Very good bourbon. My only complaint is that which is more directed at the bourbon industry writ-large, and that is there needs to be more pot-still bourbons. There are a few for sure (Balcones, Woodinville, local bourbon where I live called Old Hillside) and I’ve made it a mission to pursue pot-stilled bourbons. The American whiskey industry has its issue no doubt, but I have to applaud my country’s straight whiskey laws, as it mandates a minimum age duration but, just as importantly, prohibits artificial additives of all kinds. WT101 is a great bourbon despite that it’s column-stilled like the vast supermajority of bourbons. And at the current price, it’s a can’t-miss. WT101 is a high-rye mash bill, which lends itself to the fuller flavor. If there’s a high-wheat counterpart to it, it’s Maker’s Mark and is a very good bourbon as well. Softer bourbon for sure because of the wheat but definitely a highly drinkable dram, priced pretty close to WT, I keep a bottle of one sort or another in my cabinet. And unlike WT, MM is non-chill filtered. But I don’t know about its availability in Scotland.
Funny you should mention this. I was watching a TV program the other day that went inside Maker's Mark and (as is often the case when I see inside Bourbon distilleries) when they got to the stills my first though was WTH is that? 😂 I know a lot of Bourbon is column distilled but it's still a shock to my (pot still centric) mind. I'd be all for trying more pot still Bourbon although I feel like column stills are part of the reason that a lot of Bourbon is seemingly very cheap compared to Scotch. Maker's Mark is very available in the UK. It's usually in our grocery stores. Regularly on discount. I bought a bottle recently. I also have an Eagle Rare 10, JD Bonded, Elijah Craig, Sazerac Rye and probably several others than I've forgotten so I'll have to do some sort of comparison series at some point. I'm no Bourbon expert at all but it will be good fun. Cheers 🥃
@@WhiskyLock Had ER10 a while back, definitely a good dram IF you let it oxidize for several minutes. But I find that's largely true for most bourbons. JD Bonded is great too, although that's a Tennessee whisky and Tennessee whisky distillers largely shun the bourbon label. George Dickel BIB is a Tennessee whisky that I love, only downside is it's chill filtered. But if you're wanting a Maker's Mark to properly compare to WT101, see if you can find MM 101, that way at least the ABVs are the same. Aside from pot-still bourbons, MM 101 is probably my next (column still) bourbon.
"Dirty Bird" great name 👍 We actually get a surprisingly good selection of Bourbon in our regular shops. WT101, JD Bonded, Elijah Craig, Makers 46, Eagle Rare 10. Much better than most Scotch in UK supermarkets.
You make the Wild Turkey 101 sound delicious. I'll give it a try in the coming weeks. Firstly, I have a Campbelltown Loch arriving tomorrow. I can't wait to sample it. The only Campbelltown whisky I have tried to date was the Glen Scotia Harbour, which was OK, if a touch odd.
Exciting times! I intend to do a review of Harbour soon, but essentially I think it's a good intro to Campbeltown. Campbeltown Loch is a better whisky though. Cheers 🥃
Great that you chose to review the Wild Turkey 101! I bought myself a bottle a few months ago after having viewed a video by SLB Drinks who spoke very well of it. I just went and got myself a small glass of it as I watched your review. I agree with your thoughts. I think it’s really good value for the money - great bourbon, no doubt about it.
It's the only bottle that is always on my shelf an that is a WT sign of approval. Whenever I see this mentioned I think about our good old pal Whisky Al who loved this stuff. I always used to big up WT Rare Breed but the price of this is fantastic. WT have maintained their price when all others have pushed it up. I've seen many a decent bourbon priced at £20-25 not long ago now at £40. WT 101 has gone up but is so frequently on sale it's an obvious buy at £25 and I think it's better than any whisky at that price. It's a classic Kentucky bourbon and needs no apologies. I was recently in my pad in Andalusia sipping on my last bottle of Balvenie 15 single bourbon. It had a strong bourbon profile so I compared it to my bottle of Wild Turkey 101. I was just as happy with the Wild Turkey. I think I paid $24 euros for a 1 litre bottle. It's a brilliant 50% abv as well and not less than 46% like so many of its competitors. Believe me, I've tried every comparable bourbon in the price range and it wins hands down. I'm very fond of Four Roses Single Barrel which is also 50% but costs more. Rare Breed is twice the price and up against opposition like JD Single Barrel and a different proposition.
