Even some early Avar sabers apparently were used both two-handed and one-handed. If you consider this and those early examples a saber then I would say the tachi and katana are sabers in their own right. I mean as far as we can tell both were used one-handed on horseback anyway. They might be a bit heavy but some tachi have small enough hilts to enable easy one-handed use and sometimes you want something a bit heavier and longer when you are on horseback. Then if you fight on foot you can switch to two hands if you need more leverage or nimbleness in the hand. I recommend checking out Russ Mitchell's lecture on sabers before the Napoleonic period if anyone reading this is curious to learn a bit more.

  • @FiliiMartis

Call it a long-sabre, from symmetry with the longsword term. If one wants, call it a schiavonesca long-sabre to qualify its Dalmatian/Venetian style aesthetic. Or a Hungarian long-sabre if that's its provenance (or if one wants to emphasise the yelman on the blade).
As an added comment: it was sold for £2,200. If you take into account the 35% or so extra fees (people can check the exact numbers for themselves) it still gives a relatively affordable price for a quite rare piece. It lacks a grip and people cannot just swing it around, but makers of swords can buy this or similar pieces and offer reproductions. So there's no excuse for sword makers not to use real pieces as a basis for their reproductions, and move away from offering steel clubs as swords (there are a few makers like this; they know who they are).
P.S. And I say a big NO on the katana comparison as well.

The cuirassier helmets of second german Empire , compare them to mid/ late 17th century european helmets. Two handed, relatively light, single edged, usable point. Not a stereotypical Chinese saber. Not a standard jian. A very interesting and versatile weapon.

A left handed saber longsword, no less. I am pretty sure that that is the first authentic antique s-guard I have seen curving backwards. Of the hundreds of s-guards I have seen, all, or almost all have the front quillion curving to the inside line when held in the right hand, with the rear quillion curving to the outside line. Of course, there are those great Scandinavian longswords where both quillons curve to the outside line.

With the direction in which the quillons are curved, I think it’s possible it was actually made for someone who was left-handed. Most S-shaped guards that I’ve seen curve toward the inside line on the true edge’s side to protect the fingers, and toward the outside on the false side to protect the wrist. That’s what it looks like to me at least.

I'm speculating, but I would assume it might be because longswords were generally used both in unarmed duels and as side arms in battle where you would likely face opponents in plate armour. In unarmed duelling there wouldn't be much of a difference, but for armoured fighting the straight blade of the longsword lets you do techniques like half swording and mordhau which would be much harder to do on a curved blade without cutting yourself

    • @bretthess6376
      @bretthess6376 28 дней назад

      Probably not.
Most tangs are already forged down about as far as they'll go.
And the process of heating a thin tang to welding heat will cause it to lose more material, and will de- temper the blade.
Theoretically, the blade could be tempered again, but being fully sharp already, it might crack along the edge.
Basically it would be just as easy to just make another one.

Swords with that kind of handle are known as "schiavonesca". The ancestor of the schiavona.

Yes, I tried to avoid that term because I think it is a modern/19th century museum term and not really correct to the period (like sidesword).

@@scholagladiatoria It is In fact, most probably the earliest known name for this type of sword, attested in the will of sword-smith Dobrič Bunisalić from Republic of Ragusa written in 1391, which mentions two such swords: "De le doe spade schiavonesche".
This further complicates the origin place of these swords, or actually makes it clearer, because Schiavonia / Sclavonia in Dubrovnik (Republic of Ragusa), unlike in Venice, referred to Serbia exclusively.
In Latin documents originating in Municipality / Republic of Ragusa from late 13th century onward, Serbian monarchs are regularly titled “Rex Sclavoniae”, “Imperator Sclavoniae”, “Conte Sclavoniae”, “Comitissa Sclauoniae”, “Despot Sclavoniae”. In various legal documents dealing with activities of the Republic or its citizens who resided in Serbia as merchants, craftsmen, miners, etc, the country is often referred to as “Sclauonia”.
If we consider that this first historic mention of the sword is coming from a sword-smith from Dubrovnik, he in fact possessed two "Serbian swords". This is even further confirmed by the fact that people of the Republic also denoted the items which came from Bosnia, or were made in “Bosnian fashion”, for instance “unum scutum bosinensem” mentioned in 1335.
"Spada schiavonescha" and "scutum bosinensem" are therefore two Ragusan terms denoting the items which came from Serbia and Bosnia, or were made in their local fashion.
