    I suspect that these musicians and singers are far better than what Bach had to work with in his day. NBS is a great time to be alive.

      Bach didn't work in the same place throughout his career.
      This BWV 155 cantata was first performed at the Weimar in 1716, in the Weimar ducal court chapel. Surely the singers and musicians at the Weimar ducal court, when Bach worked there, must have been among the best money could buy. The dukes had a capellmeister, a vice capellmeister, a court organist (Bach), a concertmaster (Bach), singers and instrumentalists on the payroll, and expected top-rate music and top-rate performances. The dukes even paid to have their capellmeister and vice capellmeister study in Italy.
      The musicians at the court of Prince Leopold, when Bach was his capellmeister, were virtuoso musicians from the Prussian court capella that Leopold snatched up when he learned the Prussian court had dismissed its capella to save money. Leopold, himself a musician, expected top-rate music and to-rate performances every Sunday.
      Women's voices were not used in German churches until the 19th century. Suspect all you want, but we can be certain that even the most talented boy soprano of any time would not sound at all like the warbly voiced soprano in this performance, who presumably has the type of voice you think is "far better than what Bach had to work with," but which is far removed from the vocal aesthetic of Bach's time. lol

    Jesus what an outrageous recitative. Griet really is a testament of how far performing baroque (Bach anyway) has come, dont think ive gotten that much goosebumps from a recitative. Quite a innovative performance overall actually

      The performance of the recitative sounds outrageously operatic to my ears. While you and your thumbs-up cheerleaders may consider the performance evidence of progress in the performance of Baroque music, the performance is far removed from Baroque performance practice of church music. lol

      @@herrickinman9303 The whole work is absent of baroque practice because 1 movement is sung operatic? Or are the other movements also absent of it with no comparison to the recitative? The rest isnt that operatic to me, and it is the protestant church after all, not the strict music of the renaissance; there are far less objectivity in Bachs music than in the renaissance church, but that can often go a bit too far with todays virtuoso solo vocalists indeed, but like Kant wrote it is important to keep raising questions for the truth is not that simple, and in this case its not merely an ego thing that affects all movements and performance, it is particularly to emphasize the expressiveness of the recitative even if thats mild operatic tendency, and that makes it interesting. The other movements might not call for anything but simplicity and traditional and can be up for debate, but the recitative to me worked perfectly

      @@ru99414 I only listened to the first movement. I'll listen to the rest later. I didn't really care for the singer's voice. Too much vibrato. I don't object to expressive singing, but I thought her interpretation was overly dramatic, i.e., a bit over the top.

    Wunderschöne Aufführung dieser kompakten und fein komponierten Kantate mit durchsichtigen doch herrlichen Stimmen vierer genialen Solisten sowie gut vereinigten und perfekt entsprechenden Tönen aller Originalinstrumente. Der intlligente und geniale Violinist/Dirigent leitet das ausgezeichnete Barockensemble in verschiedenen Tempi und mit sorgfältig kontrollierter Dynamik. Wunderbar und glückliches Neujahr für alle!

    How does the organist know when to play? Does he have a mirror or something? I was always curious about it

      These Dutch church organs always have a mirror, maybe two. The organist is normally seated with his back to the church and has a mirror at his right and/or his left hand side, so looking right or left will give him a view into the church. These large old organs normally also have a section of pipes behind the organist (rugwerk in Dutch, Rückpositiv in German), so the mirror has to be distant enough to offer the organist an unobstructed view past this section of pipes behind his back.

      For the recordings he has a camera. In Bach’s days they were standing around the organ. It is great they use Baroque organs for the recordings.
