I like-ish the class but after dealing with Denam, Catiua and possibly being friendzoned by Ravness, Canopus really deserves to become the new Lancelot. Rune Fencer with Lombardia, some healing and support spells and he shall keep the legacy alive. Also he would totally let other generic hawkmen have the spotlight as the unique guys, he is the army's cool uncle who would do that.
This game has me in a chokehold right now. I come from the o.g. snes version, and I am enjoying this one and all of your videos. Appreciate the insight.
Canopus is straight up the MVP of almost every single map I do. He and Denam are the only units that I will not do fights without (automated AI xp grinds aside)
In the PSP, I used Vartan as a dedicated crossbow user due to inborn flight and better range to reposition than archers. In Reborn, I've found them to be way better as frontline commandos that focus on dragon assassination. Vartan with Dragon Fang and Dragon Slayer with a counter bow? Dragon-destroying MACHINE. Plus, Vartans have the highest total stat growth among non-unique classes in the game. Same STR as Knight Commander, same DEX as gunner, and same HP as a Pirate. Even for my hawkmen priests, I level them as Vartans because of the high HP/STR/VIT growth rates. End up around 1700 HP when all is said and done at lvl50. 2 hawkmen clerics raised as Vartans make PotD a breeze.
They're really nice for flying dragoon builds for sure. I love that crossbow setup because if they get a couple Mag Ups and a Crit, that AoE is a blender.
It can use Fists which are one of the best weapon types in the game. It can give people and itself %dmg boost. And on top of that has great movement to reach cards and climb Barnicia stairs. What more can I ask from this class. I'm suprised people can actually dislike this class 😅
What song was that in the background? Maybe next video put the music added it in the description. idk just an idea UNLESS its the in game music wow I don't even know I guess that is why I am asking lol.
Vartan is the earliest class who can hybrid weapons, but lacks the penetration, MP, and you can't punch and shoot in one turn anyway. Enough stats to be firmly a damage class, but not enough to hurt with cheap ailment weapons without the 100% moves. LUCT made them even stronger because of weapon masteries compensating for penetration, but Reborn has no such crutches. Fist is way better for a flexible disengager because of those dang finisher snipes. Their INT and card access indeed makes them better for those spell weapons, but you might've forgotten to play Vartan completely by then. Crossbow is also strong, perhaps stronger than LUCT because of better access to 2H crossbows. The relic 1H crossbows are probably also good because at that point the 2H chunk of ATK matters a lot less. I still think that RT move cost is ridiculous.
Thankfully you don't get slapped as hard for the long moves this time. The extra gear slots basically up the average RT is what I think is going on there, but that made dual wielders really feel that RT cost this time.
This is more of a Canopus thing, but how d’you reckon he’d do as a dual-wielding dagger/axe Ranger with Double Attack (pretty sure Buccaneers don’t have that one so…)? I get the appeal of crossbows, but still.
Dual wielding is....fine, but slow. Personally I'd prefer to keep the axe and dagger on hand, but use them for their finishers as a Vartan instead. Or sub Double Attack for Evade/Steadfast.
This is good timing as i was looking to rework my Canopus since enterimg chapter 4. I've been running him with a one handed axe and a small bow since he can snipe from rooftops and dip down for buff cards but hes been falling off in damage as better armor has been showing up.
Vartan with dagger and magic for range feels good in the early game, the 6rt per square movement doesn't feel as punishing as psp, thinking of using a 2h xbow still gives me psp ptsd 🤣

Glad to help however I can! Know that feeling, been living it for a little over a year ,🤣

He's really reliable for a lot of situations. The Why of that is often misunderstood, it's why so many will say he 'falls off"
I have a generic birdman warrior with a shield and his only job is to punt my foes into the void.

They want fancy moves, but his moves are himself. Dude's built the same way as a RuneScape build, and that's really neat.
Thanks for these videos! I am playing this game for the first time ever and they have been very helpful.
Glad to help, it can be a puzzling game at first, so I try to clarify where I can. Despite talking like a crazy person.

I really like the 2H Crossbow Vartan just to have someone using 2H crossbows. I miss my LUCT rogue =]
Fair. Zoomy snipey is pretty snazzy, though the Buccaneer also can still do that for Canopus
SRPG is life!
The mobility is nice if you don't mind never taking another turn. (That's hyperbole and I use Vartan Canopus a lot but it's still rough)

Stat gains make shure you level as Vartan but use others as end class
