I've been playing Final Fantasy 8 recently and I'm shocked just how long it took me to actually start enjoying the game. Part of that is due to it's literally sleep-inducing opening. FF6's opening: magic is dead, other than this brainwashed girl. Melancholy mech walk through the snow. FF7's opening: holy shit you're riding on top of a train and you're going to go do some domestic ecoterrorism. FF8's opening. School. For like an hour and a half until the game FINALLY gets interesting with the Dollett invasion used for the SeeD exam.
One of my favorite first levels is Caves from Tomb Raider (1996), it has a lot of huge empty rooms to get used to its controls and, simple switch-opens-a-door mechanics, simple platforming, and weak wildlife enemies and traps, and easy secrets. It shows almost everything Tomb Raider has to offer in the most basic way. On the other side, however, Tomb Raider II has the audacity to put so many difficult traps and platforming right from its first level, The Great Wall, that level is insane, but it makes you feel badass when you know how to get past every trap.
I really am starting to love this channel! It’s all so well made and entertaining! Personally I love Skyward Swords opening. They way it sets up the story and introduces you to the hub is beautiful and it really makes you think that the game is just this island but when it gets revealed that it’s so much larger it fills me with awe. I’m a fan now so expect to see a comment on every video:)
Some great FPS first levels that come to find is Halo CE mission Pillar Of Autumn. The first part of you getting to the Bridge teaches you how to look and move around a 3d space in a first person view. Along the way the Covenant are attacking in the darkness. Then after you meet with Captain Keys you get a weapon you get your first bit of combat. You can pick up the aliens weapon, but you can only have 2 weapons total at any time. If you use a plasma rifle against an Elite, you may notice it knocks out it shields faster than the AR. The couple of rooms teaches you combat scenarios like back smacking Elite for an easy kill, using grenades, and fighting enemies at a different elevation. Really great mission. Another one is Battlefield 1. As soon as you install the game and start it for the very first time you are immediately thrown into the games prolonged which has you playing as different allied soldiers for about 15 min. You get a taste of shooting enemies, holding onto position, and being in a viechle. But most importantly it sets the tone for the game. It will be dark, chaotic, and messey. In a way also cinematic. And finally Titanfall 2 the Gauntlet. You get a quick jog of the main events from the last game. Practice shooting and moving. Then you have to run the course, like in MW2 S.S.D.D the Gantlet has you hone your skills of moving and shooting, but now in Titanfall 2 expertly crafted movement system (TF2>Apex). It's crazy seeing speed runs of it and sub 20 seconds runs
So glad I subbed. Each one of your videos is so entertaining and high quality. It still surprises me that you only have 6,000 subs, you deserve way, WAY more
Found your channel today. Really enjoying it so far! One thing about the opening of TP: I think one of the most charming aspects of TP is that it is just an Epic adventure. I am not shure if it could convey the same vibe if you dont have any connection to the characters.
Thanks for the kind words and that’s true. I feel like Twilight had the biggest supporting cast out of any of the games or at least it seemed like the most time was spent of them compared to the others
I swear you're the only person on RUclips that lists all the music you used in the description, everyone else wants to keep anyone from enjoying good beats.
6:34 I absolutely LOVE when games do this. A similar introduction style that's equally as cool is when the game starts you out with nothing at the lowest level, but pins you helplessly against the final boss in the game to give you a taste of how powerful you'd have to be to beat said boss. A great example of this is Skyrim where dragons suddenly come back to life and Alduin (the final dragon boss) burns down the entire city you're in just as you're about to get executed and you slip away to start your training to take down the infestation of dragons plaguing the world; finally taking down Alduin dozens or even hundreds of hours into the game. Mechanics like these substantially decrease the burnout and boredom of longer titles by keeping you hooked on potential power and, in my opinion, is one of the best ways to start a game.
Loving your videos! Persona 5 had an excellent "opening level" (though it's hard to categorize it as such due to the game's structure and length). I'll never forget being introduced to the characters, your first antagonist, and entering the preliminary dungeon for the first time.
Could you do a video about video game soundtracks? Im an absolute sucker for music which plays a huge role in why I remember games like MGR, Zelda, Mega Man, TF2, minecraft, ect.
twilight princess intro does have a puzzle but it is just for rupees so it is easy to skip. the other problem with the intro before the first proper dungeon is that you have to go through faron woods open section 3 times in the game. yes it recontexualizes, but it gets repetitive here and the third part is just following a monkey through poison mist.
I think smw does´nt get enough credit for having 2 "first levels" one of them showcases the games secrets areas and unique mecanics, and the other one is more regular mario, but still shows what the game (in terms of control and platforming) has to offer.
Ok, no. I take back my thumbs up. You will not insult my Twilight Princess and Okami like that. They are literally the best games on their systems and they are perfect in every aspect.
BOTW's introduction is pretty good too, the game just kinda dumps you in a big area with barely any explanation, with barely any direct hints on how to play the game aside from your main mission. You have to survive on your own with only the things you find and with your own skills, and oh boy that you'll die a LOT if you suck. It's a perfect setup for the rest of the game, and it's nice that the Zelda Team has learned that handholding players is just plain worse compared to learning things by yourself.
I feel like sonic is the opposite of twilight princess where instead of a boring tutorial sonic has a really good first level and then the game gets worse and worse as it goes on
Personally, I didn’t like the first level of Spider-Man ps4. The combat controls can be a bit much at first and without much explanation it’s a lot. Because of that I lost interest after the first level. (After two months I returned to the game and realized what an amazing game it is, don’t worry) (:
So, Hollow Knight's opening is pretty slow and kinda misleading.. which is weird since i like the game so much. King's Pass (where you start) is an area that you'll never actually go back to, really, and is boring visual-wise. It does teach you well though. And the big door is cool. Dirtmouth is literally empty apart from a single old NPC, mainly because you have to find the NPCs so they go to the town Forgotten Crosswords is better, but it still suffers from similar issues as the first 2 areas. At least you get to fight bosses in here, and you get a spell, so you can get to Greenpath After Greenpath, the game actually is visually exciting and unique, but before it's just dank, dark, black, mostly empty caves. So yeah, not the greatest opening. Opening cutscene is good tho.
8:30 *laughs in KH2* the first time i played that game's opening i absolutely loved the second half but its boring as fuck thank god you can skip cutscenes in the original ps2 game
Among us vid next or unsub
Never agreed with something more.
Are you Jewish by and chance tim?
Sheesh....
Really enjoying the content. It's awesome to see more obscure stuff like this. Good to see I'm early for once.