@welshtoro3256 Heya Toro! Do you get Old Grand Dad bottled in bond over there? Over here it's within a $ or two of the WT101, and for my money it's a bit better. Maybe the only bottle in that tier that competes with the bird...
Love WT101 and it is excellent value. A bit higher price here, equivalent of about 30 pounds. I too have only ever bought one bottle of the lower strength WT. I don't have a bottle of 101 at the moment as I have a bottle of the Rare Breed, but when that is nearly finished, I will buy the 101 again. Another one I'm enjoying is the Makers Mark Cask Strength which is a similar price to the Rare Breed here. Cheers!
Rare Breed is great. Its just the price difference that makes 101 hard to ignore for me. I haven't had MM Cask Strength yet but I have recently bought a bottle of the standard 45% at a good price. I shall have to do a bourbon comparison at some point. Cheers 🥃
101 is not the best bourbon out there, but when considering all factors, it's hard to beat. Interesting thing about Wild Turkey is that they only have 1 mashbill, and the difference in all the various expressions comes entirely from age, barrel location in the rickhouses, and proof. For an enthusiast, it's a great exploration into how those factors affect flavor.
I have never been much of a bourbon drinker. I find them mostly too sweet and the taste profile is just not for me. But this Wild Turkey 101 is surprisingly tasty. And at that ABV and price, really a no brainer imo. Totally agree with the review.
thanks for the review Shane. I have been on the fence staring down at this bottle for a while now. You pulled the trigger for me. - -Also - on another note - I picked up the Hampden HLCF classic after enjoying the 8 year.... and wow that is an experience worth trying. Blew my mind actually.
Happy to help! If you see it on offer it's an easy buy. Hampden is great. Shame they're not easy to get hold of but I'm glad you got one. I bought a Worthy Park TECC (1600 ester) recently which I love. Cheers 🥃
I came to bourbon many years after cask strength single malt, so I jumped past 101 and right to Rare Breed and other higher proof bourbons. Of the ones I can now find regularly now in western Canada, Old Forester 1920 is my favourite. I managed to get an Elijah Craig Barrel Proof ay my local store, and it is pretty great. What can you get in ryes in the UK? It's the one thing that Canadian distillers do well.
Hi! There are some Ryes available here. Honestly it's not a category that I've had huge success with. There are actually a couple of English ryes now. Oxford Rye is very, very good but probably extremely different to what you'd recommend. I've been drinking a Whistlepig 10 lately that I like a lot. What ryes do you recommend?
I always have the WT101 & a Buffalo Trace as part of my permashelf. I also have a few more Bourbons, but nothing really jumps out (being in Aus) in the sub AUD$150-. I prefer the 101 to the Rare Breed, as it does nothing for me tbh. If i'm looking for a complex bourbon, i invariably change my mind & have a scotch or aussie whisky. The 101 is all peanut shells to me and a very easy sipper.
For me the difference of $28 vs $48 is worth getting the Rare Breed to get rid of that young note I think you referred to as "wood glue". But as a value WT 101 has always been there, and all over the world.
All down to preference for sure. And to be fair $48 still isn't hard to justify for what you get. No wrong answers. I've actually noticed that I don't find youthful bourbon as objectionable as youthful Scotch 🤷♂️ Did you ever have WT 101 when it had an 8yo age statement? I think that narrowed the gap to Rare Breed a little.

I love Eagle Rare. Very, very good but quite different to most other bourbons IMHO. I did a blind tasting of half a dozen bourbons a few weeks ago and Eagle Rare really stood out.
