That Elizabethan Bodice Generator brings back so many memories. I used it, (or an earlier version of it) circa 1999 to make my very first renfaire bodice. I had zero sewing training and still managed to make a decent enough "pair of bodies" that some of the staff thought I was an employee. Sure, there are better resources for beginners now, but back then it was a miraculous find and helped me get started down the path of historical costuming and then, later on, cosplay. =)
ah no I definitely dont think it's bad by any means and I definitely appreciate that it was around when there was such a lack of resources 20 years ago! I would just worry that it might put a beginner off of corset and stay making and that would be sad when there are a lot of comprehensive and more instructional patterns available now!
oh, i love how these turned out! i've glanced at that elizabethan generator a few times and always wondered how it worked as a base. good to know that it's decent! glad you and baby bat are coordinated now!
Love the addition of the pointed ears, it all looks so cute! The green binding tape around the edges was such a great addition, I really like the subtle color change. I totally get the burn out when doing a project of that size. Hopefully that spark ignites again, definitely don't force it.

I always love watching your new videos. They're so joyous, and it always makes me want to sew something myself. The stays came out really well and I love the little pop of green.
I’m actually in the middle of using this pattern to make a pair of ren faire stays! I just finished my first cardboard mockup and it turned out pretty well, if a tad large.
ah thats great! i'd love to see what you're working on! if you post on instagram please tag me 😊 and at least large you can alter to be smaller, def easier than trying to add fabric back in or recutting 😅
It always amazes me how these fractions of measurements somehow come together as a pattern. Beautiful work. As always. As for me, I'm fully committed to the leatherworking-shaped rabbit hole I fell into over the holidays. I'm practicing by making some tool rolls. Then I get to try out making belts that actually fit and don't cost the moon. - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi
Right!! I’m usually more lax with those 1/8” increments on something loose like a chemise but with tight fitting clothes it makes such a difference. How is the leather working going?? I want to get back to it hopefully soon! Tool rolls sound like a great idea
@@moth.faerie Those 1/8"'s are everything. Sneaky little measurements... The leather work is going good. I'm at the flailing about stage. Apparently I enjoy splashing about in the shallow end of the pool? It's one of those things where it's both easier than it looks and harder. But the tool rolls are my starting point. Because I found all of these vintage tools on the ebay (the Singer is a 99K from 1915, so spot the trend). And now I want them to look spectacular while they are kept safe for another 100 years of use... My theory is that tool rolls are the chance to show off what you've learned. And an excuse to practice one's saddle stich. And a way to physically limit how many more tools I can buy. Because I've bought enough... I'm doing one role for the carving tools - including the knife and stylus. The back of the design is a chance to practice some Sheridan Style flowers and Acanthus leaves. With a great big Sunflower incorporated into the design in honour of Ukraine. The second one is basically a three-fold-up, up-sized version of a Hussif for the awls, and edgers, and round knife and the other nice toys. I've got God Kids to indoctrinate, I mean, invite, into leatherwork. It's amazing how far a good tool roll will get you into the conversation... Hope you Kids are doing well down there.
My inner goth is flailing over the velvet stays, so lovely! Also just wanted to say I genuinely enjoy all your videos, so however works best for you to release projects I am happy with. I am enjoying the current mix of big project and smaller ones, there's the instant gratification of seeing the finished garment straight away in the smaller projects, plus there's also the anticipation in the background for the big one!
I remember sitting in on a panel, years and years ago, about how to make corsets, which was mostly about materials, but this vid was so fun and helped me understand how the pieces worked together. Thanks
Oh these are so beautiful!! I really have to learn how to make stays and corsets! For living history and modern use. But I can barely handle a sewing machine and I'm not sure if I'm up for hand stitching that :D So probably will have to wait until I have time to learn how to use a sewing machine better. As excited I am to see the finished "Frau", I totally understand that you need a break from it. Take it and focus on things that bring you more joy :)
@@moth.faerie Ok, they look super difficult to make, but it's probably mainly because I have no experience with boned garments. And at least there are no stretchy fabrics involved :D
I loved the video, very good review. I'm personally battling regency stays (laughing moon pattern and before a few self drafted versions) and I can't get them to sit right so if you are planning on making stays for your regency outfit that would be perfect timing. If not I'm still going to happily watch the construction of the gown itself. And watching tailoring is always like listening to poetry
I hope this doesn't sound weird, but I love your videos so much! I discovered you about a week ago and have BINGED all of your videos. I am kind of sad that I'm out of videos to watch now, they are so informational and relaxing at the same time!
