'And the brick layers who are quite smart, END UP making the good money'. Never a truer word spoken. Over the last 10 years i have done a few self builds using good guys as i personally am not a builder and am at this moment in time building a forever home a house i would not change if i won the lottery. We have been using reclaimed stone which starts off looking like rubble. I retired in 2020 after 50 years on the tools. Indentured apprenticeship, nowadays they get a qualification for identifying each bond!!. I saw the Polish come over in droves, 4x4 wooden lintels, 20mm on the p*ss over 1200mm. 2ft of gobbo in the cavity.
I worked on the rooves for years, then went into carpenttry, wouldnt have changed a thing, winters were cold, but it went with the job,i have some fantastic memories.Started in 1976,in the hot summer.
I'm a retired bricklayer from Dublin Ireland. And God! I can relate to so much in this video. I particularly feel a great affinity to some of the guys whose comments bring it all home to me again. I'm in my seventies now, and when I was starting as an apprentice we were told things like: Dublin has the best bricklayres because of the tradition of Georgian architechture, after Dublin came London and so on. Of course this was all a myth. Now in Dublin there are quite a lot of eastern European bricklayers, who I'm sure would laugh at someone saying this. But I loved some of the comments about making and not making money and all of that. I know now there are very few Irish kids interested in bricklaying and construction, and it's not hard to see why this is now. Anyway, greetings brothers, as we used to say in the bricklayers union here in Dublin. The video brought back so much memories, some good and some not so good.
I'm in the aerospace game now work for Collins UTC and earn more than I did as a brickie tbf. I was a labourer then a bricky for 12 years I can tell u EXACTLY why there are hardly any brickies left.because unless it's summer or ur a nice private job...it is DOGSH!T. Site work nowadays is f@cking miserable. Quite simple
I like to lay a dry bond, it's saved me over the years. I knew bricklayers who would lay the bond, and I will never understand why. The few minutes you save costs you in qualitity of work but also costs time at the end of your bond. I've been doing this work a long time, and 4 out of 5 bricklayers are laying the bond instead of laying it dry.
@ should keep you going on you tube for a few years then 😂 As an aside. I’d say doyen in south west timber frames are slowly becoming the go to. They have caveats but watching traditional building, man it’s hard graft. Fair play. I don’t think I’d go back to traditional sites tbh. One offs no probs but think I’m done with them

Chang, your battery terminal is loose, this makes it get very hot and melt. It's not been forced. If the battery isn't that old see if you can tighten that damaged connection in the damaged slot with a knife blade and clean the gap in the slot with a bit of wet and dry sand paper. Love your show, I 'm picking up loads...👌👍👍
Coming at it from it from a different angle: I've been told quite a few times that I'm too well-spoken to be a bricklayer. Never challenged anyone to a race but I've given pause for thought to a fair few loudmouths on the line. Books and covers.
That cutter battery has had high resistance on the earth pin, the excess heat has melted the pin. Probably a bit furred up with corrosion which caused the bad earth.
For the life of me I don't know why the manufacturers of these battery platform tools don't also make a corded fake battery you can use interchangeably, to get you out of a bind if a battery goes dead on a job. I guess they don't want to, because they want to sell as many batteries as they can. Or perhaps the wattage(s) are different for each tool etc making it hard.
Not that easy, it would need to be a transformer to take 110 or 240 down to 36 or whatever. It could be done but it wouldn't just be a some cord to plug in
The battery has been shorting out! that's why the plastic is melted, normally a loose spring connector, normal trade use wear can do that. But check the connector spigot on the tool also, it may be worn thin? And will be blackened and damaged.
i just did it cos my dad did it and i needed a skill...and i knew how to do it as i used to go to work with him. at 17 i really didnt know what i wanted to do .tho its not my ideal job i dont hate it, like most people seem to do .. i like working with my hands and theres the job satisfaction element which is important...been doing it for 40 years now
Well said Changy.....you need to be a certain cut to be a top pro bricklayer.......you don't really choose to be a bricklayer.......bricklaying chooses you. The trowel then becomes a moneyprinter...brrrrrrŕrrŕrrrrr. Keep burning line😂
Australian here. We have a housing crisis that would put yours to shame...no houses getting built and they're bringing in hundreds of thousands of mirants a year- none of whom have any interest in working construction, especially not becoming bricklayers! Mostly Indians and Bangladeshis who culturally think that type of work is for untouchables. Can you blame them? They love to bang on about a free market, but where is the appropriate market rate for what bricklayers put themselves through? There is absolutely no way in the world they get paid enough to do what they do
Brickies in Perth are getting very good rates at the moment to be honest. And as a 65 year old carpenter Im happy with my wages as well so dont intend retiring yet.
@stevecowan6457 they're getting very good rates *now*. But it was only 5 or 6 years ago, all the brickies were leaving the trade in droves and entering other things. Friends were owed $50k each by nicheliving...they just flat out refused to pay. No reason just...if you can't afford to fight it, they get away with $50k saved off the build. Now they're screaming out for brickies and they've already left. It's okay to say they're on okay rates now but the complete picture is much more complex
Men sacrifice themselves for greater good most physical trades end up with lots of problems in retirement if you make it that is we plenty of youngsters now question this and rightly so but we are men and just get in with would be nice if they would lower the pension to 60 may encourage more youngsters.

