    Great demos.. definitely getting me that ESR tester. Back in college as a bored lab instructor I used to take a random resistor, hook it to a power supply and slowly ramp the current until the light show began... or the magic smoke came out... or both.

    Thank you for this video. Your recommendations are highly thought of. I was wondering if you felt that the push/turn/push/turn interface was annoying (as compared to just two knobs for V and A)?

    Tester is actually a modified clone of Karl Heinz's Transistor Tester open source project. In order to save money and protect me from a piece of crap postal service I built one myself, gotta agree - a great tool to have. And, I dunno 'bout this one, but the original design has MENU, which you can open by long press of a TEST button (when the screen is active). In that menu, there are even more features - in-circuit ESR tester, freq. counter, freq. generator, 10-bit PWM, and a self-calibrating option.
    I suggest you go try and see if there is a menu; if it's there you will be even happier having this tester

    • @RickRaulston

      Tried long hold on mine. Nuthin'. :( Need a good in-circuit ESR for cheap. Suggestions?

    • @mrjohhhnnnyyy5797
      @mrjohhhnnnyyy5797 8 лет назад

      Rick Raulston That's unfortunate :( Original software has a whole menu there, I can make a video showing that if you want. For the ESR meter - I bought a cheap analog multimeter, gutted it out and used the movement for a little ESR meter circuit. It's simple&cheap, you can build it yourself; it has no trouble with in-circuit measurements.

    Thanks for the info, I purchased the ESR meter you recommended and there wasn't any documentation. I needed the ESR meter to test caps in my old Fender amp, and another amp that was fried. I'm also hoping to repair other things too, but I'm not clear on exactly what it means for the cap to be bad, aside from higher resistance. Or somewhere in between. Is there some graph or scale available?
    Also, appreciate you speaking distinctly and staying on tract. This is a skill that is sadly missing in a lot of videos.
    regards,
    -Peter

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  7 лет назад +2

      What you need to do is first make sure the capacitor has been fully discharged before testing it. You need to look up data sheets online for the electrolytic capacitor you're testing. The data sheet will show "Typical" ESR values for a good capacitor. There are also charts online showing "Typical" ESR values based on size. Thanks!

    Well, I purchased the power supply and am very pleased with it. There appears to be a feature not covered in your video. Normally, if you turn the power supply on, the default operation shows off (meaning no power to the leads). To change the default operation, press the on/off button for 5 seconds. This will show dOn meaning power is supplied to the leads at power up. To change it back, simply press the on/off button again for 5 seconds. dOf will appear. I prefer to have it "default off" to ensure I have the correct voltage/current set before I use it.

    I had a look at the picture but it didn't answer my question, why I'm concerned is, if using an earth clip with a dso on a circuit powered by this psu, one could have a shorting problem to mains earth equivalent to the difference between the two potentials. It looks like very good value though and good specs.. Maybe someone commenting might know ? I did see an earth lead inside, but no idea if its tied to -neg.

    Thanks for the video, it helped me decide which of the affordable ESR meters to get. I got the MK-328, but mine doesn't automatically power off, I have to disconnect the component and press the test button. Only then, after finding no component is connected it powers off.

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  8 лет назад +1

      Strange. My unit powers off with the component connected. You didn't test a capacitor w/o discharging it first, did you? That could damage the unit.

    • @I967
      @I967 8 лет назад +2

      Yes yes I did discharge. Specifically for that purpose I have built a special 5W 22K capacitor discharger doohickey with alligator clips on both ends. Anyway, the tester tests without problems, transistors, diodes, resistors, all seems to be okay. Just doesn't usually power off (although it did power off a couple of times, I don't know what to think of this).

      The unit is thermally protected. I operated the unit for quite a while under a 3-5A load and all the housing did was get a little warm. The switching transistors/mosfets are connected to a huge heat sink, which is the aluminum housing. Look at the inside. The link is in the video description area.

    I have that ESR tester. The leads are garbage and will break off and have to be resoldered regularly. They are also very hard to find decent replacements for, since they use the 2mm banana jack. There is also no room in the actual device to install standard banana jacks. The cheap battery plug feels like it will probably break after changing out the battery a few times. The basic functionality of it is great though.

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  7 лет назад +1

      I had the same problem, and the fix is simple. When the wire breaks off, you re-solder the wire in position then fill the area around the wire with clear silicone and allow it to cure overnight.

    • @w8lvradio
      @w8lvradio 7 лет назад +1

      electronicsNmore Thanks! I hope you show video with more experiments with the waveform generator and the oscilloscope, as way too many videos on youtube just are intros for college first time hookup and go like this: "This is an oscilloscope... This is a signal generator... We hook them up with these cables together, and by fiddling these knobs we get a sine wave, and a square wave of Nth Hertz..." And then they say something like you can use these for lots of things. And then they never show you any of these "lots of things" that you use the scope and the waveform generator for... Maybe they show you a trigger. But actual uses? Not too much on that: How to check components, how to diagnose a circuit. How to use them to build up a circuit to do something.
      All the Best!
      Sincerely,
      Bill Pietschman (W8LV)

    Is there a difference between an ESR meter and in-circuit ESR meter?

