- TMNT is an unfairly maligned game, due mostly to the severe challenge (of the levels) and the their later envisioning in games (the beat em' ups).
But this game is underrated, and it has been for a long time. You just hear tell of it more now due to a new TMNT film and the game getting released on the Wii's VC. I understand that it's difficult and sometimes unforgiving in design, but if you know where to go and how to go about it, this game isn't so bad.
I've loved this game since childhood, and still do to this day. The bosses range from dirt easy to difficult, but they all have one common foil - Donny.
Anyways, if you play this game play it WITHOUT bias.

Donatello. The superior turtle
He was always my favorite turtle as a kid.
yes he was my turtle and in the nes sequel arcade game.. he can keep one bar of health seemingly forever before dying. to this day that strikes me as weird.
Raph reclaimed the throne in the following games.
All the turtles were good in this game this game is one of the best on the nes Raphael and Michaelangelo are the best in this game Raph spins his sai..it's fkn cool bro...

im opposite.. as a kid I couldn't get to the end of the hallway with shredder.. but in my 20s I beat shredder once lol

It's so wild that a game with so much rage-inducing difficulty has such hilariously easy bosses.
if there's anything redeeming about this game, it's the soundtrack. absolutely fantastic tunes.

This game used to crush my will to live when I was a child.
As soon as I saw you video here, I took a quick video of it on my mobile phone and sent it to her. She remembers the game only too well. The funny thing is that this was the first ever computer game that she had played! My friends just could not get over the fact that she beat it. She became a bit of a gaming wizard really but my dad hated her playing it as he said she neglected the housework lol. She is now 63 but I bet she could still kick some serious butt! ;)

Wasn't a really big fan of the game, but the boss music still gives me shivers to this day. Konami and ULTRA knew what the hell they were doing.
I loved this game I don't care what anybody says, it was so fun to play back in the day.
This game was definitely one of a kind for NES. The gameplay was so unique compared to other ones of that era. It was not for kids that's for sure, I remember being so upset not being able to pass the second level (I was about nine years old at the time). I have only been able to beat the game once so far especially since my NES is so old it glitches most of the time.
damn. i thought those glitches where form some outdated emulator. guess not.

Shredder's easy final battle is like an apology for the REALLY frustrating section of the technodrome filled with those stupid astronauts.
Damn the Shredder really wanted to stand on that platform...
It took me FOREVER to get past the last 3 levels when I was a kid. I used to get lost in the damn Technodrome and those damn rocket soldiers would kick my ass.

I love how the kids of today knock these games if they were around doing these times they would see it was treat to be alive and a kid doing those days.I am 32 now and i miss the times when the Nes and the sega master system were new,loved the commercials and all that stuff back hey we even had arcades and knew how it was to waste quarters just to beat games instead of just downloading them on Xbox live and PSN.The kids of today will never know how it is to miss these days until they get older.
This game use to bring out the rage within my 5 year old self.

bizboy5 Leo dealt the same amount of damage no matter how much energy he has left (unlike Raph or Mike, their damage was tied to the remaining health they had). He was a decent turtle to move through a level, but he definitely needed sub weapons to deal with strong enemies.
One of my fav games from childhood. Totally underrated. I've been going back to it lately, lol. I never did beat it as a kid, but I went back to it as a teenager and beat it. Man, this game is a challenge...

I like that they used the original look for shredder from the original comics. No other game has ever done that.

love how glitchy and slow the Technodrome fight gets because of all the limitations of NES with all the stuff on the screen.
Endless hours of playing this game and drinking surge, I could never beat it..... Nice to finally see the ending!!
The 1987 cartoon changed the original story and made a human transformed into a rat. The first episode Leonardo stated that one day they would find who dropped the mutagen on them and return Splinter to normal.
Of course the end of the first season had Splinter state that he feels it's his karma to live as a rat and the mission is seemingly abandoned but you can see were the game was going with the ending.
Best part of this game, for me, was fighting the Technodrome. The music is just epic and feels like a fight for your life.. With the slow entrance of it too.. All awesome. I played this game for years and years and years and never beat it straight up. Shredder's level was just too damn hard. Those stupid flying grey dudes with the lasers. Too high to jump over, but too low to duck under.. F U C K

Man, did I ever have a sense of accomplishment the day I beat this game without Game Genie! And does anyone else think it's weird that April never gets hurt no matter how many times Rocksteady shoots her with his gun?
For a moment I thought Donatello was fighting Splinter, but then I realized Rocksteady’s skin is the colour of Splinter’s kimono.
LOVE this game! Quick tip: If you ever use the game genie to make yourself invincible, don't fall in the lava. You'll stay there forever since you can't move or die. XD
Just goes to show not every one of their games has to be a fighter! (Not that Arcade wasn't fun!)

