- This traditional Irish folk song is presented with the lyrics, chords and a suggested strumming pattern, so you can play or sing along with me and learn how to perform this classic tune.
A song sheet containing the lyrics and chords can be viewed or downloaded from my songbook blog here: jezquaylesongb...
'Whiskey in the Jar' tells the tale of a highwayman who is betrayed by his wife or sweetheart. It was The Dubliners' signature song, and I learned to play it from one of their recordings.
I hope you enjoy strumming and singing along with me! - Jez
I'll be practicing this one for St. Patrick's Day. Thanks, Jez!
Thank you Jez. Not great on the ukulele but I know these chords and just come back from a short break in Belfast and this was playing live in Fibber Magees. So got the Dubliners album "best of",and I'm hooked on Irish folk. Respect and I'm subscribed.
Ah, yes. You can’t beat a bit of Dubliners. Glad you like my video. 👍 Have a browse around my channel - there are plenty more folk songs to try out (Irish and others). Usually only 3 or 4 chords are needed - Jez
Once I get the strum down I’ll be off and running. Glad I landed on your video! 8:19pm
I love your play alongs! Great song choices, easy to follow. And you’re a lovely singer. Thank you!
Thanks very much Carolyn! Glad you like these videos.
This was fun to play and sing. A big thank you, Jez.
👍
Finally getting the hang of things enough to do play-alongs and so far you've got to be one of my favorite channel discoveries so far. All the information is clear and there before I need it; I find myself irritated at all the other "follow-the-arrow" style videos now, lol. This is also the first song I was really able to figure out the singing at the same time, so double thanks!
I'm really pleased you're finding my play-along videos useful. 😊 Happy strumming!
Thank you
It was lovely to be playing with you :)
Thanks very much!
😊I’m pretty new at this ukulele lark - love trying t play along - getting up a bit of speed so keep ‘‘em coming Jez.
Thanks very much Greta! Keep it up👍
Seems to be a perfect ukulele song. Never heard it before, but I am sure it does not get better than this. Thank you, Mr. Quayle
Thanks very much Navin! Yes, I agree. It's a very well known song here in the UK and in Ireland.
I prefer your version of this song,
because I find your chords of
C Am F G7 much easier for me
than other versions that use Em and G
I'm glad you like it Phyllis. Happy strummin'! - Jez
Nice one Jez. Might have to introduce some Lizzy fans to this. ;)
Thanks very much John!
Having bought a Banjolele this year I’m already picking the tune in the same key so I can throw in the occasional embellishment 🪕.
I commend your RUclips page layout, it’s got it all at a glance, with the timing of the chord changes in the correct places( which doesn’t always happen, but you can’t complain too hard about ‘tab sites’ that are free😂👍). Great tutorial 😎🪕👏👏👏👍
Thanks very much!
Always a pleasure to play along! :)
Always loved Thin Lizzie doing this
Remember it coming out
Yours is great though Jez as always.
Thanks very much mate! Yes, I love the Lizzie Version too.
Great song, also a great version by THIN LIZZIE. Thank you.
Thanks very much Jim! Yes, Thin Lizzy's rocky version of this old folk song is great.
Now I know where "Octopuses Garden" is coming from !
Wow, Great job. Nice song.
Thanks very much Christian!
Great song!
Thanks very much Irène!
This sounds fantastic, Jez!! Love it.
Thanks very much Eves! Glad you like it. It means a lot coming from great musicians like you two.
i can't seem to figure out how to get the strum to be so jolly and happy sounding
The secret to making it sound jolly and happy is giving the strum a swing (bounce). A while back I recorded a series of 5 tutorials on strumming techniques/patterns that you may find useful. Here's a link to the first of these: ruclips.net/video/sfbu9-e5E_o/видео.html
Another gem of a video 🙂
Thanks very much Chas!
This is great I was learning this song on an app but something didn’t quite feel right. Then I found out they were using the Metallica version for some reason. Anyways this one fells so much better to sing and play so thank you. This version just “feels right”. But I guess since you play and sing you must understand what I mean by that.
Thanks very much! I'm glad you like my video and found it useful. Yep ...it feels right to me too. I based what I do here on The Dubliners' version of the song.
@@JezQuayle Yep! Thank you for making this video. :)
Thank you👏
👍
Nice
Thanks very much William!
I have a question, if you could answer, thanks in advance: I quite didn't get the strumming pattern, I'm very new to the ukulele but I love this song and the chords are the easiest for beginners and I want to try it. Is it 4 or 6 the tempo? From what I read it's 4 (8), with the first strumming lasting for 1 (2) and the others for 1/2 (1).
This song is in 4/4 (four-four) time, which means that there are four beats in every bar. 'Tempo' actually refers to how fast a song is played, and is usually measured in BPM (beats per minute).
In the notation I use here, each '/' represents one beat. Most popular music is in '4/'4' (four-four) time. So, 'C / / / ' represents a four-beat bar of a C chord, and '/ / / /' represents a four beat of the same chord as the preceding chord. So, 'C / / / / / / /' represents two bars (8 beats) of a C chord.
The strumming pattern is one bar long (they usually are). The numbers in the strumming pattern refer to the beats in each bar. So, when you see 'C / / / / / / /' you play the C chord using the strumming pattern twice. Then, just keep the strumming pattern going in time with the beat of the song, changing chords where indicated. I hope that helps. It may be a good idea to take a couple of lessons from a uke teacher to get you started - Jez
This is great! Are you playing high or low g? guessing low
I meant high
Thanks very much Luke! I have a high g 👍
Hey Jez, another excellent song, thanks for putting this up. I was wondering if you have got any hints on how to sing and strum at the same time for different strum patterns. I can sing and strum Island strum for most songs however, when I try a song with a different pattern such as this one then I always revert back to Island strum I can't seem to shift it out of my head. Keep up the great work. Many thanks, Bill
Thanks very much Bill! I'd suggest strumming this pattern, and this pattern only, over and over for a few days, without singing. Strum along with me in this video maybe. In time it should start to feel 'automatic', like the 'island strum' does at the moment for you. It tends be all about lots and lots of repetition with this kind of stuff. Let me know how you get on with that.
@@JezQuayle Thanks Jez, I'll give that a try. I am trying both this one and Blowing In The Wind which you also did. I'll let you know how I get on.
@@JezQuayle Thanks a lot Jez. I've reasonably cracked this one as well as your version of The Boxer, Blowing in the Wind, and It Must Be Love. Many thanks for your videos Jez, I am starting to see some progress in my playing. Hopefully you'll find time to put some more stuff up please. Many thanks, Bill
Is that a tenor your playing..🤔
Yes👍
