Sean, I can’t get that massive young bird loss out of my head. Like you, I was a novice (at 42) and had to learn it all. I hope you don’t mind my young bird experience. I trained my youngsters to the point where, in the first race, they had already been there and back several times. I exercised the birds in the morning and in the evening, when it was cooler. I wanted them up for an hour each loft release. I never fed them before their flying, or on their training tosses. That way the first back got the pick of the feed, and the big peas would go first. My birds never landed anywhere but the landing board. They fought to get in first. Once the birds were happy loft flying, they were taken down the road 5 miles, then 10 miles, another at 10 miles, 20 miles.....right up to 150-200 miles. They had flown innumerable times from 100 miles. By the time the races started on Sept. 1st, a race was just another familiar training toss. They knew their landmarks and it was just old hat for them. I don’t know whether you will appreciate this, however, I’m doing this simply because if I can help you do better, and get all your birds back on a toss or a race, I’ll be happy for the both of us. I want to see you excel. Aloha my friend.
I appreciate you taking your time to give me advice. However, even the top flyers still lose many birds in Hawaii. The first race this year had 1200+ birds and that does not count the many birds lost during their first off island training tosses and the last race of the season only had 240 birds entered. And it’s like this every year. I know top flyers in Hawaii that still lose 90% of their birds. Wish it was not the case but it is in Hawaii. And you can see the difficulty the birds have by looking at the GPS tracking during their off island releases.
Jesus Henry Christ! Well if slow and steady incremental training tosses don’t work I’m sure I don’t know what would. My heart sinks when I see you check your loft on a training toss and only find two birds. I’m devastated for you and the poor youngsters. Tough flying old birds if no young birds survive, eh? I only flew young birds because I didn’t have room for old birds. On a positive note, it saves you from having to cull birds at the end of the season. 🥴 I sincerely wish you the best of luck in the future. May they come straight and true! Mahalo!
I suppose you will never send more than 50% of your young birds on a training toss or race in future? Wow. Hawaii is a tough place to enjoy the sport of pigeon racing!!!
I'm with everyone else. Great video as always, Sean! Truly enjoy watching you with your birds, who btw, are looking really good. Keep up the good work. Aloha, from the mainland! ;-)
Hi Sean bro. How are you? I hope you and your family is fine :) I'm missing your videos and ur lovely pigeons but it's alright..be safe bro... love from *INDIA* 🇮🇳
Condition and activity of the birds looks spot on💪👍 How much sun in a year do you get there🤔 Nice and tame easier to manage and in my humble opinion aids towards the imprinting of the birds and settling is much easier too👍🕊and lovely deep box perches , Your lofts are quite open , which is fine Here in the UK, England the climate is something to anything wet dry wet wet very unpredictable at times, so lofts tend to be designed and built accordingly Warmth , an a sufficient supply of oxygen promotes conditioning Again my opinion Really great vids an awesome detail for fanciers to learn from 🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊 Best wishes Shaun Walker
Thank you very much! The shortest day last year 12/21/2017 had a sunrise of 7:04am and sunset of 5:54pm for 10:50 hours of sunlight. The upcoming longest day of the year 6/21/2018 will have a sunrise of 5:50am and a sunset of 7:16pm for 13:25 hours of sunlight. Aloha, Sean
hey shaun great video!!i must say the condition of the youngsters is very very good!! some of the best i have seen in a loft in many years and thats my honest opinion!!!,so all credit to you for having them in that condition!! i will also comment on your trap training it is also very good!! if you can get birds trapping like that on race day you will be doing very well!!!,,,it is very important to teach them this as young as possible,as you are doing!!! i dont know if you do this or not but do you basket train your youngsters??to eat and drink in the basket?? in my view this is one of the most important things to teach them!!!with my experience i feel the race is won or lost in the basket!!! preperation is key!!!and is best started as young as possible,,please also tell me if the birds have been medicated yet i hope this is not the case!!! Also say hi to bob for me,,didn't see him in the video!!
Thank you! I will be trying to get them comfortable around and in the basket. They had their first PMV Pharmavac Columbi 2 shot at 35 days old per the instructions with the vaccine and it also advises a second dose 3 to 4 weeks after the first. I was able to sneak Bob into the opening video intro, lol.
Hi! My name is Ashley and I've been training pigeon since I was 12 and I'm 15. I was wondering how do you train your pigeons to want to be on your shoulder and to stay on your shoulder? I have two pigeons right now, but one of them, her name is Bell. But she has one leg and it's kind of hard for her to balance on my shoulder (cat ripped her leg off) in general. But she just flies off and goes back into the coup instead of staying on my shoulder. I tried looking up ways to train pigeons to stay on your shoulder. But I have no luck! All my pigeons have been Wild, and I don't know if it's just that, because I had one named Chirps and he stayed on my shoulder, before something happened to him and he flew off. I tried using food to bribe her. But Bell just picks at my thumb! So my big question is, how do you train a one-legged pigeon to stay on your shoulder????? P.S. Bell wants to stay on my shoulder, but because she has one leg she has a hard time balancing, falls off and flies off or to the coop.
That's a hard question. I have never had a pigeon with one leg. You said she wants to stay on your shoulder but it's difficult for her to balance. All of the birds that you see on my shoulders are hand raised pigeons so they're pretty tame. My pigeons love raw Spanish peanuts so maybe that could help. To be honest, it may be difficult. It's difficult for my birds with two legs to stay on my shoulder when I'm walking so I would think it would be easier for her if you were not moving while she is on your shoulder. Waring clothing on your shoulders that does not move would also help. I wish you the best of luck and think it's great that you take care of an injured pigeon. Aloha, Sean
Hey Sean, Your young birds look great! Do you ever worry about having too many birds? What about if you have a really slow pigeon that you don't want to keep, how do you deal with it? Also, do you ever enter your birds in one loft races? I have limited space is why I ask about keeping too many. Thanks
Never done a one loft race. I try not to over crowd the birds in any one loft. If I have a slow bird I will use it for fostering. I have not had to cull any birds because I lose so many flying over the ocean.