Who succeeded in restoring the impression felt when playing it in the '90s? Like. I myself remember the fact of me playing it very well, but can't restore the exact impression received namely in the '90s right in the head... What makes me really sad is that I thought back then the impressions would be with me for good😢

LOL, my sentiments exactly - splinter returning to human form is a twist ending!
Anyone else notice how horribly misshapen the Technodrome is? It had been shown quite often in the cartoon -- and in the arcade game, a depiction of it is shown before the final stage -- that thing is freakin' MASSIVE, and completely dwarfs the Turtles. Here, it's only four or five times as tall as the turtle. It would've been kinda cool to see a boss in this game that's far too large, too tall, to fit on one screen.

me, it didnt matter which turtle i had....just as long as i had 99 scrolls for don and at least 20 for another turtle, this game flew by!! playin this easter out of tradition!!
I found it really difficult too, but get this... MY MUM BEAT THE GAME BEFORE ME! lol. She loved it and became addicted. She played for hours a day until she beat it. God, I respected her when she did that!

Will Smith he was a human and got turned to a Rat because he lived in the sewers and that was the thing he got in contact with when the mutantage hit him
Man, I've had this game for longer than I remember. I never even got much passed the water dam level till I was in high school! I only beat the game once, about a year or so ago.

have to agree with you regarding Turtles on the NES being so underrated, this game was awesome.
TMNT were my favorite thing as a kid. I remember playing this game and being frustrated as hell because I could not get any farther than the level after saving the dam (the disarming the bomb part was total BS). I'm glad im not the only one that had trouble with this game.

I remember the swimming level in this game. Good god it was hell on me as a child.
Don was the smartest of the turtles, hence he stood on the top of the crates.
At the end Master Splinter should have said: YOU DEFEATED THE SHREDDER AND SAVED THE WORLD..NOW YOU ARE THE SHIZZLE NIZZLE BIZZLE!lol!

You do know you can destroy the hatchway on the technodrome, right? Then no more ninjas come out.
Maybe the cart we played on was glitched or something, but I recall if you did that, you died when you jumped into the hatch after the fight ended and the game softlocked.
As you wish. Give me a few days to prepare another Boss Rush, no cheese or sub weapons. I'm going to switch Turtles if I need to, however.

@URYNOME I don't understand how you can reach Shredder (which is really difficult) but can't beat Shredder (which was really easy). I don't get it.

I'm ashamed to say I never made it all the way through this so I didn't see all the bosses, so thank God for RUclips. Also, is that the same music from the first Batman NES game?
I don't think the cartoon version Splinter was a wererat. I've always taken the prefix "were" to imply that the being changes back and forth between its human and lycanthropic forms. Splinter was mutated into an anthropomorphic rat who only changed back into a human in one episode, and it wasn't an act of will. If I recall correctly, Donatello somehow cured Splinter's mutation.
ive had this game since I was a kid and i have never been able to get passed the 3rd level lol. its great to see how it ends although i am mad that the ending is so bad

Yeah I want you mean, it took me a couple years to get to shredder. Those white guys with the jetpacks are the most annoying enemy in the game, the kept killing me until a magazine said how to make them go away in the narrow corridors in the yellow corridor near shredder

@boynextdoor1981 If you REALLY want to beat the game, acquire lots of scroll weapons. You can only find them in certain buildings in levels 3, 4, 5, and parts of 6. Find the ones in level 3, keep going back until you have 99 scrolls for all four turtles. Try not to use them and try not to lose any turtles or obtain any other weapons until you get to level 6. They are powerful enough to cut through any of the enemies you will encounter.
Never got passed the technodrome as a kid and doubt I would fare better now. 😂

This is what I dont understand: everyone hates this game because of its challenge, yet everyone LOVES Castlevania 1, which is much much harder than TMNT and downright unfair at times.

i have always really liked this game but could never really get too far. im glad you can do such an awesome job! lol. You may want to watch some of the videos from The Game Chasers on their channel captain8bit , they go out to find alllll kinds of retro games & systems and are hilarious!

I remember completing this game in under 15 mins when I was 9. Donatello was by far the best Turtle to use. Funny how big the outside of the technodrome is in the series compared to the game lol
I'm assuming Slash is the Turtle u fight 2 save Splinter on the rooftop? LOL Plus I like how Splinter turns back n2 a human only to be a rat again n the other games. I usually stock u on scrolls and tri-ninja stars b4 I even set foot near the technodrones' level.

I was only able to get as far as the technodrome because getting to the technodrome is only half the battle. The bad guys in that level take out your 2 blocks of health in one hit.
Awww nes days, This game was hard as fuck, but with a lot of practice I beat it. Took me forever. The weapon you used on shredder made it super easy, if I remember right I used all my turtles, shredder has a ray gun that will one shot you and turn you into a small turtle again, damn.
Though, Shredder is super easy even without that weapon. Basically, you can do the very same with your regular weapons as well. That is, he's easy if you know that you can do that.
