And, a huge special thanks to all the developers that made this video possible.
I am amazed those sounds came from human beings. XD Despite them having to rush it, they were responsible for creating some of the most iconic sound effects of my childhood. And damn, Neil still does the Moneybags voice flawlessly!
I remember seeing that bonus island in Midnight Mountain and wishing I could access it for years. I wasted so many hours (and lives) trying to get there because I could just barely see the extra lives on there, as if they were taunting me, like I *should have* been able to get there. Then, years later, I found out the only ways to get there were by hacking the whirlwind back in, moon-jumping with a cheating device, or absurd proxy jumping that I still can't do to this day.
It's some consolation that I wasn't going nuts and Craig Stitt was just as frustrated, and having the whirlwind put back in for Reignited was the ultimate catharsis.
0:38, proof that Gregg Berger can still pull off his Hunter voice nearly 20 years later!
Agreed. I even like his delivery of Ripto's "I *HATE* dragons!" even more than I did in the original, too! He didn't just retain the voices, he got *better.*
@DeltaGem I love Gregg Berger as ripto and hunter
Him not reprising Hunter, and being replaced with a much more generic, less likable, try hard Hunter is my number 1 most hated thing Reignited Trilogy changed. I'd put up with the torturous loading times, character and voice direction downgrades, if I could just have Gregg as Hunter.
I feel you. Not only did I not like Riptos new voice but I didn't care for his new design either. It sucks because Ripto is 1 of my favorite characters. It didn't ruin Reignited for me though. @@fizzyfuzz5878
I didn't like the new voice of Hunter, but I can definitely hear A more gravelly sound when Gregg does Hunter now. However, I still miss Gregg
'Spyro: Year of the Dragon' is one of the strongest designed early 3D children's games to date. It's a lot more streamlined than the previous instalments, with better respect for the player's time, and the amount of content had practically doubled. Challenge escalation is properly realised, with levels notably getting harder mixed with gradual introduction of fresh mechanics that broaden the core gameplay, and the controller-dependant analog calibration issues had been fixed. 22 years old, and still the most polished and well designed instalment to date.
26:35 Finally, confirmation from a long time employee and the very reason for Spyro's existence that Insomniac left Spyro because they hated working with Universal! I always knew that the 'he has no hands' claim was just a cop out!
@SNAComics Most people don't realize how things IP worked in the gaming industry in the 90's.
While Universal Interactive's toxic management definetely gave them incentive to leave Spyro behind, it really was for the better that Insomniac moved on. You can tell they were burnt out and really running out of ideas on how to iterate on Spyro's rigid gameplay loop by the time they got to the super gimmicky third game.
Jason Rubin was a lot more honest about Naughty Dog's mistreatment by Universal
I don’t blame them one bit, especially after what happened with the devs for Enter the Dragonfly…
That bellow sound was actually really good, I’m glad the person responsible is this proud of it.
This just goes to show how a much of a timeless classic this franchise is, and how many endless facts can be discovered because of it.
Best game ever.
Mark cerney had some serious foresight when he was working with ps1 games and studios
After the harshness of the Enter the Dragonfly doc, it’s so nice to see some good coming from this Spyro 3 doc! Awesome job! I’d love to see if you could interview Ryan Beveridge who worked alongside Stewart Copeland for YotD since it has the most diverse soundtrack in the series. Maybe in an update/part 2 vid? *wink nudge* lol
This feels like more of a Spyro history in general ratehr than just spyro 3 but I love it and seeing the very first spyro drawing ever done is pretty awesome!
Whoa, I had no idea that the 3rd game was rushed! It’s also neat to see prototype footage, I vaguely remember playing one of the demos at a game store- Seashell Shore- the music was the Enchanted Towers skate park, I think.
*"You Brought A Dragon To Avalar?! I Hate Dragons!"*
I laughed so hard lol! 😂😂😂
It's something that we still don't know somethings about a game after 20 years of it being out, I was really hoping there was going to be a developer comment on the gold fragments and the cut enemy so we could learn more about the purposes. Fantastic that this didn't have bad blood like Spyro 4, Better tune for the whole documentary.
Glad my 2 favourite Spyro content bringers came together for a big collab on Spyro 3.
I've got some content regarding the gold fragments coming fairly soon :)
19:10 The BOATMAN?!
And also Spyro make big steppy
Glad to have another of these the ETD one was class
I never got the sgt byrd dialogue before the fight against spike. actually, I remember the dialogue before bosses often being silent with only a text box. the only consistent speaker was bentley before scorch! "COMBUSTIBLE PROJECTILES!"
I was really looking forward to this and I'm so grateful to see it completed! I love the effort put into these videos and it's obvious the franchise means a lot to you like it does for me. This game has been my special interest since I was literally a toddler so I always feel like I know everything there is to know about it and don't often come across new information about it/cut content/easter eggs/etc that I haven't seen yet so this makes me really happy
That’s really kind of you to say and that you noticed how much Spyro means to me. It really is a special franchise that not many care about its development and inner workings, which is why I suppose I’ve put myself forward to doing so! I hope you like Spyro 4 because I hope to have some very special videos of that coming later in the year. Thanks again.