I found you yesterday and now have watched all your Alice and Frau videos lol. In addition to being an amazing costumer, you're such a great filmmaker. I'm glad you'll take care not to burn yourself out on the huge project and do these "small" projects for a while - I don't think most people would call such cool corsets small but go on :)
oh this is so pretty!! (i know i say this like every video but the colours and fabrics are very beautiful). i'd like to make a pair of stays too someday, but not sure if i'm brave enough to try the generator. we'll see in the summer when i have time... and getting burnt out on Frau,, i can imagine, because it's so much work. just take your time and do whatever seems the best idea to you, the "small" projects are also great to watch!
haha i still appreciate it even if it's repetitive! I would definitely start with a pattern that is a little more comprehensive than the pattern generator, if you're willing to purchase a pattern the butterick one I mentioned and used in the renfaire corset video and redthreaded's stays patterns are pretty good!
thank you! yes definitely trying to make more things that are either more interchangeable to make more varied fantasy outfits or more every day wearable!
Your comment of cottage core/cottage goth reminded me - I discovered a thing called goblincore the other day?! Amazing, a style I didn't know I needed. 🙃 I love the green fabric you used!
You're so clear with the pattern drafting! I'm kind of just getting started on my whole journey and my overeager self wants to jump straight into self-drafting a corset. Mayyybe I should learn how to alter an existing pattern first? Nah, you make it look like so much fun so I guess I'm going for it! XD
haha if you have the confidence for it i would say go for it! you'll only get better with practice 😊 if you have any questions please feel free to ask!
@@moth.faerie I actually do have a question (more related to my attempt at Red Threaded's 1750-1770's Georgian Stays though)! I realized that I need to increase the waist by about 4" since my waist is in a different size but I am having troubles visualizing how to go about it. I originally was pivoting at the bust to add space at some of the seams but I think that changes the hip measurement (which fits me as is)? Do you have any techniques or advice for this pattern alteration?
@@SewlockHolmes hm i'm not sure i 100% understand what you're saying but hopefully i can help anyways! depending on where you need the extra width you can add to all the seams evenly or just split it between a couple seams where you need more space, but either way - figure out what seams you're changing and divid your 4" (2" for half the pattern) between those seams. then measure that directly out from the waist, and blend your bust and hip lines up into that mark
@@moth.faerie That makes a lot of sense, thank you! (I totally forgot that half a pattern means 2" not 4" lol. There's little bit of re-adjusting in my future XD)
@@moth.faerie I love seeing the pattern change to fit what the wearer needs and wants! It’s so helpful to see it happen because I’m such a visual learner!
Ah I'm glad I've helped you find inspiration! I have a masters in costume production from CMU School of Drama, but my undergrad degree was actually neuroscience! The costume production degree is a three year program so we had three years of costume history, plus most of my sewing classes had quite a bit of historical context so even though my schooling wasn't actually in historical costuming I got a really good background from various different professors. I also took design classes which were optional for my focus but I've always been interested in design! Tbh it was STRESSFUL and previously coming from the medical/pharmacy field it felt kind of silly that everyone treated show deadlines as so life or death when we really weren't doing anything so dire or urgent that we should have been sacrificing our sleep and general well-being for it, but that was the really pervasive attitude. However, despite all of that, it was a massive fast track in learning all about costume production, design, and history. I don't doubt that I would have learned most of the skills I got from grad school along the way of a costuming career, but it would have taken decades rather than three years. If you have any specific questions or context feel free to keep asking or if you don't want to like.. broadcast your location/school etc feel free to message me on instagram!
I love these!! I made very similiar pair of stays out of blue velvet I salvages from an old shirt over the holidays! I love the way velvet looks! I modified the butterrisk B4669 pattern. I'm addictd to making stays/laced bodices!
I just found you! Will definitely stick around! I loved seeing your entire process, the editing was beautiful but not too flawless (as in, you didn't edit out mistakes in the making process - it's helpful for us to see your mistakes so we can learn, so thank you!) and can't wait to see what else you're up to!