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  7 лет назад +2

      Testing "in-circuit" is never fully reliable. There's always a chance that other components will affect the reading. That being said, I've used this meter to test electrolytics in-circuit with no problem at all.

      Hi Ron. You won't find another tester that does all the things this one does for less money.

    Voltlog tested one and ripple/noise was 50-55 mV .. so I answered my own question below, hence they are lying, but compared to many that is actually quite good... (Jeez it's the first thing you should test on these things).
    To hell with these switchmodes my next psu will be a good linear job.

    I have been looking at the power supplies on Bang Good for some time, and have looked at this one before, but here in the UK, we use 240V, this voltage seems to be a problem with the BG site, as most of there mains gear is only upto 220v.

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  8 лет назад

      110/120v or 220/240v. Either works.

    • @SPIDER1966ENGLAND
      @SPIDER1966ENGLAND 8 лет назад

      forgive me for being a little thick, but if you put 240v, into a 220v item, I'm sure you will blow it. The only way I can see of being able to use these low rated power units, would be to use another power sources to lower the power I am using?

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  8 лет назад +1

      Nick Stevenson
      Incorrect. Voltage always varies. In the USA I have seen the 120V line vary between 110 & 130V. I have seen 240V range between 220 & 260. Your concern is unfounded. I have many people buying these units from the UK. :-)

    • @1pcfred
      @1pcfred 7 лет назад

      Search the term AVR transistortester on the net. All those multi component testers are variations on that design. Usually shorting all three leads together puts them into calibration mode. Then you need a 100 uF capacitor for part of the test.

    Why a MERS-100 is more expensive? I mean, what is the difference? In comparisson, why should and why I shouldnt choose this product? I want to know the defects, if any... Why did the tester devour the batery? Nice Vid! Thanks!

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  7 лет назад +1

      When filming, there are always interruptions by landscapers, barking dogs, etc. So I had to film certain parts a few times, which is why the battery gets drawn down. For the money, you cannot beat the tester. You cannot expect perfection from a 30 dollar tester. Thanks for watching!

      Have any video using this on in-circuit capacitors?

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  7 лет назад +1

      The normal procedure is testing the component in-circuit, if the reading is "close" to the value of the component, then you're OK. If the value comes back way off, then you need to desolder one lead and test again. No tester is 100% when testing in-circuit. Problems can occur when components are placed in parallel. All this being said, I have no problems with the tester.

    It is a nice AVR Transistortester, but it is pretty pricey. You can get kits of essentially the same circuit for a lot cheaper.

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  7 лет назад +2

      A ready to use tester is pricey at 30 bucks? I don't think so.

    • @1pcfred
      @1pcfred 7 лет назад

      The kits are not too hard to assemble. Some of the premade testers are pretty cheap too. But the very cheapest of them don't have a precision voltage reference in them. They instead just have a zener reference. The crappiest prebuilt one I can find right now on Ali is $7.22 A decent kit is $1.88+$2.84 shipping. Of course for the low price there is no case.

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  7 лет назад +4

      Most people already have too many projects going on, so buying a kit, which lacks certain features, to me is a waste of time.

      Clearly you're not a supporter of all my hard work on this channel based on how you're going out of your way to try and get people not to buy the very good, but inexpensive tester shown in this video. You do realize that this channel is able to remain active(and help countless people) because of the small commission I receive from products shown on this channel. You're trying to deprive me of that support. I keep track of good and bad viewers. Those that appreciate my hard work, receive assistance, and those that don't, get placed on a list. Happy Easter.

    That tester is probably based on an Atmega328 microcontroller (which you can also find in many Arduino boards) which might explain why it says: MK-328 on the front. For those curcious to have a look inside the power supply, go here: www.ebay.com/itm/AC-110V-220V-to-0-32V-5A-Precision-Adjustable-DC-Digital-Switching-Power-Supply-/121633720324 and scoll down a bit.

    O.K. I have to tell you that at first I loved Banggood ... good prices. Now not so much. After fighting confusing forms to fill out I finally ordered the tester and then they put in two orders for me. I went to chat to fix this ASAP, and find I am #29 in the queue and my wait time will be 33 minutes. How awful is this? I'll have to remember this if I can save less than a buck using this place. Good luck if you try to order through them.

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  7 лет назад +3

      Sorry to hear about your issue, BUT it sounds like you screwed up and you're trying to blame Banggood for your mistake. There's nothing confusing about placing an order.There's nothing awful about having to wait to speak to a representative that long. I've had to wait that long with many companies in the past. Banggood has become a very popular website, so many people have questions or issues to resolve with agents. No company is perfect, if you think so, then you're highly mistaken. Problems happen with Ebay and Amazon as well, I know that for a fact.

      Banggood is my go to site for electronics and other stuff as well. Really appreciate your well done videos. I was looking at the MK 328s when I found your site, glad I came across it. I bought a Mk 328, but not from BG, found one for $22. US and free ship. I do intend to buy the PSU the next time I get paid. Currently using the equipment to repair/modify electric guitars. Just wound my first Tele bridge pickup and needed a way to test inductance. Thanks again. WooHoo.

      Unless you plan on using the power supply for high frequency audio applications, I'd use a switching PSU like I show in this video. Linear units are heavier, and lower noise, but for me, I'm happy with the switching type.
