Books discussed:
The Winter Spirits - An Anthology
A River Sutra by Gita Mehta
Summerwater by Sarah Moss
Dusk by Robbie Arnott
Winter in Madrid by C J Sansom
Romola by George Eliot
Phew. She loved Dusk, I think it could be my favourite Arnott. And THAT ending!!!! Love to see you’re on a real Moss kick. I think she’s fab.
Both absolutely brilliant 🤩 ❤️❤️❤️
Welcome back from Sri Lanka. I'd love to go there.
Seasonal reading can be great but I do love the contrast of reading a novel set in a cold, wintry climate in a warm, sunny place!
Sarah Moss and George Eliot are both favourite authors of mine. I read the brilliant Summerwater a rainy Midsummer. Have not read Romola but it sounds interesting so will check it out (I'm partial to dry books and dry biscuits 😄)
Dry books and biscuits 😂😂😂🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚🩵🩵🩵
Kim from the channel "MIDDLE of the book MARCH" is currently preparing to reread Romola by reading Lauro Martines'
"Fire in the City: Savonarola and the Struggle for the Soul of Renaissance Florence."
I am quite interested in the Florentine Renaissance and have read a lot about it. Do you think it would be too academic for me still? I was never at uni, but would have some background knowledge on the time and setting. Florence is my favourite city and Romola seems soo interesting!
I think your interest and background knowledge would carry you through 🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚🩵🩵🩵
Dusk and Winter in Madrid are being added to my list! I've just finished The Glassmaker by Tracy Chevalier which was fantastic. I read Hamnet for January's prompt , looking forward to following them again this year 📚
Wonderful that you are joining the prompt fest 🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚🩵🩵🩵
What a month, Louise! 😍 So glad you’ve enjoyed so many beauties - and the beauty of travelling as well!
I have my next couple of Moss books on hold from the library to pick up, have still only read Summerwater but what. a. book. She is an auto-read author for me already 🤌
Absolutely agree about Moss 👍🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚🩵🩵🩵
The Women's Prize for Non-Fiction!!!!! I'm very excited to see what's on the list. I still haven't read the ones from last year yet but I really enjoyed how enjoyable you found it last year, so I'm eager to see what it's like for you this year.
I’m on hyper alert for the postie 😆🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚🩵🩵🩵
I loved Summerwater! I read it in one sitting and found it mesmerizing. And I was also a bit let down by The Winter Spirits. I thought for the most part that the stories were flat. I am so eager to read Dusk!!
You have such a treat in store with Dusk 👍🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚🩵🩵🩵
First time visiting your channel. I enjoyed your presentation and am intrigued by 3 of the books you mentioned. Dusk, winter in Madrid and Summerwater. I look forward to viewing you again. Thank you.
Welcome aboard! Glad you found my ramblings helpful 🤭
Great reading month! I would have loved to hear more about your vacation!
Thank you. I have put photos on Instagram 😊🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚🩵🩵🩵
Ooh how exciting that you have that special box of books on the way Louise. Can’t wait to see what it contains!
On the look out for that delivery 🚚 🤭🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚🩵🩵🩵
I am so excited for Dusk. I love Robbie Arnott’s books. ❤
Don’t think you’ll be disappointed 🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚🩵🩵🩵
Oh my, your videos are always fun and interesting. I love the homespun o’natural quality of reviews in your personal library. 😽🙏🏼
I'm so glad!😌 🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚🩵🩵🩵
What a great reading month, Louise! I adored Summerwater when I read it a few years ago. So atmospheric!
Im currently reading The Rain Heron by Robbie Arnott. My first of his books. 😊
Loved The Rain Heron 🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚🩵🩵🩵
Thanks, Louise🌷Thoroughly enjoyed this video! 😍📚You mentioned Natasha Pulley as the author of your favourite short story in that winter collection (the cover!!!😍). I loved her novel The Watchmaker of Filigree Street, very whimsical and beautifully written. I heard about Romola a couple of years ago from booktuber Britta Boehler. I love Middlemarch (an all-time favourite) and Daniel Deronda, and know about the history of Florence after Lorenzo de’ Medici’s death, so I bought it as soon as Britta mentioned it, but haven’t read it yet. Thanks for reminding me of it! For the Savidges’ January-prompt I’ve read a book by a great Dutch author, Anjet Daanje, which I don’t think has been translated into English yet (another novel of hers has though), but won the major Dutch literary prize two years ago. It is inspired by the world of Emily and Charlotte Brontë, and has a huge cast of characters, among them twin sisters who lead an extraordinary life as one person.
