Take Me Home Country Roads" its the state song of West Virginia !!!
I'm glad you aren't cool!! John's music touches me to the bone. I always felt like he was a person that I could talk with for hours. A soulmate. I have loved him since the 70s. I felt a real and personal loss the day he died, I lost one of my best friends. It's good to know someone else cries over his music. It's just so beautiful. Thank you for this.
You've got to hear his song Calypso. It was written about his love for the ocean and as a tribute to famous oceanographer Jacques Cousteau and his ship named Calypso.
John Denver's most touching song that gets to me every time is "My Sweet Lady" You'd have to be made of stone for that song not to get to you...Really.
It's a very special song for me I was married one month when they perform this song I've lost my husband since but it brings back beautiful memories for me love you Harry God bless you
Harri Best i wish John Denver was still living. Just think if all the beautiful music we've missed since his death ❤️
Awe hunny tears are good, shows we are human...and you are showing fellow feeling, and empathy...that makes a strong man...it shows your strength and loving kindness
How lucky for us that those two found the opportunity to perform together!
One of my favorite John Denver's songs is Lady, My Sweet Lady.
"Thank God I'm a Country Boy" and "Take Me Home,Country Road" are 2 more upbeat songs from John Denver.
Most of John Denver's hits in the seventies were movingly beautiful like this, but I fear that the beauty even of those with happy and positive lyrics like "Sunshine On My Shoulders" from 1971 could still draw tears in you, so I'll recommend his most upbeat hit, "Thank God I'm a Country Boy" from 1974, fast in tempo and positive in lyric. Cass Elliott's songs both solo and with the Mamas and the Papas should be safely tearless for you, but since harmonies seem to brighten your spirits, the group work might be best, so maybe try the Mamas and Papas' playful cover of Rodgers and Hart's "Sing For Your Supper" from 1967. There's no way that one would make you cry, especially if you find the live TV performance of it I've seen, where Cass is particularly funny interacting with her bandmates.
I was also thinking of "Grandma's Feather Bed" for another fun one.
@@danae8112 That's my first go to always.
Growing up with John and being of a Rock crowd we all admired and liked John...No one was ashamed of it...it wasnt uncool to like his stuff because everyone recognized it as Damn good....The music, the words, his voice, his life.....In a time where he would been labeled a "Square" or "Nerd" Johnnie was given a pass because you couldnt deny the spiritual pureness of his work and life.,,,"Calypso" was a good one too...Its a tribute to Jacques Custeau
John was such a nature lover and enjoyed his life, even though it had the trauma and sadness at times, that we all experience. It is what we do for each other and ourselves. Overcoming it is not always easy, but the only answer.
Gliding is a spectacular experience. It is like nothing else one can experience here. At least it was relatively fast and probably very fast. We all have to leave. You make your own decisions about what you do with the time you have been given. God bless him for sharing what he knew.
