    EXCELLENT VID, HADAR! In case students want to know what this is called, specifically, in English--> it is called a 'GLOTTAL STOP" on the "T". There are many words that do this. You'll hear Americans do this on words like "mountain" (mou'in) interview (in'erview)...etc...
    I teach Spanish speakers--> American English for a living (for almost 15 years now). I teach this exact pronunciation pointer a lot with Spanish Speakers; "The Glottal Stop"

    Hi .You teach pretty well .very specific .I know the or sound it's one of the phonics sounds.So when you pronounce or this word,the r here is it as strong as the r sound in the ending of other words such as better ,beer ?Or It is weaker ?

    Is this called glottal stop?

  • @calincucuietu8220
    @calincucuietu8220 7 лет назад

    Actually, the first n is just nasalised, that is you say it without touching the palate. Then you touch the palate for t, but you do not release it, but you go for n, again no release and than release the tongue with the last t.
    There is a more simple variant with import schwa nt.

    Hi Hadar, I have not understood if the schwa sound should pronounce with the mouth's relaxing position and expressing a sort of moan ' ahh ' or pronouncing the vocal ' a ' for the word important like this would not exist ? That is to say. /Im 'port ent/ or /Im 'port nt/
    Thanks a lot!!

    • @hadar.shemesh

      No, it's not reduced in American English. In British English it is dropped.

  • @LivingOnCash
    @LivingOnCash 6 лет назад +2

    You are teaching this incorrectly! This is the correct pronunciation: [im-pawr-tnt]
    The middle T should be pronounced. Saying im-pawr-ent is not correct. Look it up in a dictionary.

    • @hadar.shemesh
      @hadar.shemesh  6 лет назад

      Did I say to drop it? It’s released through the nose, not in the mouth. So it sounds different

    • @LivingOnCash
      @LivingOnCash 6 лет назад +2

      Maybe you didn't say to drop it but you clearly are dropping it when you say the word. I see this happening increasingly, especially with young people. Important, mountain, any word with a middle T become impor-ant, moun-in, etc. You are doing it but not to the extent I hear others. From Dictionary.com: [im-pawr-tnt] or im-por-tant. You are teaching a slang version of the word by shortening the tant to a nnt. Perhaps this is the new modern way to say it but I was taught back in the 60's to say the T, to enunciate the word correctly and completely and not shorten it or say it too quickly losing the T.

    • @hadar.shemesh
      @hadar.shemesh  6 лет назад

      When the T appears before a Schwa (reduces vowel) and an N it is either released through the nose or pronounced with a glottal stop (which is what you hear). It’s not slang but a phonological process that occurs in American English:)

    • @LivingOnCash
      @LivingOnCash 6 лет назад +3

      Okay, so perhaps it has become an acceptable way to say the word as our language slowly erodes and morphs into something entirely different. I wonder how long before "prolly" will become the norm instead of "probably"?
