One thing that I think is interesting is that Walter in later stages, hell maybe even at the very start has opposite mentality as he should as a teacher, as he is so proud and hurt by thr Elliot incident, that he rather would kill or hurt someone who could do meth as good as his, than let them be better at what he is doing or replace him. There is that "that's best I can do, I can't allow anyone to beat me or be good as me" mentality and usually I think teachers strive to make their students as good if not better than them. I'm... not sure if I made my point clear but TLDR - Walter teaches but is too proud to let anyone overcome his own best achievements, if someone can do it better than him, he feels like not needed or just like nothing.

Jimmy McGill and Walter White are characters who could have done so much good with their skills and at times they did, particularly Jimmy, but then there were the times they couldn’t help themselves and indulged in the part of themselves that just blow up a great thing they have going, whether it was intentional or not. I think the real heroes of the shows were Hank and Howard. They were the literal antithesis of both antiheroes.
Through the arc of Breaking Bad, we realize that Hank, as blunt and cringy as he was, was a far better man than Walter. Countless times we see Walter tremble, shake and fumble around when dangerous events take place. We witness Hank in two different gunfights. In each one he is incredibly aggressive, decisive, tough and quick-thinking.
Through the arc of Better Call Saul, we realize that Howard, as slick and too-perfect as he was, was far more ethical and selfless than Jimmy was. We find out he was just an all around awesome guy who often used the position and riches he had to better the people around him.
Both of these characters were doomed. I suspect so the death of what the anti-heroes could and should have been, would impact us more. It was masterful story telling. We start off despising Hank and Howard because of the "surface" the writers show us. As we watch the antiheroes gradually decline, we also are shown gradually shown how great Hank and Howard are. As we realize the guys we were routing for are actually detestable people, we also realize how amazing Hank and Howard are.
The primary characters who represent the Good are killed brutally right at the zenith of of their character development. At that point, as far as the eye can see, no one truly good is left. Only THEN do we watch both antiheroes make their final decent into evilness.
It is not an exaggeration to say this stuff is Shakespeare-level story telling. Absolutely superb. You will find nothing superior to this.

    • @whatno3145
      @whatno3145 Год назад +7

Reducing Hank to "a hero" is removing what he represents. Sure, he's to be compared with Howard as they both reveal that they are far more complex than just "ego driven asshat"
But unlike Hank, Howard betters himself. He goes to see a therapist, he offers Jimmy a job and he tries his hardest to mend Chucks wounds.
Hank? Sure he gains PTSD from killing Tuco, but does he ever go to a therapist or try and better himself? Nope. He suffers in silence, just like alot of men do in his career. He continues down his own self destructive path. He becomes a shell of a man, and that shell transforms into a monster.
"The kid? Oh you mean the, junkie meth dealing murderer that's dribbling all over my bathroom floor?.. Oh well, if he is... Pinkman gets killed, and we get it all on tape."
This is not a good man, and I think this quote from the video "Hank is not a hero" sums it up perfectly.
"I think people just want Hank to be a hero, because in comparison to our monster of a protagonist, most people would seem like it. With their flaws dwarfed and diminished in favour of that heroism."

Walters insecurities, from what i remember, are related to Elliot's wife. She and Walter used to date as we can see on the flashbacks of some episodes, but they broke up due to Walter feeling inferior to her, since she came from a wealthy family and was very bright, while Walter was poor and came from a not so wealthy family. That's why he ended up marrying Skyler, she was less succesful than him, wasn't as bright as him and was way younger in comparison. You can see some glimpses of this when He and Elliot's wife are in the restaurant and he throws at her the F bomb.

I think something that links both of their motivations to do bad is also just passion for the job. Even besides the money, they both do their respective crimes because they love doing it. Jimmy gets a very financially secure law job with Davis and Maine and immediately throws it away, and later gets his massive settlement from the Sandpiper case. Walt gets an offer to have all his bills paid, and makes 6 figures in one weekend of meth cooking early in the show that would see his family safe even if he did die.
But neither of them really cared about the money. Jimmy just can't help pulling scams, it's an art to him. It would be like telling Miles Davis he can't play trumpet again. Walt similarly just loves cooking meth. For both of them, it's something they're really good at, and it gives them the kind of ego boost and sense of power they never get from living their lives straight.

For me I'm not convinced Walt cared about Jesse on that level. Walt is an extreme narcissist so his only interest was his pride in his meth work. Which is why he reacted in anger in learning Jesse was cooking again. He did however have a change of heart but that also was more about Walt than helping Jesse. He wanted to be on good terms with Jesse, but it was always in a paternalistic, Walt knows best for Jesse-toxic manner of concern. Walt reveals this at the end. He just wanted to do and be the best at something. That's all that ever mattered to him. Narcissists have this problem of viewing their victims as a extension of them personally, their victims don't have personal autonomy in their mind. Walt's family, also his victims, don't have the same autonomy which is why To'hajiilee is so amazing, it all blows up. So Walt's seeming concern for Jesse, rescuing him at the end is again not about Jesse, it's about Walt.

Even though how it gets there doesn’t make sense.
Also Jimmy never talked about his crime in Nebraska. How he tried to kill a cancer patient and an old lady and how he was complicit in poisoning Brock. He didn’t even address his regrets about Howard’s death which makes me wonder what is the point of him doing his Nebraska crimes and him looking at Howard’s corpse whole night if these led to nothing.

@@nont18411 He didn't need to go into specifics regarding his cover of poisoning Brock because all of those deeds were concealed under his statement "I lied for Walter, and helped him grow his business" He was going to jail for the rest of his life regardless, so no need to add details that may discourage Kim from visiting him
Also, what do you mean Howard's death led to nothing? He explicitly stated "What happened to Hamlin was... unspeakable" implying he did feel regret about his death. Also, Howard's death also led to Kim's livelihood to be at risk because she exposed the truth about what they did to Howard. Saul realized this when the opposing attorney's team told him about Kim's act of kindness, which prompted him to sacrifice his selfish lifestyle so Kim could live a happy lifestyle.

@@JavRexgteneg2pIift Which mean even in his “redemption”, it’s still self serving that Jimmy chose to omit things that will make him look bad to Kim.
And about Howard, he tried to sell Howard’s case to reduce his sentence a few hours ago. He feels nothing for Howard except for the fact that Kim dumped him for it and why should his personal redemption be about protecting Kim from the consequences of her actions? Kim needs to face her own punishment. Jimmy stole that in the last moment by saying that she has no involvement with Howard’s death to make her love him again. That’s why I said Howard’s death led to nothing. It only affected Jimmy because Kim dumped him for it but not in a spiritual level like his trauma or his regrets about treating Howard like crap. It was so inconsequential to Kim because she dumped Jimmy on her own volition, nobody took the job away from her and her life is million times better than everyone else in this universe.
And as usual, the audience finds it acceptable because they love Kim so much that Kim not facing punishment of her actions while walking with the head held high as a morally pure angel moral compass while a diabolical Jimmy getting in jail for her crimes are so satisfying.

The tone of BCS was established in the first six episodes in season 1, providing somewhat lighthearted moments with Jimmy's gags and Mike's time with his family, while showcasing the underling seriousness and sorrow behind Jimmy's attempts at being better but failing, and with Mike's tragic attempts to redeem his Son.
With every season, the lighthearted tone gets less attention while the tragedy becomes more prominent. The show has maintained this consistency for six seasons.