Hey amazing lady! Your channel is amazing and I'm learning so much about sewing from it! I have a question on sewing this. When you sew your lining together, do you sew it a bit smaller than the outside fabric of the stays so that it doesn't bubble? If so, how much smaller do you usually sew it?
Thanks! Yes I sew the lining slightly smaller but like just barely - so like if you have your stitch lines marked on both the lining and outer fabric, I sew slightly to the outside of the line of the outer fabric and slightly to the inside of the line of the lining
For something like this where I’m working in the ease for the whole piece at once I do a little more, when I’m doing the easing on one panel at a time for a multi paneled garment I’ll do what I explained in the other comment
@@moth.faerie Thanks so much! I'm sewing some stays for my sister for a renaissance faire and while I can pattern things and sew, stays are new to me. Thank you again!!!
I mean this in the best way, the stays and your conclusion outfit make you look like a spring goth hobbit and I absolutely love it! The stays are so aesthetic all in all👏
I really liked seeing your thought process as you adjusted the pattern! Maybe if you combine the stays with a dark green/lacy skirt, it might look a bit more cottagecore and a bit less oktoberfest? Anyway, I love the result!
I think it came out beautiful. Not like a slytherin Oktoberfest at all 😂 Also, I personally will watch whatever you put out. Take your time with the long projects :) it's much harder to enjoy the process of something if you feel like you're pushing it. Please enjoy it :)
This is so gorgeous! But, how have I been sewing for two decades, and doing sewing historical clothing for ages, and never realized that flat lining trick? I kind of want to try making more corsets now - but I kind of suck at them. haha (And I already have more projects lined up than I can get done.)
I was a little confused when you were talking about that second step in flatlining (18:53). Are you tacking the seam allowance down while it's folded over so you can stitch the seams by hand?
Not to stitch the seams by hand but yes to tacking the seam allowance down! I try to grab on both sides of the stitching line so I can make sure there’s enough extra fabric at the stitching line
I love how this looks and it's exactly what I'm looking for but it looks scary because I don't have that much patterning experience. Maybe I'll still try it if I'm feeling daring...
you should definitely give it a try! the butterick pattern I mentioned also makes a fairly similar shape, though it's a little shorter than these. that's a fairly quick pattern alteration to make tho!
I love watching these videos- its helping me make my first corset! Also, I’m assuming this isn’t stretch velvet. I wonder if you can use stretch and if that would like cause more issues or if would help prevent the need to cut the velvet pieces to be larger than the coutil? You could just stretch it?
i'm glad it's helping! i would avoid using stretch velvet if possible, but i think if you were to use it anyways you should pretend it's regular velvet and still roll pin it otherwise it may stretch unevenly
HI Minji! I'm thinking about using this pattern generator to make a new pair of stays for Faire this year, and am wondering if there are negatives to making this corset in one piece as the "pattern" indicates as opposed to splitting it into 2/3 pieces. Is it just a matter of how it's been done historically, or are there other benefits to splitting the pattern (grainline, boning, shaping?) that I'm not aware of? The end result you made turned out just lovely.
i think probably the grain will end up quite off towards the back of the pattern so you'll end up with bias at the back where the lacing is (and all through the body of the stays) which means that the lacing won't be as stable
Love learning from you! Thanks so much for making these videos! Where do you get your grommets from? (I'm trying to source true to size 1/4" hole diameter antique bronze grommets and washers in quantities larger than 50 pieces in a pack and without setting tools so I can finish my corset belt.) Thank you!
First off love your videos, so soothing and informative. I'm making ren bodices and this has given me so much inspiration and idead. And omg where did you find your mushroom sweater!
ah thank you! yess if you post any of your work i'd love to see it, please tag me if you post on ig! i'm minjalinjee on there too 😊 my sweater is from carmico!
I'm also wondering about your Totoro sweater. When I noticed them on your sleeve, I internally squeed! ^-^ Also, thank you for the info in this video. There are a lot of details in here that I haven't found in other corset-making videos that I've watched.
I love love love your videos!! I think I've binged all of them 💕 would you be able to tell me the model of your juki? I've broken my home sewing singer machine for the last time, I think.. 😅
Thank you! Yess I specifically went and bought a giant tin of popcorn bc I wanted the pretty red tin rather than finding just a tin on the internet haha
Lovely video! I've spent hours researching grommet machines, ugh, did you do the same before you bought the one from CS Osborne? Are you 100% happy with it? Thanks so much:) Beautiful work.
