My three stepped-progressions in fingerpicking went: Landslide - Solsbury Hill - Never Going Back Again. Buckingham cannot be beat! (See too: Stephanie)
Funnily enough, someone else has posted a lesson on Nico 'these days' - Adrian on 'anyone can play guitar UK', the only other teacher I support on Patreon...and his lesson this week was on essential rhythm strumming patterns, so between Eric & Adrian, there's all the guidance I need. Great stuff!
This is the first technique I ever learned on guitar thanks to my dad, looking on my playing now I think it has had quite a lot of influence on my musical experience. Great lesson!
Wild! I've been on a journey this month - it began with Here There and Everywhere --> playing the vocal harmony parts and noticing that Bb, and a brief detour into pretty songs which had me working on Que Vida and thinking about L.A., and then my subconscious pulled up The Warmth of the Sun --> playing with that got me arpeggios and thinking about the Wrecking Crew which led me to Glen Campbell --> so I decided to finally pick up a collection; I check out a recent tidy Greatest Hits and lo and behold! Track 16: "These Days"! So then I come here two days later, and here you're opening with it! Synchronicity! Thanks for showing how you build up Rhiannon the right way. I am really intimidated by Lindsey Buckingham - the music can bounce along so lightly but when you peek under the hood it is terrifyingly well-built!
I've been hoping for this lesson for a while. I'm one of those people who won't even play a guitar if I don't have a pick. It's embarrassing. Little by little, Eric Haugen, you'll fill in all of my blind spots until I finally rise up to fulfill my destiny as a Competent Guitar Player. Then comes world domination (after a quick vengeance campaign upon those who have wronged me). Wicked awesome dude, indeed! Now once again, slowly... the index finger goes here and the middle finger goes here....
Saw the title. I have 18 minutes to kill. Looked at the length of this. 16:26. Ehh I’ll check it out. Then I saw, IT’S ERIC!!!!! Hell yes I’ll check it out! Thanks Eric Beautiful lead at the end. Sweet sounds. ❤️
The methodical approach to on and off beats with thumb and fingers is the only way until your fingers go there before your brain tells them to. Takes a long time but is worth it. Luckily I had a teacher who made me master it. Did recording today on banjitar and octave mandolin, these old fingers still remember... Thanks for pointing this out.
Thanks for the Travis tips! I tried retaking guitar theory a few years ago just to learn flamenco style after I moved on I realized that my flamenco style technique training has morphed into Travis picking and here I never heard the term.
I use the 3rd level a lot, my thumb just sticks to the tempo like it is its job, I have to say that I like that Squier Starcaster a lot, I was fighting against myself just to not go and buy one hahaha, nice video, super useful.
That third one is sooo hard, but but would be such payoff to play Rhiannon! The first two have become muscle memory over the years, so that third one will be an extra challenge. I’ve always had trouble playing finger-style on electric. The slightly tighter string spacing and looser string feel have always be hard for me. Thank you, Eric! ✌️😌🎸
i was waiting for this it is perfect matching where i am now with fingerpick . i can finnaly play Dust in the wind full speed and more easy fingerpick songs.. I do this now for 2 months play only with fingers and thumb and i even dont think about the plectrum anymore .. However if i play punk or rock or metal i maybe better get my plectrum 🙂 Thanks again Eric Oh what are you doing at 9:42 was what i was doing too and my friend said i got to hold my thumb straight so the fingers are planted on the strings .. It feels little bit akward in the begin but if you are used too the straight thumb you never need a thumb pick anymore.. For example if you play with the thumb pick then you have also your thumb straight ..
Great timing on this! I’ve recently started to almost exclusively play fingerstyle acoustic. Started with some Clapton Unplugged tune. Working on “Freight Train” now. I think I’ll give Rhiannon a shot next!
Hi Eric - I notice you use those Herco thumbpicks. I love them, but I wish Jim Dunlop didn't make them out of such a flimsy celluloid. If you know anyone there, would you suggest to them to produce a nylon or more durable celluloid version of them
As usual great for all levels. Gives beginners something to work on or think about with basics they can use now. In your description you left off the natural finish guitar/ black headstock - playing Rhiannon? Sweet looking guitar. I have been listing for the Vox Bobcat since I first heard you play it. I guess the Classic Vibe Starcaster( already on gotta have list) first as it is more in reach, lol.
In your description(sound tools) Sweetwater does not have that sweet deep wine red(I'm guessing) Starcaster. That's the one I want! You inspire not only my mindset on playing but your taste in guitars parallels mine.
I love the Travis picking lesson. Any chance for a Scotty Moore lesson? Danny Gatton had a really great VHS lesson called “Danny Gatton’s Licks and Tricks” or something. He did mystery train in the hybrid picking style. Piano style picking too. Such a great resource. Thanks for everything Eric.
Your lessons are fantastic, any chance of covering High Life? Nigerian or Ghanaian style guitar? It's something I've been trying to learn more about for a while.
Such a cool dang guitar today hellllll yea man this aint the place for shreddy licks LOLL!! I bet you can throw down a pretty sick one!! every time im gettting out of control i just breathe a bit and slow everything down
I can play this way, more or less, as long as the chord shapes remain static. It falls apart for me when the melody moves around on the upper strings while keeping the bass notes going -- think Elizabeth Cotten's "Freight Train".
Thought that in the beginning of learning/playing guitar that I never should have used anything but my fingers... But because the path was ignored for the most part, my alternate picking arpeggios are better.🤣 At least that's what I tell myself 😊 Yeah...I should work on this 😉👍👍 😎✌👍❤🖖
I personally use a pick with my middle finger nail - brighter than just flesh of the thumb and index or middle and I feel like a can play stronger/more volume while also be able to seamlessly go right into the slashing / heavier pick strumming… My first guitar was an SG (thanks to Robbie Krieger) who was a bonafide flamenco player really. If you’re trying to learn this style today I recommend Adrianne Lenker’s stuff with Big Thief or her solo work as well - beast of a Travis style picker
What do they call it when you just randomly throw your fingers at the strings and you’re adhd riddled brain is just trying to keep up? Love the lessons as always.
I love your playing but disagree. I could play come back baby and deep river blues as examples. Where is that category? Obviously I feel you have not spent a lot of time fingerpickun' oh great one
Eric is making high quality professional content that's free on RUclips. He is not claiming to be the best finger picker in the world! You're free to disagree but why not post your content so we can see how you play.
I have had a stroke to both sides of the brain heart operation. Colon cancer operation ballooning of the arteries. 4 stints experimentatian with bad drugs from Dr s. So yesterday I played guitar for 1st time in 3 years. So I could send a few links to my playing prior to stroke as right side wasvparalyzed. That said I appreciate your support of a great player and teacher. I just did not like an improper reference to the fingerpixkin strategy and levels of expertise
@ralphditchburn1456 I don't remember hearing Eric say that these are the ONLY 3 levels, from beginning to expert...maybe I need to rewatch so I can critique him harder.../s
My three stepped-progressions in fingerpicking went: Landslide - Solsbury Hill - Never Going Back Again. Buckingham cannot be beat! (See too: Stephanie)
This channel has improved my technique and patience with guitar making me a much more comfortable player
Oh hell yea Adrian is always great!
I really like Alex Farran (for jazz), and Shut up Play (for classic riffs)
Level 4 - Whatever sorcery Tommy Emmanuel does.
He plays almost classical guitar but with a great groove and a couple of gimmicks for the show. He is great.
I @@TheHesseJames
Check out Mike Dawes, too
Level 5 - Scott Anderson
NICO!!!!! What!?
There is one person I’ve ever met who I may have talked about that song with
And here is Eric giving a lesson on it.
U rule
amazing song
Great explanation, Eric! I got confident with Travis picking by playing Julia and Dear Prudence for hours on repeat
This is the first technique I ever learned on guitar thanks to my dad, looking on my playing now I think it has had quite a lot of influence on my musical experience. Great lesson!
My first lesson too, clear back in 1973! 😮
I so love your taste in music, great lesson thank you.
And thank YOU, Eric, for supporting us in all the ways that YOU do! 🙂

