This is one of the best overviews I’ve seen of how 802.1r works, irrespective of the Mikrotik specific detail. The little comment at the end about fast roaming between the 2.4g and 5g radios of a single AP device is especially noteworthy. Good job
a quick run through of enabling this in the gui would be nice. its as simple as opening the FT tab of the configuration, clicking the down arrow then clicking the new enable box next to "FT Enabled". same for "FT Over DS"
thanks for showing how to do this with some simple steps via CAPsMAN keep it up! 💪💪 ps.: toms, victors and normis are the best understandable and well pronounced guys from mikrotik in front of the camera!

can you update this video with the explanation about capsman wifiwawe2 via wonbox? the capsman for AX is different from the B/G/N/AC. we are very interested to see the new capsman feature and configuration
@@mikrotik thank you so much for your answer, I’m very happy if you have time to show winbox because the new capsman is different from the previous one ( grafic difference and info in winbox ). It would be an understatement that I'm surprised Mikrotik has a proper 802.11rkv. What's left is to make a proper wifi hardware and it will be my go-to instead of Unifi.
Thank you very much TOMS, after one lose day with two hAP ax3 routers I completely config CAPsMAN with one same SSID between they, which work perfectly after this Fast transition option without any interruption and any lose package ! But is there have an way to work with WPA3 PSK authentication ? Thank you again and greetings from Bulgaria !
Can this be achieved using a Chateau 18ax as the managing instance of router OS and another third-party AP that supports 802.11r? or must the APs be Mikrotik APs?
Seems to require all of them to be registered with CAPsMAN but I am curious about this as well - I would love to keep my "old"(Wifi 6) wireless routers and potentially add Mikrotik into the mix.
@@aliancemd I just tested this by turning my old TP-Link Archer WiFi 6 router into AP mode and running it off from my chateau 18ax and it seems to roam seemlessly between the two signals.
@@gtdownhillmedia Is the Chateau and TP-Link Archer using the same SSID(wireless name) with password protection? I saw that they do something special through CAPsMAN where they communicate the authentication of a client on the first AP, to the other Mikrotik devices, so you can re-authenticate on the fly with the other devices.
General Question about Netinstall, is this behavior normal…? If the firmware of a switch isn’t actually broken you can’t use Netinstall to actually reflash the device? I’ve tried this with a CRS326-24S+2Q+RM that had a broken firmware, used Netinstall to flash it to RouterOS 7.11.2, the switch is working fine again. Out of curiosity I tried reflashing the now working switch (followed the same steps with powering the switch on while holding the reset button until it appeared in the Netinstall software) but when clicking install now nothing seems to be happening. ?
Ohh, I got terrible down speeds with Sony mobile when 2.4g only 802.1r AP was kind of far away (-70-75) and FT enabled. PC no problem, xperia crawling (down 1Mbps, up 10Mbps). As soon as FT was turned off, xperia is fast enough again (up/down 20-40Mbps).
I have 3 CAP AX. It works only on ROS up to 7.10.2. On last stable 7.14.2 roaming does not work at all. And till now we do not have 100% functional CAPSMAN with datapath, VLAN, etc.
A little over 1 second? That still seems really slow... I would have expected something like 50ms. Is there room for improvement here still or is this theoretically optimised?
I agree, these roaming time appears way too high. Especially PSK without 802.11r should be a lot faster. It would be kind of funny if Mikrotik themselves made this mistake, but maybe they didn't configure spanning tree properly or roaming is slowed by suboptimal security.connect-priority settings.
Roaming works for interfaces managed by one RouterOS. Does it apply also to roaming between local interfaces not managed by capsman but on the router with capsman and remote aps managed by this capsman?
I managed to confirm that local interface and managed by capsman roam properly. It is not necessary and even not possible when using VLAN to manage all by capsman only.
We check the new AX wifi 3 products and sorry, still not good range of signal and we not move into wifi system to MikroTik - this proove our old theory that mtk good wifi was in past with own protocols.. not now :( Main routers etc is a core for us, maybe a switches but you just enter 2,5GbE and still no 10GbEthernet versions...

I'm using hAP ax2 for almost one year now, latest RouterBoard firmware and OS. No problems with 2.4GHz range or bandwidth with 5GHz (1Gbps layer 1 bandwidth throughput). 100% guaranteed your issues are caused by misconfig or rare hardware issue.

I didn't realise this can be used locally for 2.4GHz-5GHz transitions. Thank you very much!
@mikrotik Please allow us to disable lower data rates ,that would improve perfomance and also roaming further, specially in dense environments.