13:04 The press kit I found on eBay made it in?? That's cool! Still watching through, but this documentary is amazing and very well done so far! Thank you guys so much for all the work you put into this, and HWD's commentary is really good as well!
Yeah! That press kit I noticed too, it actually popped up twice by 2 people but gotten down. I wonder who got it. I hope you enjoy the rest of the video.
@@MrFO1 Yeah, it was great! I wasn't expecting it to be over when I finished watching, and I was sad to see it end. 😅 I really appreciate all that went into this, though!
Is this the final version? Are there more parts? The ending was just super abrupt and caught me off guard lmao. None the less, this was super interesting! Thank you for all the hard work and dedication towards putting this together and contacting everyone
This is the final version, yes. No more parts. The ending was abrupt and I apologize, but the reason it’s like that I’d because I game myself a deadline and needed it done by now, I just would’ve wrote a conclusion bit, but I hope you enjoyed!
Your content continues to be so incredibly done- so well researched, edited and explained, and I really can't understand how you don't have more subscribers. You really deserve them. Thank you so much for this!
HWD IS THE ALMIGHTY!
Who?

CrystalFissure mentions the spiral staircase in one of his videos
Why didn’t TFB have Gregg also reprise as Hunter in Reignited? I mean, Tom Kenny reprised his roles BOTH as Spyro and The Professor.
Gregg is older than Tom, and it seems they wanted to give Hunter a completely brand new actor and voice so that the same VA could continue in future titles, the reason Gregg voiced Ripto is likely because ripto will never return.
That’s interesting. So you think they’re not gonna recycle baddies? @MrFO1
@@MrFO1 I think it might be because Gregg's voice is quite older as you say and they wanted someone who could sound younger, but Ripto can sound older just fine and since Gregg Berger has an iconic voice for it why not keep him
You can tell the very beginning of this video when they show Gregg doing the voice of Hunter, You can definitely tell that his voice has aged And has some more gravelly sound to it. So they probably decide to go with someone who sounded more youthful to voice Hunter, but I still miss him
Another great job on this one, so many new juicy details. Such a unique series, I'm looking forward to seeing what else you've in store!
28:00 Lol, you know that Craig is dedicated to the little details. I’ve played Spyro for over 20 years and never noticed that his wing texture was “wrong”
Yeah Spyro 1 looked fine to me. I always thought that was to make him look younger than his sequel counterparts.
Oh man I've been waiting this a lot! Thanks for this documentary series!
This was such a fun watch! Great job on compiling all of these super compelling interviews with the original developers. Amazing how so many of the voice talent can still play their roles perfectly to this day! Spyro holds a special place in my heart for myself and my dad, he'll be thrilled to watch this, too. Thanks for making it. :)
I wish they would have kept Sheila's boxing gloves. Why didn't the add the Dino mines mini boss to Reignited? Reminds me of how before it was released there was a rumor that Reignited would have additional content. People speculated it would've been behind the new door at the beginning of the 1st game. Obviously nothing happened with that sadly.
These videos are absolutely incredible!!! Needs way more views! I abaolutely love how the sound guy talks so openly, just wow, amazing to listen to this!
I have been waiting for this! Thank you for uploading.
Its Feb 26, 2021 and i am replaying Spyro YOFD for the bajillionth time on Frozen Altar, and enjoying every second of it! Long live Spyro
That big whirlwind to that mysterious island at 21:00 is that in the collectors edition? As a kid i remember activating that whirlwind and going all the way to that island. I had the collectors edition as a kid but now i have the greatest hits version and that whirlwind isn't there.
That footage is a modded version of the game a guy created years ago for demonstration purposes. It’s a shame they didn’t leave the whirlwind in the game though.
That was really interesting, your efforts are much appreciated! Though I'm not sure I got the Back to the Future reference right at the end!
Neil Ross voiced the Museum Narrator in the film.
BearFOXThirty thanks for watching! Neil did the voice of the narrator at the museum. I wanted a conclusion to this video after that clip with a short message, but I ran out of time haha.
"I love dragons and I love bones."
A sentence I’d never thought I’d hear. 😆
Thanks a lot, loved this vid. I know its sooo much effort and it shows, thanks again
I REALLY wish they had a old/new graphics button or option....like halo MCC. I like how good the graphics are in trilogy but everythings just too bright and colour vomiting, the old graphics just have a better vibe nothing to do with nostalgia. Watching this gameplay looks better
Edit: the absense of a sorceress cut scene before the last fight never even being planned. Bittersweet i remember being so dissapointed at the time. As a kid i never realised how rushed most of the 4th world felt they did well with smoke and mirrors (the good kind)
Oh this is such a treat! Thank you!
Now, this is how you do greatness. I was hoping there would be more to this film. But clocking in at 40 minutes is good enough for me. :)
I feel for the guy who designed the cut Summer Forest staircase. You spend all your time and effort getting it to work and then someone removed it. That genuinely frustrated me 😂
Amazing and interesting, as usual. Keep up the good work!
My favorite Spyro game. Do you have more on this?
Hi!!!😀 omg you like Spyro?!?
