    Just wanted to say thanks! Had a neighbor with a Deere X720 that did something very similar. Came across your video and decided I would take a crack at it for him. Sure enough, rubber hose on the fuel pump was split down the middle. Got it fixed for him for $5 bucks. Knocked out a good deed, and he thinks I am an ace mechanic. Thanks for putting this information out there. Really saved an elderly man a lot of money over taking it to John Deere and paying them for the repair. I suspect they would have replaced the whole fuel pump unit, plus labor. Keep doing what you are doing!

    My fathers x485 -620 hours had the same issues for several years , after warming up engine miss ,would idle but no power . Followed your videos fixes, but engine miss remained. The cure for my 92 year old fathers x485 was valve lash clearance. I think the valves had slightly recessed, there by decreasing Valve clearance, motor would heat up -valve length expand just enough to keep valve from seating properly and the engine miss once again. Opened up valve clearance several thousands of an inch. After chasing engine miss several years this fixed our engine miss. Remove valve covers,roll engine over to point were rocker arms are loose and check/adjust valve clearance. Amen

    Hi Ed! Your video is still helping today! 8/10/18. Ended up buying the whole new fuel assembly. The pump was not running at all. I did not get to your other vid showing the very tiny fuel strainer at the pump. My pump was clogged and obviously failed. Thanks for doing the videos. I can make my 485 last a lot longer. With these, this will be regular maintenance more frequent now on. Purchased summer 2003 and still going. Same deck and 3 acres every two weeks. Thx! -Terry

      Maybe it was running cause it was just bypassing the filter and sucking straight into the pump?? Might not have run at all if the fuel level got lower. Just guessing.

    I purchased an X485 at an auction and when I got it home, she was running rough after about 30-60 minutes of mowing. I first watched your video about the tune up kit and bought one tuned it up. I still had problems and was ready to take it back to the auction to sell it but I figured let me check your channel and I watched this video and decided to check out the fuel pump and I found the exact problem with the pump being separated from the hose, except I did not find a gas can cap. I replaced the hose and clamps and she purrs like a kitten. Your video not only saved me money but now I get to keep the tractor because its a great one. Your videos are perfect. Next I am following your video to service the mower deck. Thanks again

    I have fixed this problem for my neighbor 2x now. The problem I have found is that using regular fuel line for this repair will make it fail in pretty short order. Most fuel line is not rated for being submerged in gas. The fuel line needs to meet the SAE 30 R10 standard. Most auto parts stores do not stock it, but can order it and have it in store in a day or two. The cost on it is about $20-$30 per foot, but it beats doing this job multiple times. I am about to tear into his for the 3rd time. Hopefully this will be the last.

    I pulled the fuel pump and found the short in tank hose was bad. I was actually disconnected from fuel pump when I removed the assembly. Finding a new piece of fuel line was impossible on a Saturday. None of the parts stores in town had any that was rated for in tank. Ended up going to a motor sports shop where they work on ATVs , Snow machines, wave runners, and the like. They gave me a 4" piece that they said would be OK inside a fuel tank. It runs good now.

    My X530 is doing the same thing. It’ll run for a while and stop. It won’t crank. It it’ll turn over. Once it sits for a while it fires right back up.
    Make sense that the line could be broken or loose etc. When the fuel is sloshing the hose can’t get fuel but when the mower sits still and the fuel settles the hose touches just right again and fires up. The cycle continues
    I’ll take mine apart in a day or 2 and let you know of this was my issue also.

    Back pressure first, may be debris clogging the fuel line. Watch the inline filter until the engine struggles, that will show the gas flow decreasing.

    My Toro developed a fault where it would run for 45-60 mins then start bogging down. Next day it was fine for roughly the same time. Thought it was overheating or coil/diode breakdown but turned out to be an insect in the fuel tank ! Seems it was taking that long to settle to the bottom of the tank after refueling at the start of each session. Never would have believed it given how much the fuel sloshes around on my rough grass.

    Having problems with my X485 surging when warmed up and won't start when its hot. Suspect the same problem. Will be checking out my fuel pump too. $285 +tax for new pump at JD Ouch. They don't see just the pump for this model anymore it seams. Wonder if the pump for the X720, X724, X728, & X 729 (AM136612) will work. Its $115. Thanks for making the video.

      I cant believe how over engineered these are. My 34 year old Craftsman GT briggs twin only costs $15 for carb & fuel pump rebuild kit. Why do they think a garden tractor needs a car style pump when a vacuum operated one will do the same job for many years for far less money?

    Was the new fuel line rated for submersion in the fuel. Big difference in the outer material and regular hose won't last too long in there.

    • @OmFishing

      Yes the fuel line I used was rated for submersion. That is why I had trouble finding it. I had to go to NAPA to get it.

    My x300 has a vented gas cap on the fender. The mower would run for about 20 minutes then stop. The gas cap vent hole in the top of the cap was plugged with dust, etc. causing a vacuum to form as the gas tank emptied. I unplugged the vent hole and the mower keeps running for hours.

    Good video and good of you to try to inform others on how to work on their own equipment. I am just wondering why it would only run for 30 mins with a broken fuel line as I would be inclined to think it wouldn't run hardly at all? I was thinking it might be a fuel pump overheating and shutting down from working hard getting fuel through a dirty filter sock.

    • @OmFishing
      @OmFishing  5 лет назад +3

      You might be right, I cleaned everything as I went and replaced the fuel line. That is something to think about. What was really stopping the engine?

    • @frankvucolo6249
      @frankvucolo6249 3 года назад +5

      angus gillingham I’m thinking that was the vent line. So fuel pump was sending fuel to the carb, through the solid line, but no make up air was getting back on. After some time, you have a vacuum in the tank and the pump can’t pump any more. Like holding your finger on the end of a straw full of water. Won’t flow until you release your finger.

    • @neilscales
      @neilscales Год назад

      @@frankvucolo6249I have the same problem. Mine will immediately restart but then fails a few minutes later. Would a vacuum lock be the same problem?

    • @frankvucolo6249
      @frankvucolo6249 Год назад

      @@neilscales good place to start would be to run it with the fuel cap off and see if it keeps running. If that’s not it, change or temporarily bypass the fuel filter. If that’s not it you could have blockage in the tank outlet or in a line. I suspect the fuel pump is OK if it starts and runs for 10 minutes or more. But you can check it by disconnecting the line and observing the flow while you crank it. Be safe working with fuel issues, please.

    Good find! I thought you would have replaced the return line hose as you had extra. It is strange that it ran for 30 minutes. That loose hose is unlikely to have cause that but perhaps it did. Check Gas cap fuel vent or just loosen the cap at 30 minutes and see if you can hear an air rush or if it continues to run.

    • @OmFishing
      @OmFishing  6 лет назад

      I just started checking everything. When it had spark and still would not start I though fuel. If that was not it and I accidentally fixed it I will take dumb luck. And the fuel line guess i was not thinking clear when I found the other.

      Get a air hose to that cap; blow any crap out of it and use Carb Cleaner on it too; a vapor lock equivalent is what may happen.
