No Elton had a bet with Lennon. When Elton called by to see John who was in his recording studio in Hollywood, Lennon played him 4 songs he was working on. Elton really took to whatever gets you through the night, asked if he could add a little piano to it and a few backing vocals, it sounded great and Elton told Lennon if you release it, it’s going to be a No1 hit. Lennon wasn’t so sure so Elton had a wager with Lennon.
He said if it gets to No1 you have to come and play it on stage with me at my concert at Madison Square Garden.
It got to No 1 and Lennon honoured the bet and came on to perform it much to the pleasure of the audience who were totally unaware of what they were about to witness. It would be the last time John Lennon would ever perform live.

This song REALLY touches my heart because it was it was John Lennon's LAST recording he EVER did with "Elton John" before he passed away. Plus they were also VERY good friends!! It's hard to believe that it's been 45 YEARS since this song came out!! The saxophone solo ALSO added some style during the song too. John Lennon had a VERY unique way of writing music...especially with OTHER PEOPLE!! However... the memories will LIVE ON FOREVER!!

On this day in Music - 16 Nov 1974
John Lennon was at No.1 in the US singles chart with 'Whatever Gets You Through The Night.' Elton John played on the session and made a deal with Lennon that if the song reached No.1, Lennon would have to appear on stage live with Elton. Lennon kept his side of the deal and appeared live with Elton. They played three songs together: ‘I Saw Her Standing There,’ ‘Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds’ and ‘Whatever Gets You Through the Night.’ Backstage after the concert, Lennon got back with Yoko Ono after a temporary split.

#onthisday 31 July 1974, Elton John joined John Lennon for an overdub session at Record Plant NYC for what would become their #1 single.
John: I was fiddling about one night and Elton John walked in with Tony King of Apple - you know, we’re all good friends - and the next minute Elton said, ‘Say, can I put a bit of piano on that?’ I said, ‘Sure, love it!’ He zapped in. I was amazed at his ability: I knew him, but I’d never seen him play. A fine musician, great piano player. I was really pleasantly surprised at the way he could get in on such a loose track and add to it and keep up with the rhythm changes - obviously, ’cause it doesn’t keep the same rhythm… And then he sang with me. We had a great time.

One night, I was out in the cold because I had arrived a few minutes late to the shelter. I had given a reading of some poetry at The Last Elm open mike, in Burlington Vermont. It was already September. I had hitched from Readfield, Maine to meet up with Carey Stephens as he finished working the apple harvest south of Burlington, along Lake Champlain.
So anyway, I went under a porch of some old house, lay on the dried leaves in the corner made by two walls. There was another fellow also out in the cold. The night was so cold it was hard getting any sleep. Then we heard music. It was drifting over a field from an auditorium on the campus of University of Vermont. It so happened that C&C MUSIC FACTORY was doing a live concert.
We got through the night somehow.

A natural B side. Knocked together in the studio when nothing much else was going on, as these things so often were. Too good to be an out take.

This song sounds better than today's music. 45 years old and this song still rocks!👍👍👍👍

Shawn Malone there is good music today, it's just not on the radio or considered mainstream.

Shawn Malone, Today there is no real music. Those days are gone, with a few exceptions. Rare is it to find someone with real talent. Everyone uses enhancements today, so anyone and everyone can get up there and it's all a mask... a fake charade. And the songs are crap. I stay in the past... where the real stuff was.

Arran Nelson That’s clearly something someone extremely out of touch would say.

I like how the chorus progresses: "Whatever gets you through the night/Whatever gets you through your life/Whatever gets you to the light"