@@metr0dusk4247 cringe
I've said it once, I'll say it again. Neil Ross is the single greatest upgrade to any video game NPC ever. ❤ And I'm sad he didn't make a comeback for reignited 😔
Love this video and the work you put in!
Thanks for the top tier video :)
I really had no idea how in depth this was gonna be. Good job 👍
Spyro 3 the best game in the series :) . Miss those days 💜
I adore this game so much it's my favourite of all the trilogies and awesome this commentary, and adore end the voice of Neil Ross it's awesome actor and must rewatch again this commentary dude 👏😍🤗💕💙
So, you did not even touch on the fact this was the first and only Spyro game with a guest composer? Ryan Beveridge wrote some of the music (it was almost a collaboration on each track).
That wasn’t important to me throughout putting it together. Not every person who worked on the game could be mentioned, if I did that, the video would be 3 hours long. There’s plenty of interviews I had with developers that were cut from the documentary.
@@MrFO1 Everyone would watch a 3 hour documentary.
NotOrdinaryInGames Okay, brb, making a 3 hour documentary lol.
@@MrFO1 I will wait 3 years for that. Be sure to include Ryan!
@NotOrdinaryInGames not the only one. First one? Yes. But Kenneth and Peter Neff worked with Copeland on Enter the Dragonfly music, they just go uncredited in the final.
Damn, the original Moneybags design is nightmarish. I wonder what Mike Gollum thinks about Naughty Dog's crunch culture.
At the time, working with Naughty Dog didn't seem any different than working on the live action and animated television series I had done previously. When you love what you do and you're having fun making a game, the hard work doesn't feel that hard. That's how crunch culture perpetuates itself. There is always someone or a team of people willing to work that hard.
Legendary quality like the rest your videos. Great job lad!
Thanks for the dokumentary and the work you put in its interisting too know new material 20 years later thats awesome ✌🏻
The beta music for Bamboo Terrace has a removed vocal audio which features in Dynasty Warriors 4 soundtrack.
Obsessed with these Documentaries, absolutely love them! Amazing job once again!!
Hi, Mr. Fo1! There's something about the documentary that confused me a bit. It says here that Andrew Dawson was the guy who voiced Aku Aku (the OOGA BOOGA sound from the early games). I remember about 6 or 5 years ago, David Siller, the producer of Crash 1, said that he did the voice for Aku Aku and another character called Papu Papu.
I want to include this info in the Crash Bandicoot encyclopedia, but there are two infos that contradicts each other.
I don’t believe I was ever able to find info on the person Mike Gollum said voiced Aku Aku, so unfortunately I can’t provide anymore info. It may have been the person he stated or he may have been misremembering since it was decades ago but Mike was heavily involved with Crash & Spyro.
Wouldn't the unused Dragon be a plot hole in spyro 3? considering dragons were banished from the forgotten realms by the sorceress
probably why they scrapped him
Omg such underrated video! Loved it!
amazing documentary, really fun watch :)
What was the Evening lake mini boss? The yeti in Frozen altars or the fire dragons in Fireworks factory?
I dunno why but I think maybe the whale? That would’ve been interesting, a boss fight within a Homeworld.
Oh wait now I know what you mean, I had to reread the comment. Yeah I think it’s the dragons from fireworks factory.
Look at Spyro's eyes at the beginning! He looks high as f*ck 😂
My favorite spyro game
Amazing documentary
It's actually really fascinating to actually see the "behind the scenes" type of thing for one of my favorite games.
Y'know because really, alot of work goes into these and people don't really realize it.
Great job!
Will there be a documentary on spyro the dragon and riptos rage
No.
The greatest of all time
Woo new documentary
I like that cyclop gnorc
I thought it was Agent 9 that was supposed to be a pig? Was Canadian Guy Eh wrong about that?
Were the deleted enemies in spyro 2 would've reside?
Theres some things about these games that the remakes got so very, very wrong.
Unfortunately, you’re right. I totally agree.
such as? I haven't played them so I'm curious
The overall tone (of Reignited) is so disappointing. Those are great games on their own and they mostly play better, but they're so disappointing as remakes because of certain decisions, I find it very difficult to play them. And they don't quite have the sophistication of the originals anyway...
Love so much your documentaries! Perfect research and efforts, maybe you could do one about a Crash game? Crash Twinsanity has the most interesting development cycle
Don't get me wrong, you obviously put a lot of time into the video and I have to admit I couldn't do something like this big and the video is amazing!
But why do you have to use 16:9 gameplay videos which is also stretched? Just use 4:3 or 16:9 widehack. But 16:9 stretched just looks awful. Again, don't get me wrong!
The gameplay used is from a walkthrough channel, simply because I don’t have the tools to record gameplay at the moment unfortunately. But, I think it looks great in this format, I just wouldn’t want a black background, so I think it’s worth pushing the limits in the emulator to make it larger than normal. But thank you for your question :)
i wanna see the stair
Mr.fistus is real CT
I would have appreciated it if they didnt have MoneyBags come back. That was a bad move to bring him back.
I can't get over those Amish dolphin riders 😂😂😂😂