Love the sound of those twins 👯 🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚🩵🩵🩵
How exciting that you're about to get that large box of books. I really enjoyed watching you read throught the list last year. I'll have to go and check when the announcement is. It must be soon! Oooh, it's next week! I'll be in Melbourne with Readings close by.
Thanks for the reminder about Summerwater. I have it on my shelves but haven't read it yet. It does sound quite a bit like Jan Carson's The Last Resort set in a rainy Irish holiday park.
I read a novel recently that was partly set in Northern India. Alice Nelson's Faithless which I didn't know a lot about going in, but really, really enjoyed it. I'd recommend it for your trip or prereading. Even though it's not an own voice.
I am extremely excited 😊 Thanks for your recommendations 🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚🩵🩵🩵
I Love non-fiction and loved your recommendations last year. Still busy with Eve, which I think it’s an astounding book. I savour about 10 to 20 pages a day because it is so rich in information and I want to do justice to it.
Can’t wait for this year’s selection.
I thought Eve was wonderful 🤩🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚🩵🩵🩵
Just started Summerwater today and love it from the first sentence 💖 thanks for the recommendation
You're so welcome! 🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚🩵🩵🩵
I read Summerwater in January too
Have loved every book I have read by Sarah Moss
Me too 🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚🩵🩵🩵
"I am not neccessarily recommending it, I think it is a very intellectual book." (17:10) This really made me laugh, thank you!
Always glad to prompt laughter 😆 😂🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚🩵🩵🩵
I'm slowly reading Brotherless Night, among others. The only other novel I read set in Sri Lanka was The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida, both set in a violent period of civil unrest. I am happy you enjoyed your visit to Sri Lanka. I remember reading about Leonard Woolf's time in Ceylon before he hooked up with Virginia. Yes, Samonola was a book burning zealot.
I enjoyed both of those novels 👍🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚🩵🩵🩵
I'm a huge Shardlake fan, but have never tried the author's other two novels, so I will have to give WiM a go :)
Please let me know how you get on 🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚🩵🩵🩵
I absolutely agree regarding The Winter Spirits - I had read The Haunting Season last Fall and liked it so much so naturally I picked up this one as well (same array of authors) but it was such a let-down.
Glad it wasn’t just me 🤭🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚🩵🩵🩵
Louise if you’re interested in Girolamo Savonarola I would HIGHLY recommend ‘Lent’ by Jo Walton! An incredibly interesting fantasy novel about his life!
Thank you - I haven’t come across it ☺️🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚🩵🩵🩵
Hi Louise I read The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy for the January prompt.
Wonderful novel 🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚🩵🩵🩵
Thankoufor your very interesting and inspiring video.
I finished the Makioka Sisters by Tanizaki. I think you would enjoy this novel if you have not read it yet.
Thank you, I wasn’t aware of this book 🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚🩵🩵🩵
Best books read in January for me
The House of Broken Bricks by Fiona Williams
Shy Creatures by Clare Chambers
Really keen to get to the Chambers 🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚🩵🩵🩵
I found The Winter Spirits disappointing too. The previous collection, The Haunting Season, is much better. Get yourself a copy for next winter!
Might do… ☺️🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚🩵🩵🩵
📖 🪱 💚
I really want to read Dusk, sounds fantastic- after hearing Simon, and now you raving about it, its out 7th August here, so one to pre order from the library.
Wow Sri lanka and India in the same year!! 😃Amazing!- you lucky thing!
I love the Shardlake books, so hope to read this one at some point.
Middlemarch is one of my favourites too, I thought about reading Romola when I went to Florence last year, but ended up reading A Room With a View instead, which was perfect. Summerwater is on my TBR , and good to hear your positive thoughts, I feel motivated to read it now
Don’t think Dusk will disappoint. Think you made a good call with the Forster 🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚🩵🩵🩵
@@louisesavidgemuses4135 😊Yes, it was definitely a favourite read of 2024 for me, a real treat of a book
