Another great video Keith. One tip for your ultrasonic cleaner is that you can fill it with plain water then use the cleaner of your choice and put your parts in a jar. The ultrasonic will transmit through the jar and your cleaner doesn't have a mess when you are done. A tip I got from Steve's small engine saloon channel.
Very interesting project and so much helpful information. Your video work is excellent. Yep.. I had a chuckle with that tiny clip of your camera tipping over. All part of the fun!
Keith, I just replaced my head gasket. Between 5&6 cylinders, there was a piece of gasket blown away. It was the smaller strip that was blown. It’s all backup and running and the engine per’s on for another day. Glad hat you will be making videos of your engine projects.
I've repaired one of these temp gauges after it got siezedin the head by quickly soldering on a donor bulb that has been kept in the freezer, been good for a year now. It's tricky but certainly doable.
@@keithsgarage5831 It seems like the solder joint held up, used some copper tubing as a sleeve to butt the ends of the tubes. You can keep the ether filled bulb in a jar of ice water to keep it from evaporating while you flow the solder, it was a real surprise to see it work again. I was kinda skeptical but i couldent afford a replacement.
It is possible to maybe have that crack welded. Years ago my local auto parts store told me about a shop that did that. They heat them cherry red and weld them. The one I know of is in Nevada, Iowa but that business did say there were some others around the country.
Keith great info and video I what to double check part numbers before I order i ended up with manifold kit for 23'' Could you give me the part numbers for head gasket and manifolds .Have to do valve job I have a 1939 P7 25'' no hump or bypass engine Thanks Brian
Looks like someone tried to take the ridge off the top of the cylinders and ended up with a taper so the two close cylinders have a real reduced amount of material between cylinders so probably why the gasket is showing carbon as not enough sealing surface now. Reminds me of my 1950 Plymouth flathead six I had as a 17 year old kid.
Hi keith, nice video. What do you think the problem on the foot starter if you step in it and stuck? It doesn’t go down. Car usually start. Please respond 😊 thanks Ed from Los Angeles.

Hey I have 49 Plymouth special deluxe I think the head gaskets blown it over heated bc the last owner didn't wire up the fan correctly it was my first time driving it after buying it wouldn't start till I had a mechanic come hot wire it and mess with the distributor it never had water in the oil but did start weird after that if the key was in a funny position it would keep engaging the starter my son blocked the Plymouth in the driveway for about a month or two so I was not able to drive it but after it had water in the oil I don't know if it is the head gasket or not but could the water distribution tube in the motor or bad water pump gasket cause this issue it started a few times with one coming out of tailpipe still drove just rough start the first time and after it was ok motor just Shaked and starter acted fine after initial start I only drove her once or twice a week for a few miles I can't find a mechanic to help me fix it so I'm going it on my own I have the book im pretty knowledgeable about cars and mechanic work but not good at timing chan's or setting a motor any info would help me out so much it's only got 43k miles on it don't want to ruin the motor my first antique too in pretty good condition glad I found your videos very thorough and informative if you know anyone in new Orleans that could help that would be great thanx from the bayou
I have over 100 videos uploaded. You should endeavor to watch them all. You will learn a ton. Water distribution tube or water pump gasket will not allow coolant to enter the crankcase. So its not those. Perform a compression test. Two siamese'd adjoining cylinders with lower compression is a sign of a failed head gasket. Water coming out the exhaust pipe is not a sign of a failed head gasket. Moisture (water) is a by-product of burned gasoline in the combustion chamber. It leaves the cylinder and condenses when it flows through the cool exhaust system. Forming little droplets of water on the inside walls of the muffler and tail pipe. It comes out the tail pipe as droplets of water. When the exhaust heats up it stops condensing and exits the pipe with the exhaust gasses. Sorry I don't know anyone in New Orleans. I am in Canada. Best thing you can do, is learn to look after your car yourself. Joing P15-D24.com web site and get tons of help there. Cheers. - Keith
Keith, you are a great teacher of these old flatheads! Very inspiring...
Thanks. I appreciate that.

Did the ether not escape?

No clue at the time on size or Cu in but it fit perfectly on the 2dr coupe

I never would have thought to use an ultrasound cleaner for car parts. I am familiar with them from watchmakers/jewelers however.

Remove the starter and check the linkaage. Also the nose cone with bendix. Its likely the bendix is bound up.
enjoyed your video, thx
Always look forward to your videos, can I ask where did you order your cleaner from? I am researching for one now.
I got it on Ali Express.
@@keithsgarage5831 Thanks for the tip, got my order in today for one.
@@BA-wx6vs what size did you go with?
@@keithsgarage5831 After much thought I went with the 10 litre.

Looks like they honed the cylinders with 40 grit sandpaper.
The bright LED flash light was making the hone lines appear large and deep. An illusion.
What happened to the rebuild you just did??? Did the machine shop miss it???
The engine rebuild I just completed was in my ‘38 Plymouth. This cracked head is in my ‘38 Chrysler.

Your head gasket was definitely leaking.
Did you swipe the dog's water? He seemed to think so, lol
You mean when he stared me down, after the engine did't start? Lol.
Where do you find and buy your parts from?
I maintain a good inventory of used parts. I buy parts new from various sources. E-Bay. Vintage Power Wagons. Rock Auto. Andy Bernbaum.
Hi Keith, I have a finned aluminum cylinder head and a two single intake for a flathead Dodge or Plymouth engine, if anyone is interested. Bill
Hi Bill How long is the head 23” or 25”? Thx.