Four roses single barrel cost 2€ less in my country. So for me that one is the best value bourbon. I think wild turkey 101 says 6-8 years old. The new bottle seems to me too sweet, I liked the old label one. Thanks for the review 😊
The 8 year old age statement is apparently coming back next year, someone did a tour at the Wild Turkey Distillery and the tour guide stated it as fact and I've heard it repeated by a few others since then so hopefully we will see it going back to the 'good old days' as an age stated whisky. But all that aside, it's a great £25 Bourbon for the drinks cabinet but is only beaten by WT Rare Breed in exactly the same way (cheap and tasty for a 116 proof bourbon), personally I drink more of the BT products: eg. BT, ER, Saz Rye, Kosher Rye, Blantons as I seem to prefer their bourbon profile a lot more than the standard WT profile but that's a matter of subjective taste rather than a quality for price type of thing.
Oh wow. Very interested to see if this results in a change or if they're adding an age statement to reflect what's being put into the vattings these days. A good sign either way. I really must get myself a bottle of Rare Breed soon. Cheers 🥃

Hi Pierre! Honestly I haven't noticed much change recently. Possible that you got a sub par batch 🤔 I did notice a difference when they dropped the 8yo age statement but that was quite a while ago now. Cheers 🥃
Had this many times. I agree it's the best bargain in bourbon. It's not always on offer where I live. Not had it for a while. I like softer bourbons at the moment. I will get back to it eventually. I keep buying old forester 86 at the moment. It's a bit easier to drink in my opinion. I rarely buy scotch from the supermarket. The selection is very poor. The bourbon selection isn't great either.
To me, as a primarily Scotch whisky drinker living in the US, the difference between Scotch and bourbon is not necessarily that bourbon is sweeter (which it is) , but that the flavors are stronger, more “in your face “ than the ones in Scotch whisky. I think it’s an American thing. Even the American Single Malt Whiskies have stronger flavors , compared to Scotch whisky.
Campari is not exactly a small player in the spirits business. It probably has to do with availability and an old Ralfy review but UK folks always mention Eagle Rare, which comes in a nice bottle and is okay, but it's just okay, and is often overpriced here in the USA.
I've heard about the Eagle Rare price difference between UK and USA. Very odd to us Brits as its readily available here, never expensive and occasionally even on discount. I do quite like it though. I've always been curious about the 17yo version but not had the chance to try that one.
@@WhiskyLock Never had the 17 so I don't have an opinion other than to suggest that I don't think Bourbon and high age statements are necessarily a good thing and certainly not worth paying up for.
Despite being American I never much warmed to Bourbon until I had a Knob Creek. I still generally prefer Scotch but do like Eagle Rare, Old Weller and Wild Turkey Rare Breed. Have you tried the unchillfiltered version of the latter?
Hi! Rare Breed unfiltered? Nope haven't had that. Knob Creek inspired me to find some better bourbons too though. Along with Weller 12, Eagle Rare and Wild Turkey 8yo 👍
WT101 is my best value bourbon. Eagle Rare 10 might be my favourite bourbon. I have a few quality bourbons open at the moment and I think Eagle Rare is the most different and interesting. Also great for Scotch drinkers 👍

Interesting point and I'd agree. I think it had something to do with maturation and climate.
Better having 101 and addi g your water, not sure how much water to add ia a dram to get fro. 50 to 40 abv
I bought a bottle of this from amazon last year for £16.50. I'm reasonably confident that I'll never buy a better value bottle of whisky.
😳 I missed that one. Crazy value!
Along with Weller 12, Eagle Rare and Wild Turkey 8yo 👍
eagle rare bourbon birdy whiskey
Eagle Rare.
WT101 is my best value bourbon. Eagle Rare 10 might be my favourite bourbon. I have a few quality bourbons open at the moment and I think Eagle Rare is the most different and interesting. Also great for Scotch drinkers 👍
@@WhiskyLock Also a bird ;-)
@@matthewfaust yes! I knew there was another 🙂
