Glorious Tram Mine In The Desert Mountains

  • With a lengthy hike and no shade, it would have been wonderful to ride the tram in to this abandoned zinc and lead mine. However, today, only fragments remain of the impressive tram system that once ran here. So, instead, one must now work their way up the boulder-filled ravine and then climb the huge waste rock pile. This route used to be a mule trail, but the trail has been almost entirely carried away by floods over the decades.
    This abandoned mine is older than I realized at the time that we visited. My subsequent research revealed that the ore deposit was actually discovered in the 1800s. The mine operated up until the start of World War II, but the majority of the work took place in the early 1900s.
    For those that do not know as much about tram systems, a complex cable system was set up over the peaks and ridges of these mountains to ferry miners, materials, equipment and ore up and down the mountains. The views would have been phenomenal and it would have been an amazing experience to be soaring hundreds of feet over the sheer cliffs and deep canyons in this area. I'd imagine that many would choose that commute over one stuck in their vehicle on an overcrowded freeway.

    Growing up in California’s “Gold Rush Country” made it easy to take all of the history around us for granted. However, abandoned mine sites have a lot working against them - nature, vandals, scrappers and various government agencies… The old prospectors and miners that used to roam our lonely mountains and toil away deep underground are disappearing quickly as well.
    These losses finally caught our attention and we felt compelled to make an effort to document as many of the ghost towns and abandoned mines that we could before that colorful niche of our history is gone forever. But, you know what? We enjoy doing it! This is exploring history firsthand - bushwhacking down steep canyons and over rough mountains, figuring out the techniques the miners used and the equipment they worked with, seeing the innovations they came up with, discovering lost mines that no one has been in for a century, wandering through ghost towns where the only sound is the wind... These journeys allow a feeling of connection to a time when the world was a very different place. And I’d love to think that in some small way we are paying tribute to those hardy miners that worked these mines before we were even born.
    So, yes, in short, we are adit addicts… I hope you’ll join us on these adventures!

    Have been dealing with a bunch of issues, this is the first time I have been able to stop by in a bit. This was an incredible mine. The amount of hard labor they expended to build the infrastructure and mine the place is staggering to think of. That first large rock wall of gobbing would have been a feat in itself.

    Very inovative workings. Those miners did some heavy work and as you offered, they stayed on the site rather than making more trips then nessesary for "vittles" and supplies. How the heck did mules pull that large trommel up to this height!??

    At 11:41 that is one of 2 thing's. Either a mounting pillar for a small anvil or the mounting pillar for a large vise.
    That's going on the 4 mounting holes on the top. With its height and clearances all around it could be used for holding in place many item's, even holding a pulley shaft/axle in place while mounting the pulley and aligning the keyways then fastening it.

    @ TVR- That triangle structure was likely a mount for a Crank Wench and cable system to turn the loaded ore carts on the slide sheet. The likelyhood of the miners turning the loaded ore carts manually was zero and none, they are too heavy when loaded with unrefined ore. The crank wench likely looked like a ships anchor Capstan or a modern day boat wench like the ones you see on modern day boat trailers, only equipped with steel cable not rope. Based on the design, I would likely favor the Capstan type just for sheer ease in engineering.

    What a great mine. I suspect that large structure towards the end of the video may have been a hoist-house and station for the tram system? The foundation blocks look like they may have support some type of hoist and drive system. The relation to where the slip plate to the structure also may indicated that the ore was dumped into a bin and then loaded into the buckets on the tram?

    Thank You Justin! Another great video! I would like Discovery or Mike Rowe or the equivalent to make a show out of what you are doing. Maybe call it, Mine exploration w Justin. For the purpose of calling attention to the history that is being lost by the elements and the Forest service and to bring you some financial reward for your efforts. Keep up the good work! I believe they used the trommel for classifying - maybe the fine-grained ore was processed on site, or transported differently.

    In that area you referred to as a living quarters, many years ago there used to be a scatter of Popular Mechanics magazines dating from the early 1940's and a variety of kitchen ware utensils.

      Oh, I'm sorry that we didn't get to see that... Those being present would seem to support our assumption about those being living quarters. Thank you for sharing those details.

    Loved this explore so much mate what got me was the rocks held by wooden planks cause that looked sketchy

    • @TVRExploring
      @TVRExploring  2 года назад +2

      Ha, yes, considering the amount of rock being held back, it was sketchy!

    That last part seemed hard to get a scale of the size via the camera. I'm also thinking if that wheel was deformed from the heat of the fire and the weight of the structure.

    Thank you so much for sharing this incredible mine! It is not that often that my interest can be held for almost an hour and I could’ve kept on watching even more from this fascinating place!
    Please tell your buddy that I really liked the style of his forearm tattoos from what I could see on camera.

    Im thinking that they ran the ore through the trammel . Kept the fines to pan themselves for pocket money and tools , and shipped the larger stuff to be crushed and processed .

    • @TVRExploring
      @TVRExploring  2 года назад

      It was a zinc mine though. The "fines" would not have been worth the bother.

    Hi Justin, I wonder if that structure above had a roof on to protect the room below from rain/snow if any but the sides kept more or less open to let the smoke out and bring in fresh air ???. That plate I think is called a skid or slip plate. I've watched so many abandoned mine video's and I agree that rock had great reverb because usually getting towards the end of a drift the sound will start to deaden, very impressive. I would say the trammel wasn't anything to do with the other equipment but that it possibly fell down there because of an earthquake etc. How on earth did they manage to get all of the equipment there in the first place though ?? that would have taken some doing. A fantastic explore with so many different area's to explore, it made me feel dizzy just watching lol.
    Thank you for sharing, much love. xx ❤

      Depending on where the hole was in the floor of that structure, could it have lead to a Chimney of another stove/fireplace (Like in old houses where multiple fireplaces are built below each other all sharing one Chimney) and the structure was living/office space?

    • @TVRExploring
      @TVRExploring  2 года назад +2

      Hi Sue - Yes, I think the effect was to pull the smoke out, but to prevent the rain and snow from coming in. There was no easy way up to that structure and I don't think it ever had a floor. It seemed like it was built solely for the purpose you speculated about. It is hard to imagine how much work it must have been to get all of that equipment and infrastructure to such a remote site!
