No english translation can do this song justice. Nothing can compare to the original lyrics, and no one can sing this better than Helen. That is my opinion.
Sarah McGrath this translation does a better job of capturing her despair than the official English one. Problem is of course, that this translation wouldn’t work musically. I feel the official translation just falls flat. It feels clinical in a way compared to the Swedish text which I feel is more personal and simple in its expression, how someone actually would talk. In the English one with phrases like “my life I have placed in thy keep” sounds more like a hymn instead of a desperate woman’s cry for help.
As someone who speaks both languages fluently (plus other 3), I actually disagree and I find your opinion surprising, since you speak both languages too. The translation is pretty accurate in both meaning and tone; it just doesn't rhyme. It's not like the original uses any idiosyncratic words, as is the case with other Swedish songs.
After watching this video for the hundredth time it still gives me chills the way Helen Sjoholm interprets the lyric especially towards the end when faces changes from despair to anger. Incredible.
I am absoultley speechless!!! Wow goosebumps and shivers all over my body i have never heard such a powerful emotional and tragic song like that in my life!!!! Bravooooo sweden for this phenomenal masterpiece!!!!
I saw this muscial in Stockholm when it originally ran in 1995, I was 10 years old and my sister was 14. She cried out of sher emotional overload for an hour after the show was over
Normally I'm not emotional when listening to music but there really is something special with Sjöholm and this song. Helen is so extremely good with facial expressions while singing this song that even though you don't know the language you still understand every tiny part of what she feels.
I saw this when it was in Gothenburg and its been something like 25 years since then, it is still the the best concert I have ever been to and I still cant listen to this song without choking up. Two things stand out, first of all as a Swede its the clarity of the words, every syllable is still present despite being sung which is almost unheard of, the other is the emotion in which she sings, you can literally feel the anger, despair and sorrow in her voice, there might be better technical vocalists out there but when you add in the emotion that she adds to the words she is without equals. Thank you, Thank you!!
Whenever I listen to this masterpiece I remember my Swedish lover ❤ She made me love everything Swedish, the language, the ppl , mentality literally everything. Now we’re apart 💔
Benny Anderson is a musical genius and still highly underrated. I have just listened to this musical (which is perhaps more of a folk opera in the best sense ) for the first time and must say that I know of no other composer from the pop / rock business who can write comparable music. It is deep, touching and in parts so transcendent that you don't need to understand the language (which I don't) to grasp the drama it is telling. A true masterpiece - and what a stunning performance of Helen!
@@jesperepe yes i know that,i also know that most swedes dont believe in god and maybe that is one of the reasons he wrote this song maybe he wanted us to feel the emotions despie our believes
Passionen. Desperationen. Prestationen. Galet. Bara galet...å underbart!
Although I love the English version as well, now listening to the Swedish version I vastly prefer the lyrics in this. Her inner turmoil and doubts of her own faith are much more emphasized here.
I love this song even though without the subtitles I wouldnt understand a word! This looks soo serious. Just like "Gabriellas sång"... Gives me goosebumps.
I'm one of the lucky people that saw her performance together with the original cast, Jöback and Ekborg, at Circus in Stockholm. It's stunning... makes me cry every time!!
I feel every feeling that woman in the background is expressing when Helen is singing this. Luckily I don't have to hold back I can just bawl my eyes out.
Watch the face of the woman in the chorus behind Ms Sjoholm. There is an intensity that reflects the drama of the song, some respectful envy of what is being displayed in front of her, and a relief at the end recognising a completed note and magnificent performance.
puuuh.... This is IT...! maybe it's not the same if you don't understand swedish, but this really hits the core of being human and questioning our existence. and it happens through this tiny little woman in this way... Helen sjöholm , what a woman!!! amazing, stunning, etc.. 7000 stars
As an affirmation of belief, this song is without peer, and it reduced me to tears when I first heard it, and still does every time I hear it. Helen Sjoholm is a singer who gives her all to every song that she sings, but in this one, she has completely surpassed herself. Wonderful!
@@andreasv9472 It's up to interpretation, but if we interpret what she sings logically she did not loose her faith in the end: if God does not exists, she cannot exist.
@@bingobongo3114 More that she needs it for pragmatic reasons, not as real faith. Or that what she has based her identity on is lost, entering a state of nihilism.
I was there at this Minnesota performance and more recently the two at Carnegie Hall last year. Helen is amazing, powerful and touching when she sings. I too cry when I hear this song. I really want the whole video of this minnesota broadcast, please contact me....

This is so amazing beautiful.......What a woman, what power, it comes right out of her heart into mine.!!!!! Tears and so much joy. Thanx for posting this and thanx, Helen!! Greetings from here!
Amazing song composed by Björn and Benny for the musical Kristina from Duvemåla! It`s based on the novel written by Wilhelm Moberg and it depiction the tough and arduous way of a group of swedish emigrants traveling to Minnesota in the midle of the 19th century!
I agree! This video is amazing because I can actually see her face and her acting... I was way up in the balcony at Carnegie Hall. This song is amazing, and Helen is so fantastic in both Swedish and English! I'm jealous of the people that can go see the performance in London next month. :)
So :) I couldn't help noticing the lady behind Helen. I totally share her feelings. Such marvellous talent... I'm in love.
Levente Molnár She, Helen powering that song out does make me cry every time. Yeah woman behind is gripped just as we are. As to the words and meaning, even though I am not religious at all the shear force and passion from some depths of Helen is just totally moving and enthralling. MAGIC.,!
So moving and touching. The lyrics are just so powerful and beautiful in swedish and as a swede living away from sweden it is just so powerful to hear such a powerful song in swedish. The music and lyrics just hits all my emotions and a tear or two did fall when I heard it. Thank you for posting it.
I'd dearly love to see you sing this in a performance here in Kentucky and I'd want a front row seat. You sing from the heart and stir the hearts of so many with this piece of music. So gorgeous and thrilling. Brava to you, Helen. Stupendous performance!