Always love what you’ve got, Eric. I think you’ve inspired me to try finger style again. I got frustrated years ago and put it aside.
You make such inspiring videos! These Days is one of my favorite songs.
The Mac song is bit challenging. travis picking picked up little quicker and loving it! really diggin this lesson. thank you Uncle Eric!
I've been hoping for this lesson for a while. I'm one of those people who won't even play a guitar if I don't have a pick. It's embarrassing. Man, you got me motivated to get back on my Travis picking goals. So awesome to be able to do that!
Thank you for sharing this excellent lesson! Clear and compelling - a great way to think about this style.
Saw the title. I have 18 minutes to kill. Looked at the length of this. 16:26. Ehh I’ll check it out. Then I saw, IT’S ERIC!!!!!
Hell yes I’ll check it out!
Thanks Eric
Beautiful lead at the end.
Sweet sounds. ❤️
Amazing timing on this video, I was just practicing Travis picking today! I’ve got my work cut out for me to nail down levels 2 and 3.
The methodical approach to on and off beats with thumb and fingers is the only way until your fingers go there before your brain tells them to. Takes a long time but is worth it. Luckily I had a teacher who made me master it. Did recording today on banjitar and octave mandolin, these old fingers still remember... Thanks for pointing this out.
these days, julia, rhiannon, all phenomenal songs. great choices
Thanks for the Travis tips! I tried retaking guitar theory a few years ago just to learn flamenco style after I moved on I realized that my flamenco style technique training has morphed into Travis picking and here I never heard the term.
Imma try this now . I loved that riannon song a lot that sounds dope
Another amazing lesson from eric. Always getting me excited to pick up my guitar
Beautifully done video. Inspiring.

love that you're doing more fingerpicking videos. Hope for lots more!
That third one is sooo hard, but but would be such payoff to play Rhiannon! The first two have become muscle memory over the years, so that third one will be an extra challenge.