Hey Sean, is it normal to loose a good number of eggs during a breeding season? I have 8 pair of breeders and got 12 eggs out of them this first time around, 5 of those 12 eggs were bad. Thanks
If it's not from eggs cracking then it's the breeders age or health. Older birds are more likely to only give one egg. Cocks are more likely to produce infertile eggs if they're unhealthy or have low fertility. Extending the day light schedule by 4 hours a day with artificial light will increase fertility. Making sure the breeders are healthy before pairing is also very important. I run my breeders through canker, salmonella, worm and pmv, a month before they're paired. Fresh grit is also important. If the birds had a lot of illness in their past then it can sometimes make it difficult to breed which is the reason I'm having difficulty breeding my giant runts. Best of luck to you!
Great info! I will consider all of those things. I just bought this breeders a few months ago so not really sure of history but a few are about 8 to nine years old. Thanks so much!
Thank you! I was working on the loft extension today so hopefully I will have a video update soon. I was looking at my channel analytics and after the US the Philippines has the most people watching my videos. Pigeon racing must be pretty popular in the Philippines. Aloha, Sean
AlohaPigeons yes we have a great pigeon association here in Philippines. This could be the next big thing here. Hopefully. Many club to join racing pigeons. thank you for noticing my comment :)
Lol, all good. Worked on the loft extension today and it's getting close to completion. Hope to upload an update at the end of the week. I'm still learning how to edit videos so it takes me a long time. Second round of birds needs to go in the new loft soon so that's the priority this week. Thanks for asking! Aloha, Sean
They're doing okay. My loft extension is really holding me up. I have been busy working but I was able to get the paint done yesterday. Just have to mont the boxes and landing board door and done. I have a little time off in three days so the second round should be in the new loft soon. I will post an update after it's done. Sorry so MIA. Aloha!
Bey Sean. Very good video! The youngsters look incredible. Lean and strong. I can see a marked improvement based on what you learned on the feeding compared to last years birds. The white flight splashes from your no 1 pair look especially good. The taming of the birds you have done is the same way i did back when i had birds. There is one key difference when trapping birds thats very different from my days. We had a trap design that is different than what is used today. The old style had a locking mechanism that would lock the trap bars shut. Thats because the old trap design needed to be accessed from outside because all racing bands were manually clocked in by hand. Where as today the clocking of the birds is done with a sensor pad on the landing. Also the bottom portion of the old style traps needed to be dropped below the landing board and the birds had to drop into the trap itself and couldn't back out so retrieval of the race bands could be done. Then the trap was unlocked and the bird could then enter the loft. I wish we had modern day trapping/clocking back when i was racing birds. It would have made things much simpler. For those who are considering this sport, whats the typical price for a sensor type unit and how its used? Keep up the great work.
hey mate! if only it was that simple... to make it worth my while i would need a set up close to what i had before. and right now i dont see that happening. I would love that, but no...
If i had the permission to build, then i would get back in full throttle and give Sean a run for his money!! LOL ... as it is im not sure I'd ever get permission.
I'm still waiting for the roofing to be made but I have to get going because the second round has started to hatch. Hope to work on the extension this week.
Sorry, I don't sell my birds. All of my breeders were a gift to me by my mentor in the sport and I would not feel right making money off of his generosity. Thank you, and I hope you understand. Aloha, Sean
Young bird season starts August 25 this year and we have 2 races from Maui at just over 110 miles and we have 7 races from the Big Island which can be up to about 240 miles. I think there was about 50 lofts flying on Oahu last year.
Ready for more! Great looking blue bar at the end there...
I hope soon. It should be a good update because so much has happened, good and bad. Aloha, Sean
I have had pigeons for thirty years and I fine your video very interesting I watched all your videos can't wait for racing.
Thank you very much James!

Incremental training tosses, I believe, is key. I trained them hard and I only had a small lot with 20 youngsters. I didn’t lose any.
I appreciate you taking your time to give me advice. However, even the top flyers still lose many birds in Hawaii. Nice one Sean! Great video as always 👌
Thank you!
Nice video and very clean loft. I once got feral pigeons in Miami to eat out of my hand. They must have been very desperate for food. 😬
Thank you!
Great looking birds, and nice work training them. Are those blinds under the landing board? Nice flying loft...
Thank you! Those are glass window jalousies.
Great video.. Have a blessed day..
Great competition amongst flyers .... In old bird season .....
Great video🙂, very helpful information. Thanks for sharing!!
Thank you!
Hey what happened to you?I don't see you making any more videos.Man, what's going on?Are you okay?Give me an update thanks
Condition and activity of the birds looks spot on💪👍
How much sun in a year do you get there🤔
Nice and tame easier to manage and in my humble opinion aids towards the imprinting of the birds and settling is much easier too👍🕊and lovely deep box perches ,
Your lofts are quite open , which is fine
Here in the UK, England the climate is something to anything wet dry wet wet very unpredictable at times, so lofts tend to be designed and built accordingly
Warmth , an a sufficient supply of oxygen promotes conditioning
Again my opinion
Really great vids an awesome detail for fanciers to learn from 🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊
Best wishes

are you considering making a comeback??brian since your asking the prices of timing systems????lol
Thank you! I think the electronic clocks start around $1000 which is a lot for someone just getting into the sport.
hey mate! if only it was that simple... to make it worth my while i would need a set up close to what i had before. and right now i dont see that happening. I would love that, but no...