For sure now joinery has been shafted. all trades earn very similar but im expected to be able to lay bricks, fit plug sockets and paint a wall, basically know it all and get over anything , meanwhile others come to me to cut a bit of cls and have no tools.
70 year old now, riddled with arthrisus, spent many years digging holes in the water industry, and cable laying game, would have loved to have met someone like you when i was a kid,and got the good advice you give, like you said ,i could never have worked inside,in the summer being outside was brilliant, even in winter,we had to work in the rain, but you got on with it,you deserve to go far my friend, god bless.

Oldschoold British brickies are very good tradesmen, learned a lot with them once I got understand what they were saying l😂

It's crazy hard manual workers building houses for laptop workers to live in comfort watching the workers out the window while the traders graft.
backwards land we live in
there's nothing "comfortable" about office work. you have to deal with women and minorities, do their job on top of your own, fix their mistakes and be paid less. yes, manual work is hard but people doing those jobs are not very smart or skilled.
Everyone makes their own choices. If you want to be a "laptop worker" then study for it.

One of my favourite things in the entire world, is an elaborately decorative brick building. I appreciate great brickwork and the skill, discipline and patience required to brick up a high quality building.
'And the brick layers who are quite smart, END UP making the good money'. Never a truer word spoken. I have been in a trade involving vehicles which i have loved for 30 years and it has served me very well. Over the last 10 years i have done a few self builds using good guys as i personally am not a builder and am at this moment in time building a forever home a house i would not change if i won the lottery. We have been using reclaimed stone which starts off looking like rubble. Back it off (on my Norton clipper Jumbo 900), clean off all the signs of old pointing, wash it and WOW the stuff i have built is top draw. TALK ABOUT JOB SATISFACTION LOOKING AT A PROPER BUILDING YOU HAVE PRODUCED FROM SCRATCH. Young lads listen up, put the time in and you won't be disappointed.
how about you go back to 2008-2013 and see how you like your construction business during that period. stop lying. kids are not stupid.

Great tallent could be sadly one which could be dying. due to kids wanting to get rich tomorrow.
A smart brickie isn't going to be a brickie for very long.
@@therealbaylee H'mmm ? The idea is that the smart Brickie learns the job properly and has pride and passion always saving for when his time comes to buy a plot. Then he builds one for himself and lives in that house, then sells the house , pays off all his debt and buys 2 x plots and from then on it just rolls into a business of endless possibility's. There are always lads who just want to party, shag, sniff and drink. Think more about going down the gym, having a fake tan, tattoo's, a nice haircut, poss beard and Turkey teeth. The later hit 45 and think WTF, where am i.

I like to lay a dry bond, it's saved me over the years. I knew bricklayers who would lay the bond, and I will never understand why. The few minutes you save costs you in qualitity of work but also costs time at the end of your bond. I've been doing this work a long time, and 4 out of 5 bricklayers are laying the bond instead of laying it dry.
god bless u hard working men

Coming at it from it from a different angle: I've been told quite a few times that I'm too well-spoken to be a bricklayer. Never challenged anyone to a race but I've given pause for thought to a fair few loudmouths on the line. Books and covers.
Translation: "I'm intimidated by your eloquence. Get the f away from me so it doesn't rub off."
The amount off people I still see wrapping line on both pins 😅 they won’t be told lol good luck with the weather lads hope your earning 💪
🤝🏼🤠 keep em coming changy even though i hate site work i like watching ya videos
Anthor good video and top work mate 🧱👊👊👊👊
On the battery. If it doesn't fit, force it, if it breaks it needed to be replaced anyway,
I know working with apprentices is a necessity but God damn I struggle with em.
I did city and guilds, but those qualifications are not accepted, they also had a tendency to use foreign labour.
Bricklaying is a art ,and working outside in the summer is nice ,not much fun in the winter months,