This is what I want my every day clothes I want to make my wardrobe to be Goth the only thing is I have hot flashes so most of the clothes will be in thin fabric plus I have a belly that looks like I am having a baby but it is my weak belly muscles
Ive really been wanting to make lightly boned stays but i dont know where to put all the boning. Is there any recommended techniques for me? recommended beginner patterns?
i would start with a pattern that already has it marked out! butterick 4254 is a good one as well as redthreaded's stays patterns. I wouldnt necessarily follow their instructions and maybe try to find one that does things a little more historically accurate or a couture instruction but both those patterns are good!
it was basically just bias tape! the cutting I was doing was just trimming it down so it could get around the curve easier. I cut it on the cross grain but because it was a stretch satin it was essentially the same as normal bias tape but a little fussier!
I love your videos! I was wondering where you got your grommet press? And what is the brand? I’ve found a few that have gotten bad reviews and would love to have one (I can’t use the little, “manual” ones.).
Hey I have a question how do you attach the stomacher? Or do you not insert it and only tuck it in before binding the front? If so how to you make it stable? ☺️☺️
And my ribs stick out like a ( A ) shape and it is hard to get my bust number, and waist number, I have to take my under bust as my waist because my belly is 50 or 60 on different days
I feel like you hit half way between CottageGoth and HobbitGoth and I *Adore that* I think it's the HobbitGoth that's giving the octoberfest vibes, mainly because hobbits are all about layering and food and drink and making merry. But it's really lovely. Seriously. Also! I love that you're wearing the chemise you made, it's so pretty and works perfectly for this. Is the lace scratchy? I'm always terrified of scratchy lace, which is why I've avoided many a lace thing so far.
ooooh hobbitgoth, that's a good one!! the really big lace is a little scratchy but thats kind of my own fault for how i digitized it 😅 but it's not scratchy enough that i notice it when i'm wearing it! just when i'm putting it on

I am enjoying the current mix of big project and smaller ones, there's the instant gratification of seeing the finished garment straight away in the smaller projects, plus there's also the anticipation in the background for the big one!
thank you so much for your sweet comment and for watching! i'm glad the mix of long and short projects is still fun to watch 😊
It turned out amazing, I love the green fabric! 😍 I cant wait to make my own pair of stays.
thank you so much! ah if you make your own and share them anywhere please tag me!
Oooooh these are so cute! Thanks for trying out all these patterns, doing the lord's work with this series 😊❤️
Haha thank youu it definitely also benefits myself in the future so I can work quicker at picking out the right pattern!
Interesting, I might test that patter generation as well. And you void is awesome!
Wow, gorgeous work!!! Definitely goals.
I remember sitting in on a panel, years and years ago, about how to make corsets, which was mostly about materials, but this vid was so fun and helped me understand how the pieces worked together. Thanks
aw thank you I'm glad it was helpful!
You always look like a woodland spirit at the end! These were so pretty!
aah thank you so much what a great compliment 💕
Oh these are so beautiful!! I really have to learn how to make stays and corsets! For living history and modern use. But I can barely handle a sewing machine and I'm not sure if I'm up for hand stitching that :D So probably will have to wait until I have time to learn how to use a sewing machine better.
As excited I am to see the finished "Frau", I totally understand that you need a break from it. Take it and focus on things that bring you more joy :)
ah yeah it's definitely much faster to do it with a machine, but corsets aren't that difficult once you figure out the machine!
@@moth.faerie Ok, they look super difficult to make, but it's probably mainly because I have no experience with boned garments. And at least there are no stretchy fabrics involved :D
Watching you draft the pattern was mesmerizing
I loved the video, very good review. I'm personally battling regency stays (laughing moon pattern and before a few self drafted versions) and I can't get them to sit right so if you are planning on making stays for your regency outfit that would be perfect timing. If not I'm still going to happily watch the construction of the gown itself. And watching tailoring is always like listening to poetry
yes regency stays are coming soon! going to do the whole chemise, drawers, stays, gown and also Micah's outfit!
