In compiling the text of St. Paul, the composer, who was well grounded in bible knowledge, and Julius Schubring confined themselves almost exclusively to the words of holy writ. Stephen, the first Christian martyr, who proclaims the new teaching to believers and unbelievers alike, is stoned to death by a furious crowd. Saul of Tarsus, a passionate defender of the traditions of his forebears, persecutes the Christian communities without mercy. But then, as is reported three times in the Acts of the Apostles, he has a vision of the risen Christ. He is deeply moved, and afflicted with blindness for three days; after this experience on the road to Damascus he takes the name of Paul and becomes one of Christ's apostles.

A friend of mine who sang in the Tanglewood Festival Chorus with the Boston Symphony told me that the chorus members LOVED Mr. de Burgos when he guest conducted. He was their favorite guest conductor.
I had the privilege of singing the "St. Paul" twice in the 1970's-80s with the Boston Boys and Men's Chorus, under the late legendary Dr. Theodore Marier. I was enthralled with this work from the very first rehearsal. Regrettably, there are conductors I've known that claim that the "St. Paul" is youthful work of Mendelssohn's, and pales in comparison to "Elijah." "Elijah" is a "barn-burner" to be sure, but I think the "St. Paul" doesn't have to take a back seat to "Elijah." Unfortunately, it's not done often as it requires a large orchestra and chorus, and "Elijah" overshadows it. But this recording alone justifies this work to be done more often. It's wonderful to read so many compliments about this "hidden treasure" by Mendelssohn!! Some had never known its existence until they heard this recording!

@@Liebes2732 I was not mocking his religion. Mendelssohn was a Christian not is a Christian. What I was pointing out that Mendelssohn's talent was the result of his hard work not just because of a deity. You are insulting Mendelssohn by simply saying his efforts were God-given.

@@LNSCAdmin If Meldelssohn were alive, he would disagree with you. We Christians attribute all our work, talent, gift or success to the immeasurable Grace of God, and we do everything for His Glory. This work of his own was probably written with the aim of preaching the word of God, as the lyrics were written in partnership with a pastor and childhood friend of Mendelssohn, and tell the story of one of the most important apostles for the Christian faith.

I have a great deal of affection for Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos. He came to Toronto several years ago, and signed LPs and let me and a friend come back and visit him after the performance. Mind you, my friend said he was from the LSO, which he wasn't and security let us in! : D The maestro was overly gracious to us and a real honour to meet.

My personal opinión for this character, he has fulled up the Christian doctrine with Platonism, which is understood as a false interpretación on what The Kingdom of Heaven means. And yet during so many centurias. The first posición in the score on What Heaven means nearly comes from Jehová Witnessis, a false religión, calcule I, in their 85 %, but they were the first ones, so we have to stand them. They say that the platonism comes from St. Agustín ( VI Century), which with reading of the Letters I consider false. ❤

Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau did very well in one of his few bass roles here. The Paulus is also the IMHO best oratorio written since Bach's Matthäuspassion. However...
..one question lingers while checking this recording out. Why is there a butt-naked individual at St. Paul's lecture in that painting?

This is such interesting music! I keep thinking I'm hearing echos of Gluck. So many of the sequences sound like something out of Iphigenia in Aulis. In fact, if you had played this to me without identifying it and asked me to guess the composer, I'd have said Gluck without hesitation, and been willing to bet substantial money on being right. Are there any other Gluck-freaks reading who agree or disagree with me?

O ORATÓRIO PAULUS E O ORATÓRIO ELIAS DE MENDELSSOHN, REPRESENTAM O PONTO MAIS ALTO DA MÚSICA SACRA DO SÉCULO XIX. SÃO DUAS ENTRE AS DEMAIS OBRAS SACRAS DE TODOS OS TEMPOS, VERDADEIRAS OBRAS PRIMAS NO REPERTÓRIO SACRO ATÉ HOJE. SÃO ESMAGADORAMENTE MELHORES DO QUE O LAMENTÁVEL ORATÓRIO CRISTO NO MONTE DAS OLIVEIRAS, DE BEETHOVEN.