7:20 good point, many older tough games lure you in at first and then stomp you in the second or third level/area

My god the Liver King meme was so fitting, I love it
Good video.👍 I like Mega Man X's 1st tutorial-styled level. If you make a follow up video you should include that.
So glad I subbed. Each one of your videos is so entertaining and high quality. It still surprises me that you only have 6,000 subs, you deserve way, WAY more
7:44 that transition was so clean

Great video man keep it up 👍
It’s like you just spawned out of no where but yet all of your videos are so good so I obviously can’t complain.
I swear you're the only person on RUclips that lists all the music you used in the description, everyone else wants to keep anyone from enjoying good beats.
That thumbnail is clean man. Lovely work, keep it up

RUclips reccomended doing gods work again. Loved the video keep it up
Cheers man, the algorithm has it’s moments
Great video, Kerm! Keep it up!
I doubt anyone would disagree about 007 Nightfire having a kickass first level
I'm just a little basic but fr ima just gonna say Uncharted 2! That snowy train hanging off the side of that cliff was such an iconic start!
Loving your videos! Persona 5 had an excellent "opening level" (though it's hard to categorize it as such due to the game's structure and length). I'll never forget being introduced to the characters, your first antagonist, and entering the preliminary dungeon for the first time.

-Pampa
Great comment, Pampa. 👍
-Possesses
Nice vid and nice to hear Fife Dog 👍
another classic
2:08 Premise-wise it gives me the same vibes as the CS:GO tutorial level.
MGS V is an amazing game but you have to watch nonsensical cutscenes and slowly crawl through an hospital for two hours before the actual game starts.
Could you do a video about video game soundtracks? Im an absolute sucker for music which plays a huge role in why I remember games like MGR, Zelda, Mega Man, TF2, minecraft, ect.
Great idea! I’ll add it to the list

Doom eternals first level is basically the game over or worst case scenario for any other game
Ok, no. I take back my thumbs up. You will not insult my Twilight Princess and Okami like that. They are literally the best games on their systems and they are perfect in every aspect.
great video, subbed. Which software do you use for editing?
Thanks man, Adobe Premiere
Haven't I seen this
You lost me at SA2
That game is a freaking masterpiece

Fucking banger of a channel
I was expecting rdr2 to make an appearance... i guess i was wrong
