Thanks for explaining hay situation and options to consider. We are getting our own cows this year(?) Before it was another farmer's cows from only May - October, so never did hay nor frozen water situation. Got 3 lambs in May to "practise" this winter but now looks like we may get 8 Hereford heifers too!
We're trying different things to stretch acres and feed. I grind a batch of corn and add a bale of straw. It fluffs the feed. Less weight for volume, extending the grain and can sell more wfor cash. Wheats about the cheapest thing you can plant. You can bale it graze it or combine it. I think with wheat straw bedding. It will help with phosphorus for corn. I think wheat is under utilized .. you might want to check out vesser cattle company. He is doing some things like a generation or 2 back. That's where I think everyone is going to be going
@@sandsock Yesser Cattle Company does wrapped hay, I think we need to do that to start. Also, if you had to guess, how many bales of hay do 8 Herefords need a day?
@@LowSkillFarmer just depends. Graze as much as you can now .so they don't need much. With about 35 cows and calves. Usually I use about 1 round bale every 24 hours. When it gets sub freezing they need more. About 15 small squares are equal to 1of my round bale. You can do some crude math.