That Bel Ray sounds stunning...
You’re the man Eric

Always a good hang. Thanks
Just what I needed today! Thank you as always!
Thanks Eric, great content.
GOOD TEACHER,THANK YOU
What a fantastic video Eric have you enjoyed playing guitar have a good weekend ❤❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊😊😊
Very cool lesson, merci.
Thank you
Hi Eric - I notice you use those Herco thumbpicks. I love them, but I wish Jim Dunlop didn't make them out of such a flimsy celluloid. If you know anyone there, would you suggest to them to produce a nylon or more durable celluloid version of them
Just checking in to say Haugen is a guitar deity
As usual great for all levels. Gives beginners something to work on or think about with basics they can use now.

It's in there! That's my buddy Daniel's prototype guitar - the "dogwood" danielfieldsguitar.com/
I just love the Starcaster! Also, I love this channel, you rock Eric
Outro jam!
In your description(sound tools) Sweetwater does not have that sweet deep wine red(I'm guessing) Starcaster. That's the one I want! You inspire not only my mindset on playing but your taste in guitars parallels mine.
Yeah those walnut ones are hard to find!
THank you

I’m actually putting together a hybrid picking thing for next week!
Thank you! This really helps a lot!!!
Inquiring minds want to know … did you buy the guitar to match the jacket or was it the other way around?
I need "Sound Tools" merch. Or maybe that's what Eric Haugen fan club members call ourselves.
🤓🤓🤓
I never gave it a chance for very long but press on nails feel weird as heck. Its enough to make you switch to harmonica.
Your lessons are fantastic, any chance of covering High Life? Nigerian or Ghanaian style guitar? It's something I've been trying to learn more about for a while.
I should do that! I know I won’t get it right but I can take a stab at it
I tired a Thumb pick and it just felt so foreign and unnatural. No feel. I'm gonna try again. Great lesson
It’s all about finding the right thumb pick! Most of them feel really tight or clunky
Such a cool dang guitar today hellllll yea man this aint the place for shreddy licks LOLL!! I bet you can throw down a pretty sick one!! every time im gettting out of control i just breathe a bit and slow everything down
Great lesson. Any disadvantage to hybrid picking these?
Naw! In fact next week I’m gonna talk about the utility of hybrid picking!
Can anyone pick which make of capo Eric is using here on the Julia demonstration?
Dust In The Wind by Kansas. I think it is a Classic Travis with a syncopated rhythm.
That’s a great example of the pinch Travis!
I can play this way, more or less, as long as the chord shapes remain static. It falls apart for me when the melody moves around on the upper strings while keeping the bass notes going -- think Elizabeth Cotten's "Freight Train".
Cool Stuff! thanks!
Do you use finger picks?
I’m trying to learn to Roger McGuinn’s technique. Flat pick with finger picks on 2 & 3.
Sometimes I use claws but inevitably I throw them off at some point. I do like that metal sound though!
Thought that in the beginning of learning/playing guitar that I never should have used anything but my fingers...
But because the path was ignored for the most part, my alternate picking arpeggios are better.🤣
At least that's what I tell myself 😊
Yeah...I should work on this 😉👍👍
😎✌👍❤🖖

That custom guitar really sings
Ps. Donovan used to claim he taught Lennon fingerpicking at some ashram when they were all at a meditation retreat
I believe that. They got pretty tight
Now do a heel hit for kick drum as you play a bass note, and a thumb slap for the snare as you play the melody...what level is that??!!🤯
...all those lovely tricks you learned throughout the years, but don't remember how! 🤷♂️
@@BCTGuitarPlayer That's my style, having learned from Kelly Valleau; once you have it, it's hard to *not* do it!
The "wrong way" of finger picking is a standard way of playing lute.
Level 5: Lindsey Buckingham
If nothing else Lindsey stood out. Quite an accomplishment in its own right. It only helped that he also wrote catchy stuff. I love him.
What do they call it when you just randomly throw your fingers at the strings and you’re adhd riddled brain is just trying to keep up? Love the lessons as always.
Tripping balls 😅
I think Jerry Reed called it “the claw”
@@josefk5659 I’ll go with that! Jerry was a beast of a player
C'mon, using your middle finger for the E string? My fingerpicking teacher would be angry. If you don't use 4 different fingers, what are you doing?
And HA! I fingerpick with no nails at all. Yes sir.
I love your playing but disagree. I could play come back baby and deep river blues as examples. Where is that category? Obviously I feel you have not spent a lot of time fingerpickun' oh great one

Agree with the man. Finger picking begins with Deep River Blues
Ok. I degress. And sorry to the whole damn community. I not a meanie. He is maybe the best I heard
I have to point out that Merle Travis used two fingers.
