    *Love* that you specifically mention the total volume of your gear. Such useful info that no one else seems to mention. :)

    I gotta jump in to defend sleeping bag liners! I really dislike sleeping in clothes and my silk liner is a huge upgrade for both comfort and warmth. It weighs nothing and takes up no space, plus if its a mild night I can sleep in just the liner.

    I just bought a zpacks plex solo tent and the pole for my bikepacking trips. I still have my 4 ortlieb panniers but at 65L total volume I'm trying to reduce the volume and weight to be able to take the train or bus when needed on a tour. With everything empty on the bike with my racks and fenders I'm bumping close to 50lbs which is the limit for amtrak. One tour I'd love to do is ride from LA to Quebec City or at least take amtrak up to the US/Canada border then bike the rest of the way. Via Rail doesn't have bike or baggage service between Toronto and quebec. One thought is take train to Albany then bike up the EST to border...plenty of camp grounds between Albany and US border compared to Albany and NYC. Think fall time for the changing colors of the trees.

    Great breakdown and I really appreciate the transparency about your the brands that you work with! If you're interested in a multipurpose cooking setup, check out the Vargo Bot or Bot HD. I use the HD to carry tools on my bike's down tube, carry 1L of water when needed, and use it to cold soak/cook food. By far one of my favorite pieces of kit.

      I found that pot years ago, and then when I went to buy it, it was off the market for some reason. Glad to see that its back, I have wanted to get one for ever. the seal is completely watertight?

    Did you try to balance your gear wt across your bike? I have a surly bridge club XL 27.5 bike that I set-up for touring with panniers but after seeing your videos I'm converting over to a bikepacking setup. The one thing I haven't changed is my tent...a 2p naturehike that weighs 6lbs. Considering getting the dursten x-mid 1p tent since I has enough room for my 6'2" frame and light weight. My current gear wt is 44lbs but I know I can drop 7lbs by leaving my helios camp chair and getting a lighter wt tent. Packed 5 days of mountain house meals in my revelate design full frame bag. Got the Salty Roll for the handlebar Aeros cradle and have a messenger front rack and rear rack. Getting a 14L saddle bag soon.

      I have more weight over my front wheel. But not that much, heaviest items went into the frame bag, things like food and fuel. So overall it’s fairly balanced.
      This was primarily an accident though. My main goal was to put things I needed through the day in the most accessible area and that just happened to be my saddle bag.
      Zpacks makes a great light weight 1 person tent called the Altiplex designed to accommodate taller people, worth a look depending on your budget.

    Any issues storing your potentially wet tent together with your camp clothes and sleeping bag inside your salty roll?

    • @MoveWithMurph
      @MoveWithMurph  3 месяца назад +2

      Definitely! When its damp, not too much of an issue, after heavy rain I would just strap it into the harness outside of the salty roll, it’s a bit awkward, but gets the job done

    I love Darn Tough socks, but if you think yours never get smelly, you might want to have your sense of smell checked. :)

      @7barny7 thanks! The only thing original in that bike at this stage is the frame and fork. Some weird Frankenstein build I bought used when I was in New Zealand. I am motivated to switch it to drops, but I have hydronic breaks, and that’s an expensive switch.