I hope this doesn't sound weird, but I love your videos so much! I discovered you about a week ago and have BINGED all of your videos. I am kind of sad that I'm out of videos to watch now, they are so informational and relaxing at the same time!
ah not weird at all thats so nice of you to say! thank you so much!
Wow Minji..these look beautiful. The colour is so rich and luxurious and suit you so well. Awesome job…🥰🇦🇺
thank you so much!
Loving this corset series
ah I"m glad you like it! thank you for watching!
Wow I’m so happy I just found this channel. This was SO good.
Also your cat is adorable please tell her I love her.
ah thank you so much, haha will give her the message she's definitely the star of my videos 😊❤
I found you yesterday and now have watched all your Alice and Frau videos lol. In addition to being an amazing costumer, you're such a great filmmaker. I'm glad you'll take care not to burn yourself out on the huge project and do these "small" projects for a while - I don't think most people would call such cool corsets small but go on :)
aw thank you so much! ah haha i only call them small because they take less time than the pieces with a ton of detail 😅
oh this is so pretty!!
As a beginner- this looks very intimidating lol. I love the look though! Its beautiful❤
This is so pretty 😍 i want to learn how to make corsets and stays. I'm a bit scared, but your video is very motivating ☺️
thank you! they're definitely not as scary as the internet seems to make them out to be! you can do it!
Fascinating. Take your time with Frau
thank you!
So gorgeous!
Loving the everyday wearable corsets/stays.
thank you! yes definitely trying to make more things that are either more interchangeable to make more varied fantasy outfits or more every day wearable!
Oh wow that turned out well! Thank you for the tips on the turn of the fabric on velvet!
Thank you! I’m glad it was helpful!
Very pretty! It reminds me of Briar Rose’s peasant outfit.
YES i thought the same thing when I put it on haha, maybe i should make that outfit sometime
Your comment of cottage core/cottage goth reminded me - I discovered a thing called goblincore the other day?! Amazing, a style I didn't know I needed. 🙃 I love the green fabric you used!
aah i was in a goblincore facebook group for a little bit! it's so much fun!
These are SO CUTE! Too bad I didn't see this earlier would've been great sew along to my kirtle short stay franken thing I'm working on. Heh
I have a couple other stays videos! haha but sorry this one didnt come out sooner
I'm really excited for the Bridgerton project, and I would put these stays in the mosscore category, which I love.
oooh mosscore thats a good term, i'll have to make a pinterest board haha
I love how your videos are instructional *and* ASMR. 😊
The bodice looks great! It's funny how jus a tiny 1/8th of an inch make such a difference
Aw thank you so much! And yeah ah 1/8 over a bunch of seams Changes a lot! Precision is sooo important with corsets bc there’s so many seams
This is so informative! I love it! It is so interesting to see the process of adjusting the pattern to what you want! I'm loving this series!!!!!!!!
ah thank you I'm glad it is informative and helpful!
@@moth.faerie I love seeing the pattern change to fit what the wearer needs and wants! It’s so helpful to see it happen because I’m such a visual learner!
Love that velvet and lining combination!
it is!
omg baby bat sounds like a bird at the end!! she's so cute i love her meows
Oh my. These are SO. STINKIN. CUTE! Beautifully executed. Now I'm gonna check out what your Frau project is cause you just got me curious. :)
I love these!! I made very similiar pair of stays out of blue velvet I salvages from an old shirt over the holidays! I love the way velvet looks! I modified the butterrisk B4669 pattern. I'm addictd to making stays/laced bodices!
ooh i've been meaning to make a set of stays from that pattern! haha i totally feel you, I've been going through grommets and boning like crazy
I just found you! Will definitely stick around! I loved seeing your entire process, the editing was beautiful but not too flawless (as in, you didn't edit out mistakes in the making process - it's helpful for us to see your mistakes so we can learn, so thank you!) and can't wait to see what else you're up to!
Aw thank you for watching! I’m glad you liked it!
thank you for the tipp with the velvet!
Please please PLEASE upload your pattern in particular! I LOVEEEE your design!
The stays are so aesthetic all in all👏
Omg haha I love that!
Really like how this stay turned out. And those colors are indeed a perfect fit to your baby. :}
thank you! yesss i love matching baby bat!
I really liked seeing your thought process as you adjusted the pattern! Maybe if you combine the stays with a dark green/lacy skirt, it might look a bit more cottagecore and a bit less oktoberfest? Anyway, I love the result!
ooh thats a good idea, thank you!
