Regency bodices can sometimes have that really narrow back piece, the aim was a kite shape, so the back seams wouldn't always come where we expect, especially because they didn't really close gowns at the centre back at all. Also, it is definitely historically ok to have 1 big 'front' piece, especially if the gown closed at the centre front, rather than having a drop front. I think Angela was trying to approach the pattern from a more historical point of view. I also remember her writing in a blog post about leaving the darts unmarked because she then shaped them actually on her mock up.

@@moth.faerie the shape of the kite piece was more historically correct and had a more correct waist height in the back, the back of the waist shouldn't be below the front of the waist and often a wee bit higher. Bridgerton doesn't follow any of those, though.
@@brinagotsued Bridgerton's gowns are a bit weird, the empire waist is very low for the regency probably for the modern bras, I've made a few historical patterns now [the janet arnold one, a truly victorian one and another one I can't remember the name of] and they have teeny diamond back pieces the side seams of them are curved and the bands across the front are often covered with an apron front, so you have two narrow bands that cross the bust and allow you to lace it shut, then you pull up and pin the apron, once you've made a few of them it becomes childsplay but the shapes are weird and the sleeves are set really far back [because the stays pull your shoulders back so you can hold a pencil between the blades it feels] they did miss a trick though not doing actual regency court gowns because they are a delight, empire gowns with panniers - they looked like old lady knitted toilet roll covers, with half an ostritch worth of feathers to try and balance the gown, Eloise's complaints would have made so much more sense
i really find the mockup vids SUPER helpful, honestly its more of a realistic look at sewing because not everything goes right on the first try. i sometimes have trouble diagnosing fit issues so its cool to be able to cross-reference someone else if they face the same issue and see how they fix it
I absolutely appreciate these kinds of videos! Something I've always found frustrating is how often patterns or tutorials say to do a mockup, but don't show any of the steps needed to fix any issues. The jump from "check to make sure it fits here and here, and adjust pattern accordingly" or whatever, so these deep dives are super helpful! 🤘

I rlly like watching the mockup trials because I like hearing you speak and reason things out. I talk myself theough the whole process of sewing anything and seeing the demonstration of the fit issues you notice while you talk about it helps me understand better what a "good fit" actually looks like. also, mockups are such a pain and i don't like them most of the time, so it's super motivating to see one done lmao, it feels less herculean
The V&A museum has a few examples of regency gowns which closed in the back with lacing. So you could go that route if you wanted to. Other common back closures include ties, hooks and eyes, and buttons.
I like the mock-up videos. I'm not very good at telling how and where to alter things to adjust fit, so hearing what you have to say and seeing the mock-up is helpful.

I was just thinking how much I love watching your mockup processes and was wondering if anyone found them as interesting as I do before you mentioned that others did as well. I'm wondering if the difference between the comments and the analytics is due the difference between dedicated subscribers and casual viewers. I imagine your subscribers are those who have a greater interest in sewing, therefore are more interested in the mockup process. Whereas a casual viewer might be more interested in just seeing the end product.

somehow, fortuitously, I had started planning my bridgerton gown about a week before you posted the redthreaded regency stays video, and I was shooketh because in my planning I scoured the internet for my stays and gown patterns and I also landed on the redthreaded stays and Angela's bodice pattern. I say it was fortuitous because I am pretty new to this costuming journey and you using the same patterns I picked means I can learn from you as i go 😅 luckily I found Angela's pattern fit me almost perfectly over the stays and shift. the only thing I've adjusted is I brought down the back a little bit, as in the show the gowns seems to have quite low backs. anyways, amazing video as always, I truly learn so much from you and as a somewhat novice I was happy to see that we both landed on the same patterns, it makes me feel like I'm doing something right! 😅
Mock up videos are always great to watch. Seeing how to alter a pattern to fix fit issues is fascinating and teaches me so much because you don't always do what I would originally think would work.
The puffy sleeve is so cute, I love sleeves like that. The fitting videos are very useful I find fitting the most difficult and important part of the sewing process so seeing you solve all those issues helps a lot.

Watching a professionally trained sewist work with mock-ups is something I am definitely here for. And the video takes up however much time it needs - kind of like the mock-up process itself. Worry not. You were smashing two patterns together - a mind-bend at the best of times. I finished my first belt - linearly embossed black veg tan, with a red leather lining, double belt keepers and hand-stitched on my stitching pony. First time in years that I've had a belt that actually fits properly. I may have ordered some really lovely brass belt buckles from the ebay to help scratch the belt itch. As for the rest of the world? As the potted petunia from Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy said "oh no, not again". The anti-mask protesters are back in Ottawa - this time it's around 1000 fully patched bikers. Tomorrow is suppose to be the last day of their protests. Can't wait until they leave. More charitable views than mine say that they're busy being counter-culture. Personally, I think the helmet should be reduced to a pile of rust... Apparently this iteration of a 'Bike club for Veterans" makes them sign a pledge to behave properly to people. Guess it didn't cover vintage WW2 Germain helmets... The girlfriend who climbed on the back of the bike was 20-30 years younger. So the ick factor just piles... Thanks for the safe wish. Right now the bikers seem to be sticking to their original plan of heading on home. Bye. Please let the door hit you on the way out...
Mock-up videos are some of my favorites since it shows how to fix issues that might pop up, also if it's a bridgerton party, back zippers were good enough for the actresses so no one can blame you for having one lol
may i suggest that in your mock_up videos that on each one you do a zoom in on one of the aspects that needs changing and help us understand: how you knew that it wasn't right, how you decided how to alter it to make it right and how you had to take that in to consideration in the rest of the pattern... i'm guessing that that is the process (more or less) but having a zoom into one of the modifications might be helpfull... (all of them would be too time consuming , technical, tedious, overwhelming... but a quick tutorial on "this sleve doesn't look right, why, how to fix it"... would be great for me and possibly others). I like mock-up videos. It helps me know how to figure out what to alter and how. I made Angela’s Queen’s Gambit dress, and I had similar issues with fitting. I ended up changing a lot, and then only wore the dress once. It’s a shame, but I don’t really blame her for not going to the trouble of grading her Patreon patterns out.

Thank you! A flipper bone is a little steel bone in a casing stitched to a neckline that you tuck into your support garment so they stay nicely stuck to your body and don’t shift 😊 I’m not actually sure that I’ll need them for this tho now that I’ve made the actual dress, and I explain them a bit better in my video making my Jude Duarte gown
a flipper bone is a short bone (just normal flat steel) in a casing that is stitched to the gown neckline at one end so the other end can be tucked inside the undergarment and keep everything nicely together
Overall, Angela does have cute patterns, but I left her Paetron because the patterns just do not fit small band/large bra cup well and modification to fit warp everything else so bad it’s worthless.
