It's rushed where he wants it to be rushed. It slows where he wants it to slow. This piece is a metric in rhythm by George Gerschwin's wish. It is what it is.
I think it may be artificially fast due to recording/playback differences. He probably played it faster than is common today, but I doubt it was as fast in real life as this.
If you change the RUclips playback speed to .85, the normal fade of the notes (without any pedal) sounds about right. That is still "fast" by today's standards.
Love the way he plays it , especially the ending. So many version s and symphonies play it so much slower. Almost anticlimactic actually as that's the most powerful part of the arrangement . His song so he played it how it should he
100 years ago today, on Feb. 12, 1924, George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue premiered. An American genius. Thank you for isolating this pure rendition of Gershwin actually playing Rhapsody in Blue, and as one commentator added, Gershwin is playing the full orchestra rendition on piano. 🎹
I love this suite. It sounds a bit rushed here but nonetheless very emotional and passionate. I lived in Europe in the 80s and would occasionally fly Delta back to the American South, where I am from and Delta had Rap in Blu as the boarding music. On Lockheed L1011s when you could still smoke on planes. This is not just nostalgic for me. A part of my life. Thank you for putting it up.
It may have smoetihng to do with the tech at the time and the length of records back then...? Not sure, but this is 12 min. and that sounds about right for the length of records at that time. And this is a 4-hand version for sure, so it's taken from piano rolls.
Oh! 7:55 to 9:37...😢 This song defines a few of the greatest time periods in history...the 1920s, '30s, and '40s... bygone eras that lives on through lovely pieces of music, like this...it is recalled once again through mine ears and it is sweet. Crafted in 1924, it hypened a gay and lavish time...later provided an America, bonding and gaining happiness from music, with mind- stimulantion and soul-lifting through a Depression. As if the compostion's popularity was over, in 1937 we lose the man who contributed to the world...from critics who mocked and ridiculed this work, it was the people from whom it was rapturously received...it was those people who mourned...those people who remembered. In 1945, the film, "Rhapsody In Blue" made its debut, with Paul Whiteman's lovely version of it, once agian reminding us not to forget. His time on this earth was spent much too soon, yet who are we to hold a dear hearted man, a mastermind, an angel? His impact, as far as I'm concerned, will live on forever! To the Great George Gershwin, I...we love you...😔😚
@@michaelgreen5206 Yes, perhaps I should've been more specific in the actual release date...but I was referring to the impact the song and his music for that matter had when they were going through the Depression...then his death in '37 devastated the nation. I thought it was fitting for a song ridiculed and mocked by critics, was ultimately accepted by the people and those people mourned for him in 1937. The song made me think of THAT particular time. Please excuse me. I'll edit my post.😌😉
This, I assume is the piano roll recording - by which was possible to play over the initial recording to produce a 2 hand - or even 3 hand version. By this method it was possible to produce the true "symphonic" sound that we can hear in this performance.

So nimble and quick you can not even see his hands move, amazing.
nothing better than listening to a song being performed by the author! beautiful

u mean piece!?!???

Wow how is he such a damn perfect pianist... absolutely astonishing.
He seems to be playing it very fast, almost like runs in places. I'm loving it!!

Gershwin was a genius. We lost him too soon.

Absolutely magnificent.
Il mio preferito in assoluto da sempre e per sempre!
Tremendous. Always so awe inspiring to hear gershwin on the keys playing
Wow! Nothing beats the real thing.
i believe that this was the original tempo
later arrangements slowed it down and made it more symphonic
Gershwin played two parts in this and later it was edited over each other to make is sound like he is playing it all together
Awesome piece of music by the author himself!!
He plays the piano as if it is an orchestra.
Indeed
i think he for sure is on par with rach and horowitz. one of the greats of that era

Are you sure it wasn’t United? Theme song for United for decades. Can’t see Delta promoting this.
I think United is the only airline that has it for their boarding music, commercials and safety videos

Released in 1924, not the 1930's.

Is this from the piano rolls? Remarkable they were, but edited.

Does his estate still get royalties from his music?
Wasn't this a piano roll?
What is a piano roll ?
Think of a player piano which has a a cylindrical shaped roll installed inside the piano to render the tune.
Nagyon jó, de a nagyzenekari előadása az igazi.
Too fast. Not obvious?!?!??
Amazing performance, terrible haircut.
Mister Bean did the haircut🤣
Superb. But not as good as Levant playing it.