Glad you are taking a break when you need it.
First time visiting your channel I just subscribed love the vibe
I love this and your cat is so beautiful 😍
thank you! she's very pretty i love her
I just like watching you work!
aw thank you!
I'm so curious about your table surface and how you're able to stick pins in it.
It’s homasote under butcher paper and a fabric backdrop 😊
I think it came out beautiful. Not like a slytherin Oktoberfest at all 😂
Also, I personally will watch whatever you put out. Take your time with the long projects :) it's much harder to enjoy the process of something if you feel like you're pushing it. Please enjoy it :)
ah haha thank you I appreciate that 😅 thank you for the reassurance too! I'm glad you're willing to stick through all the randomness with the videos 😊
Of course. You make beautiful things, you explain things well, and you're fun to watch. Thank you for making videos to share 🖤
This is so gorgeous!
But, how have I been sewing for two decades, and doing sewing historical clothing for ages, and never realized that flat lining trick? I kind of want to try making more corsets now - but I kind of suck at them. haha (And I already have more projects lined up than I can get done.)
You’ll only get better if you practice! But I feel that on too many projects to already finish haha
@@moth.faerie Oh, after 7ish corsets/stays, I don't really have the lack of practice excuse any more. hahah
They look great! i would love to see you try the Augusta stays pattern by Scroop Patterns
I've been meaning to try those out! I'm going to try one more free stays pattern first then maybe I'll do that one!
This turned out sooo good!
It looks very comfy☺️
I buy grommets from wawak.com, I think they’re the size 00 😊
@@moth.faerie thanks so much!! I'll check it out.
Also, thank you for the info in this video. There are a lot of details in here that I haven't found in other corset-making videos that I've watched.
I love love love your videos!! I think I've binged all of them 💕 would you be able to tell me the model of your juki? I've broken my home sewing singer machine for the last time, I think.. 😅
Aw thank you so much! It’s a ddl 8700 😊
It’s so pretty!
thank you!
Absolutely gorgeous!
thank you!
Is there a specific pattern or two you *would* recommend for a beginner or first stays/corset project?
Very nice but, how to do it for people who have a lot of bust thanks😢
WOW, it`s gorgeous
Utterly delightful thank you!
thank you for watching!
I'm interested in how you did the edging! I've always just done bias tape. It looked like that first but then it was cut along the curves?
it was basically just bias tape! the cutting I was doing was just trimming it down so it could get around the curve easier. I cut it on the cross grain but because it was a stretch satin it was essentially the same as normal bias tape but a little fussier!
Very pretty 😀
OMG waitttt the Coffee Emporium mug, are you from Cincy?? Corset came out great btw
Yeah I grew up in Cincinnati!
What a great creation I love it !!
yep! It's part of my witch series from last october!
I love your videos! I was wondering where you got your grommet press? And what is the brand? I’ve found a few that have gotten bad reviews and would love to have one (I can’t use the little, “manual” ones.).
It's cs Osborne brand from wawak.com 😊
@@moth.faerie thank you so much!
Your hungry babies are preciousss
these are stunning! what type of fabric do you use for your stays?
i use coutil and for this one the outer is velvet and inner is cotton sateen
did you cut the pattern with the back on the fold to get the lace up on the front? (i hope that made sense lol)
Where do you get all your embroidered sweaters? They look so cozy
the ghibli one is from hot topic, the mushroom one is from an artist called carmico!
Hey I have a question how do you attach the stomacher? Or do you not insert it and only tuck it in before binding the front? If so how to you make it stable? ☺️☺️
I just slide it in, the tension makes it stable!
@@moth.faerie ah thx so much😇
And my ribs stick out like a ( A ) shape and it is hard to get my bust number, and waist number, I have to take my under bust as my waist because my belly is 50 or 60 on different days
These are stunning! Do you do commisions at all?
thank you! I don't do commissions, sorry! French Meadows has really beautiful stays for sale!
Oooh I love these!! 😍
thank you!
I feel like you hit half way between CottageGoth and HobbitGoth and I *Adore that*
I think it's the HobbitGoth that's giving the octoberfest vibes, mainly because hobbits are all about layering and food and drink and making merry.
